A class of 5-trifluoroacetylamino-1,3-dioxacycloalkanes, 5-benzoylamino-1,3-dioxacycloalkanes, and 5-amino-1,3-dioxacycloalkane compounds were stereoselectively synthesized as potential ...anti-inflammatory drug candidates. The anti-inflammatory activities of these compounds were tested using the xylene-induced mouse ear edema model, from which multiple compounds possessing anti-inflammatory properties which surpass aspirin were identified; these compounds were then compared to establish structure–activity relationships.

We consider pure Yang–Mills theory on the four torus. A set of non-Abelian transition functions which encompass all instanton sectors is presented. It is argued that these transition functions are a ...convenient starting point for gauge fixing. In particular, we give an extended Abelian projection with respect to the Polyakov loop, whereA0is independent of time and in the Cartan subalgebra. In the non-perturbative sectors such gauge fixings are necessarily singular. These singularities can be restricted to Dirac strings joining monopole and anti-monopole like “defects”.
Brooke–Spiegler syndrome (BSS, familial cylindromatosis or turban tumor syndrome) is an inherited disease characterized by neoplasms of the skin appendages such as cylindroma, trichoepithelioma, and ...spiradenoma. The disease has been mapped to 16q12-13, and mutations in the CYLD gene have been identified in families with this disorder. Of interest, multiple familial trichoepithelioma (MFT) has been described as a distinct disorder characterized by the familial occurrence of trichoepitheliomas. MFT has been mapped to 9p21; however, to date a candidate gene has not been identified. In this report, we describe a four-generation family with BSS presenting predominantly with trichoepitheliomas (resembling MFT phenotype). We identified a novel missense mutation in the CYLD gene, designated E474G, in the affected individuals of this family. Our findings exemplify clinical heterogeneity within BSS and extend the body of evidence that mutations in CYLD are implicated in this disease. Although not conclusive, these findings suggest that BSS and MFT may represent a single entity.
We describe a simple and effective method to obtain colloidal surface-functionalized Au nanoparticles. The method is primarily based on irradiation of a gold solution with high-flux X-rays from a ...synchrotron source in the presence of 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA). Extensive tests of the products demonstrated high colloidal density as well as excellent stability, shelf life, and biocompatibility. Specific tests with X-ray diffraction, UV-visible spectrometry, visible microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, dark-field visible-light scattering microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy demonstrated that MUA, being an effective surfactant, not only allows tunable size control of the nanoparticles, but also facilitates functionalization. The nanoparticle sizes were 6.45 ± 1.58, 1.83 ± 1.21, 1.52 ± 0.37 and 1.18 ± 0.26 nm with no MUA and with MUA-to-Au ratios of 1:2, 1:1, and 3:1. The MUA additionally enabled functionalization with l-glycine. We thus demonstrated flexibility in controlling the nanoparticle size over a large range with narrow size distribution.
Background: Osteoporosis is a common problem in postmenopausal period. Recent studies have suggested that endogenous and exogenous androgens may influence the bone mineral density in women. There is ...limited data about the effect of circulating androgens on bone density in postmenopausal women.
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of circulating androgens of ovarian and adrenal origin on bone mineral density in postmenopausal women.
Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study included 178 postmenopausal women, who had never been treated with hormonal therapy or calciotropic agents. Serum free testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate and androstenedione levels and their relationship with bone mass (dual X-ray absorptiometry) were evaluated.
Results: Serum free testosterone and DHEAS levels were correlated positively with bone mineral density at lumbar spine and femoral neck (
P<0.001). However, stepwise linear regression analyses revealed a differential effect of androgens on bone density. Serum free testosterone was among the independent predictor of bone density at lumbar spine (trabecular bone), whereas serum DHEAS level was of bone density at femoral neck (cortical bone).
Conclusion: This study suggests that endogenous androgens are influential on bone density in postmenopausal women. However, regression analyses revealed a differential effect of androgens on different bone types.
