Chemosensory-related gene (CRG) families have been studied extensively in insects, but their evolutionary history across the Arthropoda had remained relatively unexplored. Here, we address current ...hypotheses and prior conclusions on CRG family evolution using a more comprehensive data set. In particular, odorant receptors were hypothesized to have proliferated during terrestrial colonization by insects (hexapods), but their association with other pancrustacean clades and with independent terrestrial colonizations in other arthropod subphyla have been unclear. We also examine hypotheses on which arthropod CRG family is most ancient. Thus, we reconstructed phylogenies of CRGs, including those from new arthropod genomes and transcriptomes, and mapped CRG gains and losses across arthropod lineages. Our analysis was strengthened by including crustaceans, especially copepods, which reside outside the hexapod/branchiopod clade within the subphylum Pancrustacea. We generated the first high-resolution genome sequence of the copepod Eurytemora affinis and annotated its CRGs. We found odorant receptors and odorant binding proteins present only in hexapods (insects) and absent from all other arthropod lineages, indicating that they are not universal adaptations to land. Gustatory receptors likely represent the oldest chemosensory receptors among CRGs, dating back to the Placozoa. We also clarified and confirmed the evolutionary history of antennal ionotropic receptors across the Arthropoda. All antennal ionotropic receptors in E. affinis were expressed more highly in males than in females, suggestive of an association with male mate-recognition behavior. This study is the most comprehensive comparative analysis to date of CRG family evolution across the largest and most speciose metazoan phylum Arthropoda.

Context
Several therapies have been tested for combating weight gain and obesity-related metabolic diseases, and among these therapies, intermittent fasting (IF) has gained a great deal of ...interest.
Objective
The aim of this study was to provide the reader with a current survey of IF protocols and an understanding of the outcomes found to date in terms of the profile of the intestinal microbiota (IM) in obese organisms.
Data Sources
Data were obtained from 4 databases: PubMed, SCOPUS, LILACs, and Web of Science.
Data Extraction
Data from studies relating IF protocols to the microbiota and weight loss were extracted using a protocol in START program.
Data Analysis
Of the 82 original articles identified from the databases, 35 were eliminated due to duplication, and 32 were excluded due to not meeting the inclusion criteria. Two additional articles found in a new search were added, yielding a total of 17 studies to be included in this review. Among the protocols, alternate-day fasting (ADF) and time-restricted feeding (TRF) were the most common, and they were shown to have different mechanisms of metabolic signaling. TRF influences weight control and biochemical parameters by regulating the circadian system, and improving satiety control systems by acting on leptin secretion. On the other hand, ADF leads to a reduction of ±75% of all energy consumption regardless of dietary composition in addition to promoting hormonal adjustments that promote weight control. Furthermore, both protocols showed the ability to remodel the IM by changing the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio and increasing the abundance of strains such as Lactobacillus spp. and Akkermansia m. that have a protective effect on metabolism against the effects of weight gain.
Conclusion
In short, the ADF and TRF protocols have a positive effect on the remodeling of the IM and can possibly be used to control body adiposity, improve insulin sensitivity, and achieve other obesity-related metabolic changes.

This review is based on 65 references and describes in a critical and interpretative ways the advantages of the NMR spectroscopy as a main technique to be used in crude oil refining industries that want to characterize crude oil fractions and the obtained refined products.

The state of the art in the characterization of heavy crude oil mixtures is presented. This characterization can be done by different techniques, such as gas chromatography (GC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), thin layer chromatography (TLC), infrared spectroscopy (IR), Raman spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry (MS). Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is the technique of choice due to its capability to provide information on the chemical nature of individual types of hydrogen and carbon atoms in different and complex mixtures of crude oils. The progress made in the interpretation of the NMR spectra with the development of new NMR techniques and different multivariate data analyses could give relevant information about the identification and characterization of hydrocarbons and their physical and chemical properties. These progresses can improve the refining industries operation as a result of the better knowledge on the crude composition that is fed in the refining process, as well as in the prediction of better operating conditions to obtain refined products with desired specifications and in quantities desirable to meet the market demands. The improvement in the refining operation conditions is reflected in economical benefits.
While infectious agents have typical host preferences, the noninvasive enteric bacterium Vibrio cholerae is remarkable for its ability to survive in many environments, yet cause diarrheal disease ...(cholera) only in humans. One key V. cholerae virulence factor is its neuraminidase (VcN), which releases host intestinal epithelial sialic acids as a nutrition source and simultaneously remodels intestinal polysialylated gangliosides into monosialoganglioside GM1. GM1 is the optimal binding target for the B subunit of a second virulence factor, the AB5 cholera toxin (Ctx). This coordinated process delivers the CtxA subunit into host epithelia, triggering fluid loss via cAMP-mediated activation of anion secretion and inhibition of electroneutral NaCl absorption. We hypothesized that human-specific and human-universal evolutionary loss of the sialic acid N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc) and the consequent excess of N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) contributes to specificity at one or more steps in pathogenesis. Indeed, VcN was less efficient in releasing Neu5Gc than Neu5Ac. We show enhanced binding of Ctx to sections of small intestine and isolated polysialogangliosides from human-like Neu5Gc-deficient Cmah-/- mice compared to wild-type, suggesting that Neu5Gc impeded generation of the GM1 target. Human epithelial cells artificially expressing Neu5Gc were also less susceptible to Ctx binding and CtxA intoxication following VcN treatment. Finally, we found increased fluid secretion into loops of Cmah-/- mouse small intestine injected with Ctx, indicating an additional direct effect on ion transport. Thus, V. cholerae evolved into a human-specific pathogen partly by adapting to the human evolutionary loss of Neu5Gc, optimizing multiple steps in cholera pathogenesis.
During the Late Pleistocene, major parts of North America were periodically covered by ice sheets. However, there are still questions about whether ice‐free refugia were present in the Alexander ...Archipelago along the Southeast (SE) Alaska coast during the last glacial maximum (LGM). Numerous subfossils have been recovered from caves in SE Alaska, including American black (Ursus americanus) and brown (U. arctos) bears, which today are found in the Alexander Archipelago but are genetically distinct from mainland bear populations. Hence, these bear species offer an ideal system to investigate long‐term occupation, potential refugial survival and lineage turnover. Here, we present genetic analyses based on 99 new complete mitochondrial genomes from ancient and modern brown and black bears spanning the last ~45,000 years. Black bears form two SE Alaskan subclades, one preglacial and another postglacial, that diverged >100,000 years ago. All postglacial ancient brown bears are closely related to modern brown bears in the archipelago, while a single preglacial brown bear is found in a distantly related clade. A hiatus in the bear subfossil record around the LGM and the deep split of their pre‐ and postglacial subclades fail to support a hypothesis of continuous occupancy in SE Alaska throughout the LGM for either species. Our results are consistent with an absence of refugia along the SE Alaska coast, but indicate that vegetation quickly expanded after deglaciation, allowing bears to recolonize the area after a short‐lived LGM peak.
The identification of high-performance indicator taxa that combine practical feasibility and ecological value requires an understanding of the costs and benefits of surveying different taxa. We ...present a generic and novel framework for identifying such taxa, and illustrate our approach using a large-scale assessment of 14 different higher taxa across three forest types in the Brazilian Amazon, estimating both the standardized survey cost and the ecological and biodiversity indicator value for each taxon. Survey costs varied by three orders of magnitude, and dung beetles and birds were identified as especially suitable for evaluating and monitoring the ecological consequences of habitat change in our study region. However, an exclusive focus on such taxa occurs at the expense of understanding patterns of diversity in other groups. To improve the cost-effectiveness of biodiversity research we encourage a combination of clearer research goals and the use of an objective evidence-based approach to selecting study taxa.
An increase in celiac consumers has caused an increasing interest to develop good quality gluten‐free food products with high nutritional value. Snack foods are consumed worldwide and have become a ...normal part of the eating habits of the celiac population making them a target to improve their nutritive value. Extrusion and deep‐frying of unripe plantain, chickpea, and maize flours blends produced gluten‐free snacks with high dietary fiber contents (13.7–18.2 g/100 g) and low predicted glycemic index (28 to 35). The gluten‐free snacks presented lower fat content (12.7 to 13.6 g/100 g) than those reported in similar commercial snacks. The snack with the highest unripe plantain flour showed higher slowly digestible starch (11.6 and 13.4 g/100 g) than its counterpart with the highest chickpea flour level (6 g/100 g). The overall acceptability of the gluten‐free snacks was similar to that chili‐flavored commercial snack. It was possible to develop gluten‐free snacks with high dietary fiber content and low predicted glycemic index with the blend of the 3 flours, and these gluten‐free snacks may also be useful as an alternative to reduce excess weight and obesity problems in the general population and celiac community.
Practical Application
One of the most important areas of the food industry is the development of new products. There is a growing interest in functional foods, and even more for those products with high dietary fiber content because of the excess weight and obesity problems. The under‐utilization of some food crops such as unripe banana and chickpea can be an alternative ingredient in the development food products widely consumed as snacks. The results of the present study show that a snack with acceptable sensory features by the consumers, with high dietary fiber content and low predicted glycemic index may be produced. This snack product is an alternative for the population because of the increase in the health problems related with the excess weight and obesity.
Abstract Microglia constitute the brain's immunocompetent cells and are intricately implicated in numerous inflammatory processes included in neonatal brain injury. In addition, clearance of tissue ...debris by microglia is essential for tissue homeostasis and may have a neuroprotective outcome. Since unconjugated bilirubin (UCB) has been proven to induce astroglial immunological activation and neuronal cell death, we addressed the question of whether microglia acquires a reactive phenotype when challenged by UCB and intended to characterize this response. In the present study we report that microglia primary cultures stimulated by UCB react by the acquisition of a phagocytic phenotype that shifted into an inflammatory response characterized by the secretion of the pro-inflammatory cytokines tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, and IL-6, upregulation of cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 and increased matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and -9 activities. Further investigation upon upstream signalling pathways revealed that UCB led to the activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and nuclear factor (NF)-κB at an early time point, suggesting that these pathways might underlie both the phagocytic and the inflammatory phenotypes engaged by microglia. Curiously, the phagocytic and inflammatory phenotypes in UCB-activated microglia seem to alternate along time, indicating that microglia reacts towards UCB insult firstly with a phagocytic response, in an attempt to constrain the lesion extent and comprising a neuroprotective measure. Upon prolonged UCB exposure periods, either a shift on global microglia reaction occurred or there could be two distinct sub-populations of microglial cells, one directed at eliminating the damaged cells by phagocytosis, and another that engaged a more delayed inflammatory response. In conclusion, microglial cells are relevant partners to consider during bilirubin encephalopathy and the modulation of its activation might be a promising therapeutic target.
Neuronal oxidative damage and cell death by unconjugated bilirubin (UCB) showed to be mediated by overstimulation of glutamate receptors and nitric oxide (NO) production, which was abrogated by the ...bile acid glycoursodeoxycholic acid (GUDCA). Microglia, a crucial mediator of CNS inflammation, evidenced to react to UCB by releasing glutamate and NO before becoming senescent. Our studies demonstrated that neurite outgrowth deficits are produced in neurons exposed to UCB and that conditioned media from these UCB-treated neurons further stimulate NO production by microglia. Nevertheless, microglia protective and/or harmful effects in neonatal jaundice are poorly understood, or unrecognized. Here, we investigated the role of microglia, glutamate and NO in the impairment of neurite sprouting by UCB. Therapeutic potential of the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-10 and GUDCA was also evaluated. By using MK-801 (a NMDA glutamate-subtype receptor antagonist) and l-NAME (a non-specific NO synthase inhibitor) we found that glutamate and NO are determinants in the early and enduring deficits in neurite extension and ramification induced by UCB. Both GUDCA and IL-10 prevented these effects and decreased the production of glutamate and NO. Only GUDCA was able to counteract neuronal death and synaptic changes. Data from organotypic-cultured hippocampal slices, depleted or non-depleted in microglia, supported that microglia participate in glutamate homeostasis and contribute to NO production and cell demise, which were again abrogated by GUDCA. Collectively our data suggest that microglia is a key player in UCB-induced neurotoxicity and that GUDCA might be a valuable preventive therapy in neonates at risk of UCB encephalopathy.
