Abstract
Organophosphates (OPs) are the most heavily used pesticides in China. The Chinese population, including preconceptional women, is highly exposed, yet little is known regarding the ...associations between OP exposure and menstruation in humans. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis in women preparing for pregnancy to investigate the relationship between biomarkers of OP exposure and menstrual cycle characteristics. From 2013 to 2015, 627 women visiting free preconception-care clinics at 2 maternity hospitals in Shanghai, China, were included. Information on menstrual cycle characteristics was obtained through questionnaires. OP exposure was assessed by measuring urine concentrations of 6 dialkylphosphate metabolites (dimethylphosphate, dimethylthiophosphate, dimethyldithiophosphate, diethylphosphate, diethylthiophosphate, and diethyldithiophosphate). The relationship between concentrations of dialkylphosphate metabolites and menstrual cycle characteristics was analyzed using multiple linear regression models and logistic regression models. Log-transformed levels of diethyl phosphate metabolites (the sum of diethylphosphate and diethylthiophosphate levels) were related to a higher risk of irregularity of menstrual cycles (adjusted odds ratio = 2.36, 95% confidence interval: 1.28, 4.34). Subjects with a higher concentration of diethyl phosphate metabolites (log-transformed) had a shorter duration of menstrual bleeding (adjusted β = −0.33, 95% confidence interval: −0.64, −0.02). The findings suggest that OP exposure may be associated with alterations in menstrual function in preconceptional women.
Evidence showed that air pollution was associated with an increased risk of tuberculosis (TB). This study aimed to study the impact of long-term exposure to ambient particulate matter with an ...aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 μm (PM
) on the acquisition of LTBI and on the risk of subsequent active disease development among rural older adults from a multicentre cohort, which have not yet been investigated to date. A total of 4790 older adults were included in a population-based, multicentre, prospective cohort study (LATENTTB-NSTM) from 2013 to 2018. The level of long-term exposure to PM
for each participant was assessed by aggregating satellite-based estimates. Logistic regression and time-varying Cox proportional hazards models with province-level random intercepts were employed to assess associations of long-term exposures to PM
with the risk of LTBI and subsequent development of active TB, respectively. Out of 4790 participants, 3284 were LTBI-free at baseline, among whom 2806 completed the one-year follow-up and 127 developed newly identified LTBI. No significant associations were identified between PM
and the risk of LTBI. And among 1506 participants with LTBI at baseline, 30 active TB cases were recorded during the 5-year follow-up. Particularly, an increment of 5 μg/m
in 2-year moving averaged PM
was associated with a 50.6% increased risk of active TB (HR = 1.506, 95% CI: 1.161-1.955). Long-term air pollution might be a neglected risk factor for active TB development from LTBI, especially for those living in developing or less-developed areas where the air quality is poor.
Current knowledge about the evolutionary history of donkeys is still incomplete due to the lack of archeological and whole-genome diversity data. To fill this gap, we have de novo assembled a ...chromosome-level reference genome of one male Dezhou donkey and analyzed the genomes of 126 domestic donkeys and seven wild asses. Population genomics analyses indicate that donkeys were domesticated in Africa and conclusively show reduced levels of Y chromosome variability and discordant paternal and maternal histories, possibly reflecting the consequences of reproductive management. We also investigate the genetic basis of coat color. While wild asses show diluted gray pigmentation (Dun phenotype), domestic donkeys display non-diluted black or chestnut coat colors (non-Dun) that were probably established during domestication. Here, we show that the non-Dun phenotype is caused by a 1 bp deletion downstream of the TBX3 gene, which decreases the expression of this gene and its inhibitory effect on pigment deposition.
This letter presents the design of a Ka-band active integrated antenna in package (AIAiP). A monolithic microwave integrated circuit amplifier based on the GaAs process and a compact patch antenna ...based on the printed circuit board process are implemented, respectively. Then, the amplifier and antenna are assembled together in a specified package using the wire-bond process. Thus, compared to the traditional solutions, the transmission loss and the size of the proposed AIAiP are significantly reduced. Furthermore, the influence of the bonding wire and the package is taken into account in the design of the amplifier and the antenna, respectively. A good agreement between the simulation and measurement results can be observed. The proposed AIAiP occupies a compact size of 7 × 7 mm 2 . Meanwhile, it achieves -10-dB impedance bandwidth from 33.4 to 37.2 GHz and a peak gain of 18.9 dBi at 35 GHz. Additionally, the impact of the package size on the antenna performance has been demonstrated for future AIA designers.
•Greater proximity to greenspace was associated with larger brain volumes.•Greater proximity to natural environment was associated with larger brain volumes.•Smoking and physical activity mediated ...associations between greenspace and brain volumes.•Vitamin D, red blood cell indices, and creatinine were important mediators for the association.
To examine the associaiton between environmental measures and brain volumes and its potential mediators.
This was a prospective study.
Our analysis included 34,454 participants (53.4% females) aged 40–73 years at baseline (between 2006 and 2010) from the UK Biobank. Brain volumes were measured using magnetic resonance imaging between 2014 and 2019.
Greater proximity to greenspace buffered at 1000 m at baseline was associated with larger volumes of total brain measured 8.8 years after baseline assessment (standardized β (95% CI) for each 10% increment in coverage: 0.013(0.005,0.020)), grey matter (0.013(0.006,0.020)), and white matter (0.011(0.004,0.017)) after adjustment for covariates and air pollution. The corresponding numbers for natural environment buffered at 1000 m were 0.010 (0.004,0.017), 0.009 (0.004,0.015), and 0.010 (0.004,0.016), respectively. Similar results were observed for greenspace and natural environment buffered at 300 m. The strongest mediator for the association between greenspace buffered at 1000 m and total brain volume was smoking (percentage (95% CI) of total variance explained: 7.9% (5.5–11.4%)) followed by mean sphered cell volume (3.3% (1.8–5.8%)), vitamin D (2.9% (1.6–5.1%)), and creatinine in blood (2.7% (1.6–4.7%)). Significant mediators combined explained 18.5% (13.2–25.3%) of the association with total brain volume and 32.9% (95% CI: 22.3–45.7%) of the association with grey matter volume. The percentage (95% CI) of the association between natural environment and total brain volume explained by significant mediators combined was 20.6% (14.7–28.1%)).
Higher coverage percentage of greenspace and environment may benefit brain health by promoting healthy lifestyle and improving biomarkers including vitamin D and red blood cell indices.
We demonstrate a miniature fiber-optic two two-photon endomicroscopy with microsphere-spliced double-cladding antiresonant fiber for resolution enhancement. An easy-to-operate process for fixing ...microsphere permanently in an antiresonant fiber core, by arc discharge, is proposed. The flexible fiber-optic probe is integrated with a parameter of 5.8 mm × 49.1 mm (outer diameter × rigid length); the field of view is 210 µm, the resolution is 1.3 µm, and the frame rate is 0.7 fps. The imaging ability is verified using ex-vivo mouse kidney, heart, stomach, tail tendon, and in-vivo brain neural imaging.
The tumor microenvironment heterogeneity of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is poorly characterized. The relationship between PTC and Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) is also in doubt. Here, we used ...single-cell RNA sequencing to map the transcriptome landscape of PTC from eight PTC patients, of which three were concurrent with HT. Predicted copy number variation in epithelial cells and mesenchymal cells revealed the distinct molecular signatures of carcinoma cells. Carcinoma cells demonstrated intertumoral heterogeneity based on
BRAF
V600E mutation or lymph node metastasis, and some altered genes were identified to be correlated with disease-free survival in The Cancer Genome Atlas datasets. In addition, transcription factor regulons of follicular epithelial cells unveil the different transcription activation state in PTC patients with or without concurrent HT. The immune cells in tumors exhibited distinct transcriptional states, and the presence of tumor-infiltrating B lymphocytes was predominantly linked to concurrent HT origin. Trajectory analysis of B cells and plasma cells suggested their migration potential from HT adjacent tissues to tumor tissues. Furthermore, we revealed diverse ligand–receptor pairs between non-immune cells, infiltrating myeloid cells, and lymphocytes. Our results provided a single-cell landscape of human PTC. These data would deepen the understanding of PTC, as well as the immunological link between PTC and HT.
Collectors commonly have synergetic effects in ores flotation. In this work, a waste engine oil (WEO) was introduced as a collector to an ilmenite flotation system with sodium oleate (NaOL). The ...results show that the floatability of ilmenite was significantly improved by using WEO and NaOL as a combined collector. The recovery of ilmenite was enhanced from 71.26% (only NaOL) to 93.89% (WEO/NaOL combined collector) at the pH of 6.72. The optimum molar ratio of NaOL to WEO was about 2.08 to 1. The WEO and NaOL also have synergetic effects for the collection of ilmenite, because to obtain the ilmenite recovery of 53.96%, the dosage of 45 mg/L NaOL is equal to 38.56 mg/L WEO/NaOL combined collector (30 mg/L NaOL + 8.56 mg/L WEO). In other words, 15 mg/L of NaOL can be replaced by 8.56 mg/L of WEO. It is an effective way to reduce the dosage of the collector and reuse WEO. Therefore, it is a highly valuable and environmentally friendly approach for WEO reuse. WEO mainly consists of oxygen functional groups, aromatics, and long-chain hydrocarbons, especially for the RCONH2 and RCOOH, thereby forming a strong interaction on the ilmenite surface. The adsorption mechanism of waste engine oil and sodium oleate on the ilmenite surface is mainly contributed by chemical adsorption. Therefore, WEO exhibits superior synergistic power with NaOL as a combined collector. Herein, this work provided an effective collector for ilmenite flotation and a feasible approach for reducing NaOL dosage and recycling WEO.
Paper-based metamaterial is one kind of metamaterial based on the paper substrate, recently drawing a lot of attention due to its fascinating features. This paper proposes another fabrication ...solution to realize paper-based metamaterials by directly drawing instead of inkjet printing. The drawing tools we used included mechanical pencils, conductive ink pens, and a computer-controlled drawing machine. Three types of paper-based metamaterials—polarization converter, absorber, and conformal coding metasurface—have been fabricated by the drawing technique. The performances of these paper-based metamaterials have been validated through both simulations and measurements. The proposed drawing technique offers an economical, convenient, and flexible way to fabricate paper-based metamaterials with the advantages of thinness, lightness, and softness. It would be promising to apply in other regions of microwaves and electronics.
