During an ecological study of the epibiotic relationship between ciliate protists and Pomacea figulina (Spix, 1827) (Gastropoda, Ampullariidae), originating from an urban stream in southeast Brazil, ...a high infestation by the peritrich ciliate Carchesium polypinum (Linnaeus, 1758) Ehrenberg, 1830 (Ciliophora, Peritrichia) associated to the shell of one mollusc among 23 was observed. We provided a morphological and morphometric study of C. polypinum using observations of specimens in vivo, after protargol staining, and examined using scanning electron microscopy. The Brazilian-population of C. polypinum is characterized by: size of zooid in vivo 89 µm x 57 µm on average; colony regularly dichotomously branched with usually up to 40 zooids; macronucleus usually J-shaped; single contractile vacuole located in the upper third of body; myoneme not continuous throughout the colony; stalks contract despite the discontinuity of their individual myonemes; polykinety comprises three peniculi, each consisting of three kineties. The high infestation showed here could be related to the preference for eutrophic environments showed by C. polypinum and suggested that ciliate epibionts may be ecologically important in aquatic habitats.
Site preference and spatial and temporal occurrence of the peritrich ciliate Rhabdostyla sp. colonizing oligochaetes of the species Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri were investigated along a polluted stream ...in Brazil. Three patterns of site preference of the ciliates on the oligochaetes were observed, with the location of Rhabdostyla sp. predominantly on the posterior region of L. hoffmeisteri. The occurrence of the epibionts on the oligochaetes was spatially and temporally heterogeneous. The results are discussed in terms of the possible causes of the ciliates' preference for the posterior region of the tubificids, and the factors related to the heterogeneous spatial and temporal patterns.
Le designer de produits est un acteur incontournable de l’opérationnalisation du développement durable (Ahmad et al., 2018a). De par son activité de conception et de fabrication, il a dorénavant une ...responsabilité éthique de mettre sur le marché des produits à moindre impact environnemental, social et éthique. Néanmoins, les approches dont il dispose actuellement pour concevoir des produits à moindre impact sur l’environnement présentent certaines limites et ne permettent pas de répondre, de manière globale et systémique, aux enjeux du développement durable (Van Den Abeele, 2011; Cucuzzella, 2011). L’écoconception, la principale approche enseignée et utilisée en design de produits, qui vise la diminution des impacts environnementaux des produits tout au long de leur cycle de vie, propose des solutions fonctionnant généralement sur le court et moyen termes (Cucuzzella, 2011), en tenant moins compte des enjeux sociaux, éthiques et économiques, pourtant intrinsèques au développement durable. Le biomimétisme, qui s’inspire de la nature pour résoudre des problèmes humains (Benyus, 2019), représente une démarche pertinente à explorer afin d’aider le designer de produits à répondre de façon plus systémique aux enjeux du développement durable. Dans ce contexte, cette étude a pour objectif principal d’analyser le potentiel d’intégration du biomimétisme dans le processus de développement d’un produit. La recherche descriptive qualitative fut le devis de recherche utilisé dans cette étude pour répondre à l’objectif de l’étude. Dans un premier temps, trois entrevues semi-dirigées menées auprès d’experts réputés en biomimétisme, une en France, une au Brésil et une au Canada ont été réalisées afin de comprendre leur vision de l’utilisation du biomimétisme et les limites qu’ils perçoivent. Dans un deuxième temps, une analyse critique des termes biomimétisme, biomimétique, bionique et conception bioinspirée, principaux termes utilisés dans la littérature pour qualifier une démarche d’inspiration de la nature, a été réalisée afin de proposer des pistes de recommandations menant à une nouvelle définition plus complète et complexe du biomimétisme. Dans un troisième temps, à partir des données issues des entrevues combinées à une brève analyse des principales méthodes en biomimétisme dans la conception de produits, des pistes menant à l’identification d’étapes exploratoires pour une nouvelle démarche méthodologique conceptuelle baptisée Bio-ADN sont présentées.
The product designer is a key player in the operationalization of sustainable development (Ahmad et al., 2018a). Through its design and manufacturing activities, it now has an ethical responsibility to put on the market products with a lower environmental, social and ethical impact. Nevertheless, the approaches currently available to it to create products with a lower environmental impact have certain limitations and it doesn't allow it to respond, in a global and systemic way, to the challenges of sustainable development (Van Den Abeele, 2011; Cucuzzella, 2011). Ecodesign, the main approach taught and used in product design, which aims to reduce the environmental impacts of products throughout their life cycle offers solutions that generally work in the short and medium-term (Cucuzzella, 2011), taking less account of social, ethical and economic issues, which are intrinsic to sustainable development. Biomimicry, which draws its inspiration from nature to solve human problems (Benyus, 2019), represents a relevant approach to be explored in order to help product designers respond more systemically to the challenges of sustainable development. In this context, the main objective of this study is to analyze the potential of integrating biomimicry in the product design process. A qualitative descriptive research design was used in this study to meet the objective of the study. Initially, three semi-directed interviews with renowned experts in biomimicry, one in France, one in Brazil and one in Canada were conducted in order to understand their vision of the use of biomimicry and the limits they perceive. In a second step, a critical analysis of the terms biomimicry, biomimetics, bionics and bio-inspired design, the main terms used in the literature to qualify an approach inspired by nature was carried out in order to propose recommendations leading to a new, more complete and complex definition of biomimicry. In a third step, based on the data from the interviews combined with a brief analysis of the main biomimicry methods used in product design, several avenues leading to the identification of exploratory steps for a new conceptual methodological approach called Bio-DNA are presented.
