Background The recommendations of both the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) and the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) for the prevention of cancer are important public health tools. ...These recommendations for the prevention of specific cancers are related to body weight maintenance; physical activity; foods and drinks that promote weight gain; plant foods; foods of animal origin; alcoholic beverages; preservation, processing, and preparation of food; food supplements; and breastfeeding. Methods This study was a descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective study. All patients provided written informed consent prior to enrollment in the study. Stratified random sampling was carried out with a convenience sample size of ≥280 participants. The characteristics of the participants were investigated using validated questions. Knowledge about the WCRF/AICR recommendations for the primary prevention of cancer was determined using 14 multiple choice questions validated in this study. Group A included participants who answered that cancer can be prevented and that lifestyle is the main factor related to the onset of cancer; the remaining participants were assigned to Group B. The χ2 test and Mann‒Whitney U test were used to determine differences in the groups. A p -value of ≤0.05 was considered statistically significant. A multiple linear regression analysis with gamma response was performed to assess the knowledge score. Results A total of 289 participants were included; 168 (58%) participants were in group A, and 121 (42%) participants were in group B. Using a 0 to 14 scale, the median (P25, P75) number of correct answers was 11 (10, 12). There was no evidence of a difference between groups in sex, relationship status, literacy skills, years of education, occupation, monthly income per person, and BMI. Most of the participants reported that they did not consume tobacco ( n = 259/289) or alcohol ( n = 261/289) in the week prior to completing the survey. Discussion Most of the participants (58%) considered cancer preventable and agreed that lifestyle factors were the most important factors in cancer development. The results also showed a high level of public awareness of some evidence-based associations between cancer and lifestyle factors, such as tobacco use. Some confusion among the public on other risk factors was also identified: waist circumference, a variable related to excess weight, was not identified as a risk factor for cancer by most of the participants, but the consumption of foods and beverages high in calories was identified as a risk factor by the majority of participants. Awareness of cancer protective and risk factors may lead to positive behavioral changes and eventually reduce the burden of cancer.
BackgroundCOVID-19 vaccination is a global priority. Latin American countries have some of the highest COVID-19 death rates worldwide with vaccination hampered by a variety of reasons, including mis- ...and disinformation, vaccine hesitancy, and vaccine supply constraints. Addressing vaccine hesitancy through effective messages has been found to help increase vaccine uptake. Participatory processes could be used to co-design health messages for this purpose.ObjectiveThis article describes the methodology used to co-design evidence-based audio messages to be deployed in a cohort of individuals through an interactive voice response (IVR) mobile phone survey intervention, aimed towards increasing vaccination uptake in an adult population in Colombia.MethodsParticipants of the COVID-19 vaccination message co-design process included a sample of the general population of the country, representatives of the funder organisation, and research team members. The co-design process consisted of four phases: (1) formative quantitative and qualitative research, (2) message drafting based on the results of the formative research, (3) message content evaluation, and (4) evaluation of the voices to deliver the audio messages; and was informed by reflexive meetings.ResultsThree categories of evidence-based audio messages were co-designed, each corresponding to an arm of the mHealth intervention: (1) factual messages, (2) narrative messages, and (3) mixed messages. An additional fourth arm with no message was proposed for control. The iterative co-design process ended with a total of 14 audio messages recorded to be deployed via the intervention.ConclusionsCo-developing health messages in response to health emergencies is possible. Adopting more context-relevant, participatory, people-centred, and reflexive multidisciplinary approaches could help develop solutions that are more responsive to the needs of populations and public health priorities. Investing resources in message co-design is deemed to have a greater potential for influencing behaviours and improving health outcomes.
Objective: To analyze the clinical records of patients with gastric adenocarcinoma, treated at two different public health institutions in Mexico to determine survival rates. Methods: Cox ...proportional-hazards model was fitted to identify the factors involved in survival of patients. Result: The results show that subjects aged 41 to 50 years of age had a 56% lower risk of death from gastric cancer compared to those <40 years of age. Asthenia and/or adynamia, weight loss and leukocytosis increased the risk of dying. The incidence of melena was found to be a protective factor for mortality. Conclusion: At age <40 years, symptoms such as asthenia, adynamia and weight loss and leukocytosis are poor prognosis predictors in patients with gastric cancer. Melena seems to be a protective sign of gastric cancer mortality in Mexico. Given the low 5-year survival rate in patients with gastric cancer, further studies are necessary to explore the factors associated with survival to contribute to effective intervention.
Background
Antibody-mediated immune response plays an important role in protection against reinfection. In the case of SARS-CoV-2 infection, the maximum duration of antibody response is still ...unknown. In this work, the generation of neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) and IgG antibodies against the S1 subunit (S1 IgG ) of SARS-CoV-2 and their possible duration were determined through decay models.
Methods
132 participants with SARS-CoV-2 infection were classified according to the severity of the disease. Seroconversion and persistence of S1 IgG antibodies and NAbs were determined by ELISA, samples were taken at two different times post-infection and duration of those antibodies was estimated using Linear Mixed Models (LMMs).
Results
The highest amount of S1 IgGs antibodies was associated with age (41 years or older), greater severity of COVID-19 and male gender. NAbs production was associated with the same variables, except for age. The percentage of NAbs decay is higher in the asymptomatic group (
P
= 0.033), while in S1 IgG antibodies decay, no statistical difference was found between the 4 severity groups. An exponential decay model was built by using a LMM and similarly, two dispersion regions where constructed. The duration of S1 IgG antibodies was 744 days (668–781) for first region and 744 days (453–1231) for the second. Regarding NAbs, an adaptative LMM was used to model a logistic function, determining a duration of 267 days (215–347).
Conclusion
Humoral immunity to SARS-CoV-2 infection depends on the severity of the disease, gender and age. This immune response could be long-lasting as for other coronaviruses.
The causes of the broad spectrum of severity in COVID-19 are unknown. A protective effect through humoral immunity from previous infections by viruses of the SARS-CoV-2 family could explain a mild ...form of this disease. This study aimed to address whether the presence of antibodies against human seasonal coronaviruses (HCoVs) could prevent severe manifestations of COVID-19. A cross-sectional study was carried out in 165 participants. The presence of pre-existent antibodies against the seasonal HCoV-OC43, HCoV-HKU1, HCoV-229E, and HCoV-NL63 were detected. From all of the seasonal HCoVs studied, it was only found that being seropositive to HCoV-229E presented an association (p = 0.012) with developing mild clinical symptoms of COVID-19 or being asymptomatic. Multinomial regression analysis showed that being seropositive to HCoV-229E is associated with mild or moderate clinical symptoms for COVID-19. Statistical analysis also showed that being female is associated with being asymptomatic for SARS-CoV-2 infection or developing mild COVID-19. A subgroup analysis taking only seropositive to HCoV-229E revealed that females are more likely to develop asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection (OR = 27.242, 95% CI 2.092–354.706, p = 0.012). Our results suggest that previous infections by HCoV-229E could prevent more serious clinical manifestations of COVID-19, but these are not the only variables that influence this event.
Electroencephalography (EEG) is used in the diagnosis and prognosis of mental disorders because it provides brain biomarkers. However, only highly trained doctors can interpret EEG signals due to its ...complexity. Machine learning has been successfully trained with EEG signals for classifying mental disorders, but a time consuming and disorder-dependant feature engineering (FE) and subsampling process is required over raw EEG data. Deep Learning (DL) is positioned as a prominent research field to process EEG data because (i) it features automated FE by taking advantage of raw EEG signals improving results and (ii) it can be trained over the vast amount of data generated by EEG. In this work, a systematic mapping study has been performed with 46 carefully selected primary studies. Our goals were (i) to provide a clear view of which are the most prominent study topics in diagnosis and prognosis of mental disorders by using EEG with DL, and (ii) to give some recommendations for future works. Some results are: epilepsy was the predominant mental disorder present in around half of the studies, convolutional neural networks also appear in approximate 50% of the works. The main conclusions are (i) processing EEG with DL to detect mental disorders is a promising research field and (ii) to objectively compare performance between studies: public datasets, intra-subject validation, and standard metrics should be used. Additionally, we suggest to pay more attention to ease the reproducibility, and to use (when possible) an available framework to explain the results of the created DL models.

Aedes-borne viruses (ABV) affect humans on every inhabited continent and frequently cause epidemics. Recent epidemics of chikungunya and Zika viruses (ZIKV) highlight that preparedness for future epidemics requires assessment of susceptibility, particularly among high-risk groups. We sought to determine immunity against the three major circulating ABV among pregnant women in an ABV-endemic area of Colombia.
A cross-sectional seroprevalence study was performed, enrolling women presenting to Labor and Delivery. Cord blood and maternal peripheral blood samples were obtained. IgG seroprevalence to flaviviruses and chikungunya was determined by ELISA. An abbreviated neutralization test was used to estimate the frequency and magnitude of immunity to Zika and four dengue serotypes. Cluster analyses explored epidemiologic factors associated with seroprevalence.
Most women exhibited high levels of neutralizing antibodies to one or more ABV; however, nearly 20% were seronegative for flaviviruses. Our research took place after the epidemic peak of the ZIKV outbreak in Colombia in 2016. However, only 20% of pregnant women had high levels of Zika-neutralizing antibodies consistent with likely protective immunity to ZIKV.
Hence, a high proportion of pregnant women in Risaralda remain susceptible to one or more ABV including the teratogenic ZIKV, indicating a risk for future epidemics in this region.
Group B Streptococcus (GBS) causes infections in women during pregnancy and puerperium and invasive infections in newborns. The genes lmb, cylE, scpB, and hvgA are involved with increased virulence ...of GBS, and hypervirulent clones have been identified in different regions. In addition, increasing resistance of GBS to macrolides and lincosamides has been reported, so knowing the patterns of antibiotic resistance may be necessary to prevent and treat GBS infections. This study aimed to identify virulence genes and antibiotic resistance associated with GBS colonization in pregnant women from northeastern Mexico.
Pregnant women with 35-37 weeks of gestation underwent recto-vaginal swabbing. One swab was inoculated into Todd-Hewitt broth supplemented with gentamicin and nalidixic acid, a second swab was inoculated into LIM enrichment broth, and a third swab was submerged into a transport medium. All samples were subcultured onto blood agar. After overnight incubation, suggestive colonies with or without hemolysis were analyzed to confirm GBS identification by Gram staining, catalase test, hippurate hydrolysis, CAMP test, and incubation in a chromogenic medium. We used latex agglutination to confirm and serotype GBS isolates. Antibiotic resistance patterns were assessed by Vitek 2 and disk diffusion. Periumbilical, rectal and nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from some newborns of colonized mothers. All colonized women and their newborns were followed up for three months to assess the development of disease attributable to GBS. Draft genomes of all GBS isolates were obtained by whole-genome sequencing. In addition, bioinformatic analysis to identify genes encoding capsular polysaccharides and virulence factors was performed using BRIG, while antibiotic resistance genes were identified using the CARD database.
We found 17 GBS colonized women out of 1154 pregnant women (1.47%). None of the six newborns sampled were colonized, and no complications due to GBS were detected in pregnant women or newborns. Three isolates were serotype I, 5 serotype II, 3 serotype III, 4 serotype IV, and 2 serotype V. Ten distinct virulence gene profiles were identified, being scpB, lmb, fbsA, acp, PI-1, PI-2a, cylE the most common (3/14, 21%). The virulence genes identified were scpB, lmb, cylE, PI-1, fbsA, PI-2a, acp, fbsB, PI-2b, and hvgA. We identified resistance to tetracycline in 65% (11/17) of the isolates, intermediate susceptibility to clindamycin in 41% (7/17), and reduced susceptibility to ampicillin in 23.5% (4/17). The tetM gene associated to tetracyclines resistance was found in 79% (11/14) and the mel and mefA genes associated to macrolides resistance in 7% (1/14).
The low prevalence of colonization and the non-occurrence of mother-to-child transmission suggest that the intentional search for GBS colonization in this population is not justified. Our results also suggest that risk factors should guide the use of intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis. The detection of strains with genes coding virulence factors means that clones with pathogenic potential circulates in this region. On the other hand, the identification of decreased susceptibility to antibiotics from different antimicrobial categories shows the importance of adequately knowing the resistance patterns to prevent and to treat GBS perinatal infection.

(Ag) were collected on 4.15 hectares of a mangrove forest established in Histosol affected since 1967 by chronic oil spill in southeastern Mexico. The site was divided into four zones based on the amounts of total hydrocarbons of weathered petroleum (THWPs) accumulated in the soil for half a century. The abundance of intraradical propagules and the colonization structure of the AMFs in the roots of the two mangrove species were compared. The density of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSBs) in soil and rhizosphere samples was also evaluated. The degraded oil stimulated the amount of PSBs in Lr but not in Ag. AMF biodiversity was lower in the Ag root; however, spore abundance was higher. We found abundant spores of
Glomus claroideum
and
Diversispora aurantium
in tertiary and quaternary roots of the Ag in soils contaminated with 48462 mg of THWPs. This study provides evidence of the presence and abundance of intraradical propagules in different types of roots, which may be an alternative that contributes to the understanding of oil dissipation and in future applications for the restoration of degraded ecosystems.
