To explore the neuroanatomic basis of amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) in patients with Parkinson disease (PD; aMCI-PD(+)) and without PD (aMCI-PD(-)).
A total of 119 patients with aMCI ...(aMCI-PD(-), n = 78, and aMCI-PD(+), n = 41) underwent T1-weighted MRI, and the image data were analyzed using voxel-based morphometry.
No significant differences in demographic characteristics or general cognition were found between patients with aMCI-PD(-) and aMCI-PD(+). Comparisons of neuropsychological tests between groups revealed that patients with aMCI-PD(-) had lower scores in delayed verbal and visual recognition memory, whereas visuospatial dysfunction was more severe in patients with aMCI-PD(+). Gray matter (GM) density in the right temporal and posterior cingular cortices was significantly lower in the aMCI-PD(-) group compared with controls. In contrast, GM density in the aMCI-PD(+) group was significantly lower in the precuneus and left prefrontal and primary motor areas relative to controls. A direct comparison between groups showed that decreased GM density in aMCI-PD(-) relative to aMCI-PD(+) was localized in the right temporal and anterior prefrontal areas, whereas decreased GM density in aMCI-PD(+) relative to aMCI-PD(-) was involved in the bilateral precuneus, left primary motor, and right parietal areas. Memory decline was correlated with temporal area atrophy in aMCI-PD(-) and with posterior cingulate cortex atrophy in aMCI-PD(+).
Our data suggest that different neuroanatomic systems underlie memory dysfunction in patients with aMCI-PD(-) and aMCI-PD(+).
Dentin in permanent teeth rarely undergoes resorption in development, homeostasis, or aging, in contrast to bone that undergoes periodic resorption/remodeling. The authors hypothesized that cells in ...the mesenchymal compartment of dental pulp attenuate osteoclastogenesis. Mononucleated and adherent cells from donor-matched rat dental pulp (dental pulp cells DPCs) and alveolar bone (alveolar bone cells ABCs) were isolated and separately cocultured with primary rat splenocytes. Primary splenocytes readily aggregated and formed osteoclast-like cells in chemically defined osteoclastogenesis medium with 20 ng/mL of macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) and 50 ng/mL of receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand (RANKL). Strikingly, DPCs attenuated osteoclastogenesis when cocultured with primary splenocytes, whereas ABCs slightly but significantly promoted osteoclastogenesis. DPCs yielded ~20-fold lower RANKL expression but >2-fold higher osteoprotegerin (OPG) expression than donor-matched ABCs, yielding a RANKL/OPG ratio of 41:1 (ABCs:DPCs). Vitamin D3 significantly promoted RANKL expression in ABCs and OPG in DPCs. In vivo, rat maxillary incisors were atraumatically extracted (without any tooth fractures), followed by retrograde pulpectomy to remove DPCs and immediate replantation into the extraction sockets to allow repopulation of the surgically treated root canal with periodontal and alveolar bone–derived cells. After 8 wk, multiple dentin/root resorption lacunae were present in root dentin with robust RANKL and OPG expression. There were areas of dentin resoprtion alternating with areas of osteodentin formation in root dentin surface in the observed 8 wk. These findings suggest that DPCs of the mesenchymal compartment have an innate ability to attenuate osteoclastogenesis and that this innate ability may be responsible for the absence of dentin resorption in homeostasis. Mesenchymal attenuation of dentin resorption may have implications in internal resorption in the root canal, pulp/dentin regeneration, and root resorption in orthodontic tooth movement.
Evidence suggests the importance of skin biophysical properties in predicting diseases and in developing appropriate skin care. The results to date of studies on skin surface pH, stratum corneum (SC) ...hydration and sebum content in both genders and at various ages have been inconclusive, which was in part due to small sample size. Additionally, little is known about the skin physical properties of Asian, especially Chinese, subjects. In the present study, we assess the difference in skin surface pH, sebum content and SC hydration at various ages and in both genders in a large Chinese population without skin diseases.
713 subjects (328 males and 385 females) aged 0.5-94 years were enrolled in this study. The subjects were divided by age into 5 groups, i.e., 0-12, 13-35, 36-50, 51-70 and over 70 years old. A multifunctional skin physiology monitor was used to measure SC hydration, skin surface pH and sebum content on both the forehead and the forearms.
In males, the highest sebum content was found on the forearm and the forehead in the age groups 36-50 (93.47 +/- 10.01 microg/cm(2)) and 51-70 years (9.16 +/- 1.95 microg/cm(2)), while in females, the highest sebum content was found on the forearm and the forehead in the age groups 13-35 (61.91 +/- 6.12 microg/cm(2)) and 51-70 years (7.54 +/- 2.55 microg/cm(2)). The forehead sebum content was higher in males aged 13-70 years than in age-matched females; the sebum content on the forehead in both males and females was higher than that on the forearm. Skin surface pH on the forehead of both males and females over the age of 70 years was higher than that in younger groups. SC hydration on the forehead in both males and females was lower above the age of 70, and the one in males aged 13-35 was higher than that in females (43.99 +/- 1.88 vs. 36.38 +/- 1.67 AU, p < 0.01). SC hydration on the forehead in both males and females did not significantly differ from that on the forearm.
In a large Chinese cohort, the skin surface pH, sebum content and SC hydration vary with age, gender and body site.
Chloritoid–glaucophane‐bearing rocks are widespread in the high‐pressure belt of the north Qilian orogen, NW China. They are interbedded and cofacial with felsic schists originated from greywackes, ...mafic garnet blueschists and low‐T eclogites. Two representative chloritoid–glaucophane‐bearing assemblages are chloritoid + glaucophane + garnet + talc + quartz (sample Q5‐49) and chloritoid + glaucophane + garnet + phengite + epidote + quartz (sample Q5‐12). Garnet in sample Q5‐49 is coarse‐, medium‐ and fine‐grained and shows two types of zonation patterns. In pattern I, Xgrs is constant as Xpy rises, and in pattern II Xgrs decreases as Xpy rises. Phase equilibrium modelling in the NC(K)MnFMASH system with Thermocalc 3.25 indicates that pattern I can be formed during progressive metamorphism in lawsonite‐stable assemblages, while pattern II zonation can be formed with further heating after lawsonite has been consumed. Garnet growth in Q5‐49 is consistent with a continuous progressive metamorphic process from ∼14.5 kbar at 470 °C to ∼22.5 kbar at 560 °C. Garnet in sample Q5‐12 develops with pattern I zonation, which is consistent with a progressive metamorphic process from ∼21 kbar at 540 °C to ∼23.5 kbar at 580 °C with lawsonite present in the whole garnet growth. The latter sample shows the highest P–T conditions of the reported chloritoid–glaucophane‐bearing assemblages. Phase equilibrium calculation in the NCKFMASH system with a recent mixing model of amphibole indicates that chloritoid + glaucophane paragenesis does not have a low‐pressure limit of 18–19 kbar as previously suggested, but has a much larger pressure range from 7–8 to 27–30 kbar, with the low‐pressure part being within the stability field of albite.
Over the last 40 years, many types of population genetic markers have been used to assess the population structure of the pest moth species Helicoverpa armigera. While this species is highly vagile, ...there is evidence of inter-continental population structure. Here, we examine Z-chromosome molecular markers within and between Chinese and Australian populations. Using 1352 polymorphic sites from 40 Z-linked loci, we compared two Chinese populations of moths separated by 700 km and found virtually no population structure (n = 41 and n = 54, with <1% of variation discriminating between populations). The levels of nucleotide diversity within these populations were consistent with previous estimates from introns in Z-linked genes of Australian samples (π = 0.028 vs. 0.03). Furthermore, all loci surveyed in these Chinese populations showed a skew toward rare variants, with ten loci having a significant Tajima's D statistic, suggesting that this species could have undergone a population expansion. Eight of the 40 loci had been examined in a previous study of Australian moths, of which six revealed very little inter-continental population structure. However, the two markers associated with the Cyp303a1 locus that has previously been proposed to be a target of a selective sweep, exhibited allele structuring between countries. Using a separate dataset of 19 Australian and four Chinese moths, we scanned the molecular variation distributed across the entire Z-chromosome and found distinct blocks of differentiation that include the region containing Cyp303a1. We recommend some of these loci join those associated with insecticide resistance to form a set of genes best suited to analyzing population structure in this global pest.
Objective
This study investigated whether obesity is linked with dental caries. This study hypothesized that obesity may influence the number or prevalence of dental caries in Korean adults.
Subjects ...and Methods
Data were derived from Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey performed at 2008–2010. Lifestyle, sociodemographic, and biochemical variables were analyzed. Indices related to obesity, sarcopenia, and metabolic syndrome were investigated. Finally, caries index and oral health behaviors were included for the analysis.
Results
The caries index was inversely associated with increasing body mass index (BMI) and body fat quartile (all p‐values <.01). Subjects with high waist circumference who met the inclusion criteria of metabolic syndrome were less likely to have decayed tooth (p‐value = .0009). Subjects with a BMI of 25 or more showed about 20% less prevalence of dental caries experience than normal individuals with a BMI of 18.5 to 23 glucose (odds ratio 95% confidence intervals = 0.808 0.684–0.956). Similarly, subjects with total body fat in the highest quartile revealed about 20% less prevalence of caries experiences that those with body fat proportion in the lowest quartile (0.84 0.672,1.049).
Conclusions
Obesity was inversely associated with occurrence or severity of dental caries in Korean adults.

Hypothesis-generating (n=85) and confirmatory (n=111) samples were scored by blinded readers for fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) hyperintensity in diffusion-positive regions. Reader-measured signal intensity ratio (SIR) of the lesion to contralateral tissue was compared with SIR measured by coregistration.
Lesion conspicuity increased with time on FLAIR (P=0.006). Qualitative assessment of FLAIR-negative vs FLAIR hyperintensity (k=0.7091; 95% CI, 0.61-0.81) showed good interrater agreement. Subtle hyperintensity was less reliably categorized (k=0.59; 95% CI, 0.47-0.71). Reader-measured SIR <1.15 can identify patients within the treatable time window of 4.5 hours (positive predictive value=0.90). The SIR was greater for right hemisphere lesions (P=0.04) for a given reported time from stroke symptom onset.
The SIR on FLAIR provides a quantitative tool to identify early ischemic strokes. In developing SIR thresholds, right hemisphere lesions may confound the accurate estimate of stroke onset time. Image coregistration for thrombolytic trial enrollment is not necessary. A SIR <1.15 on FLAIR yields a practical estimate of stroke onset within 4.5 hours.
The tumour suppressor gene RASSF1A is frequently silenced in lung cancer and other sporadic tumours as a result of hypermethylation of a CpG island in its promoter. However, the precise mechanism by ...which RASSF1A functions in cell cycle regulation and tumour suppression has remained unknown. Here we show that RASSF1A regulates the stability of mitotic cyclins and the timing of mitotic progression. RASSF1A localizes to microtubules during interphase and to centrosomes and the spindle during mitosis. The overexpression of RASSF1A induced stabilization of mitotic cyclins and mitotic arrest at prometaphase. RASSF1A interacts with Cdc20, an activator of the anaphase-promoting complex (APC), resulting in the inhibition of APC activity. Although RASSF1A does not contribute to either the Mad2-dependent spindle assembly checkpoint or the function of Emi1 (ref. 1), depletion of RASSF1A by RNA interference accelerated the mitotic cyclin degradation and mitotic progression as a result of premature APC activation. It also caused a cell division defect characterized by centrosome abnormalities and multipolar spindles. These findings implicate RASSF1A in the regulation of both APC-Cdc20 activity and mitotic progression.
Cross sections for the neutrons around 14 MeV interaction with natural titanium were precisely measured by neutron activation and off-line measurement technique. The fast neutrons were produced by ...3H(d,n)4He reaction and the neutron energy was obtained by using the cross section ratio method of 90Zr(n,2n)89Zr to 93Nb(n,2n)92mNb reactions. Experimental cross sections have been acquired for natTi(n,x)46Sc, natTi(n,x)47Sc, 50Ti(n,x)47Ca and 48Ti(n,x)48Sc reactions. The measured cross section data are compared with the experimental data available in the previous literature and evaluated nuclear data from the ENDF/B-VIII.0, JEFF-3.3, JENDL-5, BROND-3.1, CENDL-3.2 and FENDL-3.2b libraries. Furthermore, excitation functions for these reactions were calculated by using the theoretical model based on Talys-1.96 code with default and adjusted parameters. Within experimental error, evaluated nuclear data are mostly consistent with experimental data. The excitation function with adjusted parameters can roughly reproduce the experimental data.
