The question from the title may at first seem somewhat unusual or even exaggerated, but we can rightfully ask it to the Croatian public, and sometimes each of us can ask ourselves the same question. ...And that in the sense of the preferred version of the Croatian language in public use, which is the literary language (standard). We will all find ourselves many times in a situation where we need to speak or write in the literary Croatian language, regardless of our level of education or profession, primarily because this is the only language in which all of us in Croatia can fully communicate.
The article draws attention to the terminological confusion caused by the unjustified co-existence of four adjective derivatives: kurikulumski, kurikularni, kurikulni i kurikulski. The author ...explains why the maladjusted foreign words such as kurikulum, kurikulumski i kurikularni have no place in the standard Croatian language, and why the adjective kurikulni is normatively more acceptable in standard Croatian language and therefore takes precedence over the adjective kurikulski.
The paper discusses ambiguities relating to the name of the Croatian translator of the Holy Script (published from 1858 to 1861), Ivan Matija Škarić: was his name Matija or Matij; was his family name ...Škarić or Skarić? There are also ambiguities relating to the name of the language into which Škarić translated the Holy Script – was it Dalmatian-Illyrian or Illyrian? – and to the role of Karadžić’s translation of the New Testament in Škarić’s translation.
On the example of three almost concurrent professional pedagogical terms: curriculum, kurikulum i kurikul, the paper problematizes the overall, uncontrolled penetration of foreign words into the ...contemporary lexicon of the Croatian language. In stead of these foreign words, we should use the Croatian expression uputnik and its adjective form uputnički.
Greetings are one of the oldest forms of human communication. They can be verbal, verbal/non-verbal and non-verbal communication acts. Greetings are used in direct communication dialogues. This ...communication usually consists of two components: invocation as a greeting and revocation as a farewell. Together they are commonly referred to as greetings. First and foremost, greetings belong to the category of linguistics and communication. However, they are social and ideological acts, too, thus the acquisition of their accurate and appropriate use is required with respect to communication partners and situation specificity. At different levels of education, higher education institutions included, and particularly those responsible for training of future pre-school and primary teachers, the mission includes promotion of linguistic appropriateness and, subsequently, linguistic politeness. Hence, greeting and farewell as pragmemes of language etiquette are amatter of theoretical and practical interest in the study of linguistic appropriateness.
Central scientific interest of Ljudevit Jonke is dedicated to the standard language of the 19th century, the standardization of which was also influenced by the school grammars of Mirko Divković – a ...grammarian from the period in which the standard was at its breaking point. The author of this paper focuses her interest on Jonke’s review and his assessment of Divković’s role in the literary and linguistic turmoil at the turn from the 19th into the 20th century.
