Phys.Lett.B528:215-220,2002 The differential cross section for the reaction p(gamma, eta p) has been
measured from threshold to 1100 MeV photon laboratory energy. For the first
time, the region of ...the S11(1535) resonance is fully covered in a
photoproduction experiment and allows a precise extraction of its parameters at
the photon point. Above 1000 MeV, S-wave dominance vanishes while a P-wave
contribution is observed whose nature will have to be clarified. These high
precision data together with the already measured beam asymmetry data will
provide stringent constraints on the extraction of new couplings of baryon
resonances to the eta meson.
To identify possible risk factors for central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO).
Between May 1, 1986, and December 31, 1990, 258 patients with CRVO and 1142 controls were identified at five clinical ...centers. Data were obtained through interviews, clinical examinations, and laboratory analyses of blood specimens.
An increased risk of CRVO was found in persons with systemic hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and open-angle glaucoma. Risk of CRVO decreased with increasing levels of physical activity and increasing levels of alcohol consumption. In women, risk of occlusion decreased with use of postmenopausal estrogens and increased with higher erythrocyte sedimentation rates. Cardiovascular disease, electrocardiographic abnormalities, history of treatment of diabetes mellitus, higher blood glucose levels, lower albumin-globulin ratios, and higher alpha-globulin levels were associated with increased risk only for ischemic CRVO. Systemic hypertension was associated with increased risk for ischemic and nonischemic CRVO, but odds ratios were greater for the ischemic type.
Our results suggest a cardiovascular risk profile for persons with CRVO, in particular, patients with the ischemic type. The findings reinforce recommendations to diagnose and treat systemic hypertension, advise patients to increase physical exercise, and consider use of exogenous estrogens in postmenopausal women.
We have studied the angular fluctuations in the speed of light with respect to the apex of the dipole of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation using the experimental data obtained with GRAAL ...facility, located at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble. The measurements were based on the stability of the Compton edge of laser photons scattered on the 6 GeV monochromatic electron beam. The results enable to obtain a conservative constraint on the anisotropy in the light speed variations \Delta c(\theta)/c < 3 10^{-12}, i.e. with higher precision than from previous experiments.
The lens opacity characteristics of individuals constitute multivariate data. Our goal was to estimate the associations between the three main types of age‐related lens opacities (nuclear, cortical, ...posterior subcapsular) both between and within eyes of individuals using cross‐sectional data from the Framingham (Massachusetts) Eye Studies. We describe use of a recently proposed extension of the generalized estimating equations approach to marginal logistic models (GEE2), and we demonstrate that a variety of research problems can be investigated with this methodology. For example, in our data, there were strong associations of the same opacity types between the two eyes of individuals and weak associations between different types of opacities. We also note that estimation of such associations may be limited in other epidemiologic settings.
Experimental information has been derived from the neutron-proton correlation function in order to deduce the time sequence of neutrons and protons emitted at 45 degrees in the E/A = 45 MeV 58Ni + ...27Al reaction.
CHIMERA (Charged Heavy Ions Mass and Energy Resolving Array), a new 4/spl pi/ detector for charged particles is under development at various sites of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare. This ...paper describes the new data acquisition system built to handle the signals coming out from the detector with a rate up to 1 kHz on almost 5000 electronic channels. The required average throughput for the system is in the order of the 1 MB/s. The used converters allow double-range conversion on 15 bits, in less than 50 /spl mu/s for all the 64 channels. The FDL link connects the different VME 9U crates performing a programmable hardware readout with a rate up to 100 MB/s. It uses a fast hardware protocol (Sparse Data Scan) to read the data buffers and send them to a FIC 8243 CPU board. A FIC 8243 dual-processor board forwards data (through Ethernet) to the analysis station (266 MHz Digital AlphaStation or Sun Sparcstation). A DLT (Digital Linear Tape) unit connected to analysis station is used to store data. The new data acquisition system has been tested under beam conditions at the Laboratorio Nazionale del Sud (Catania, Italy) and at GANIL (Caen, France).
