Word formation in Slavic studies is generally accorded the status of an independent linguistic discipline, although it is frequently subsumed under grammar in course books. The basis of the ...theoretical framework which serves to define its linguistic status lies in systemising the terminology employed, as well as determining the boundaries which distinguish it from other linguistic disciplines and their linguistic units. As there is no synonymous internationalism for this discipline in the Croatian language, the term derivatology has been employed for the discipline itself, derivatologist refers to a linguist practising the discipline, derivatography refers to derivatological literature, and derivateme to a linguistic unit that is formed as the lexical fund grows. An analysis of the multiple motivation of derivateme formation has revealed an asymmetrical relationship between derivatemes and lexemes. The paper discusses two questions on the grammar of the Croatian language in the 2013 A-level test that were disputable from the scientific point of view. One question relates to the category of ...definiteness and the other to the formation of the word ledolomac (icebreaker). The analysis and argumentation led to the conclusion that these two questions must not have been put in the test. The issue has been taken even further in opening a discussion about the status of the suffix -(a)c and about multiple motivation in word formation.

Središnja je tema ovoga rada gramatička višeznačnost kategorije broja, utvrđivanje njezinih osnovnih tipova te otkrivanje asimetričnosti njezinih gramema, osobito u terminološkim sustavima, koja nije ...uočena i valjano opisana u hrvatskim jezičnim priručnicima. Budući da je odnos kategorije brojivosti u imenica i kategorije broja čvrsto isprepleten da bi se mogao potpuno zaobići, bit će riječi i o njem s osvrtom na kroatističku literaturu i na neka sporna mišljenja. Predložit će se nekoliko dopuna u nazivlju i u tumačenju kategorije broja radi poboljšanja ne samo gramatičkih opisa nego i gramatičke obrade natuknica u rječnicima, u kojima se jasnije ogleda nerazdvojivost gramatike i semantike upravo na primjeru kategorije broja.
Within the Croatian language studies, Dalibor Brozović’s periodization of the history of the Croatian literary language prevails in use. Some Croatian linguists question the dating of the beginning ...of the standardization process in the Croatian language, but they do not question the definition of periods and their respective characteristics. The paper tries: first, to solve some issues of the terminology of standardology in the Croatian language studies; second, to offer reperiodization of the history of the Croatian literary language and third, to compare that reperiodization to the periodization of other European literary languages.
