Several studies have investigated the acoustic effects of diagnosed anxiety and depression. Anxiety and depression are not characteristics of the typical aging process, but minimal or mild symptoms ...can appear and evolve with age. However, the knowledge about the association between speech and anxiety or depression is scarce for minimal/mild symptoms, typical of healthy aging. As longevity and aging are still a new phenomenon worldwide, posing also several clinical challenges, it is important to improve our understanding of non-severe mood symptoms' impact on acoustic features across lifetime. The purpose of this study was to determine if variations in acoustic measures of voice are associated with non-severe anxiety or depression symptoms in adult population across lifetime.
Two different speech tasks (reading vowels in disyllabic words and describing a picture) were produced by 112 individuals aged 35-97. To assess anxiety and depression symptoms, the Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS) was used. The association between the segmental and suprasegmental acoustic parameters and HADS scores were analyzed using the linear multiple regression technique.
The number of participants with presence of anxiety or depression symptoms is low (>7: 26.8% and 10.7%, respectively) and non-severe (HADS-A: 5.4 ± 2.9 and HADS-D: 4.2 ± 2.7, respectively). Adults with higher anxiety symptoms did not present significant relationships associated with the acoustic parameters studied. Adults with increased depressive symptoms presented higher vowel duration, longer total pause duration and short total speech duration. Finally, age presented a positive and significant effect only for depressive symptoms, showing that older participants tend to have more depressive symptoms.
Non-severe depression symptoms can be related to some acoustic parameters and age. Depression symptoms can be explained by acoustic parameters even among individuals without severe symptom levels.
Throughout recent years, ungulates have experienced significant increases in numbers and geographic range sizes in Europe, becoming locally overabundant populations in some regions. Changes in ...legislation regarding poaching, abandonment of land and re‐naturalisation of habitats, and decreasing numbers of hunters, among other things, have led to alarming scenarios in wild ungulate biology. Although ungulates bring some financial benefits for ecosystems and society through tourism and hunting, the problems associated with populations that are no longer controlled can outweigh the advantages. Damage to forestry and agriculture, ungulate‐vehicle collisions, and diseases are among the most concerning problems related to ungulate overabundance.
To deal with these problems and to decide on the best management strategy to apply, it is essential to have tools available to monitor populations with an integrative approach based on ecological change indicators, and to assess population and ecosystem status. Furthermore, in a globalised world, people’s opinions matter, and sociological studies regarding human perception of wild mammals must take place in order to allow proper management, including consideration of people’s expectations as well as animal and ecosystem needs. Successful and unsuccessful management strategies have already been attempted, and the knowledge of consequences over time enables an adaptive approach.
Management of ungulate populations is a complex subject, and each case should be studied, analysing the cost_performance balance of measures to be taken, and ensuring ongoing financial means to carry out and continue with successful ecosystem management strategies. Multidisciplinary teams should be built, including biologists, veterinarians, stakeholders, sociologists, and others, to deal with the management of European wild ungulate populations.
Ungulates such as red deer and wild boar have been increasing in the past decades in Europe, and so have their consequences. Damage to agriculture and forestry, emerging infectious diseases, and increasing ungulate‐vehicle collisions are only some of the consequences of ungulate populations that are no longer controlled. Ungulate expansion also increases conflicts among humans, and the study of these interactions should be integrated in an holistic perspective of ecosystems. This review gives researchers and the general public a brief summary of the situation of ungulates in Europe, suggests a novel socio‐ecological approach, and provides recommendations for stakeholders on how to deal with this situation, which is likely to intensify in the future.
The Iberian wolf (Canis lupus signatus) is a top predator that inhabits the Iberian Peninsula. In Portugal, its numbers and distribution declined throughout the 20th century, due to human ...persecution, habitat degradation and prey decline, which have led to higher predation rates of livestock in the remaining packs. In Montesinho Natural Park (northeast Portugal), wild ungulate populations have been increasing in the last years, which may have led wolf to predate upon them. In order to assess Iberian wolf diet in this area, 85 wolf scats were collected from transects distributed throughout the study area in two periods between November 2017 and August 2019. Scat analysis indicated a high predation on wild ungulates, where the frequency of occurrence showed that roe deer was the most consumed prey (44%), followed by red deer (26%) and wild boar (24%). Domestic/wild cat (6%), domestic goat and stone marten (5%) were consumed in lower quantities. It was found a higher selection towards roe deer (D = 0.71) and this was the only prey item which was significantly dependent of the season of the year (χ2 = 16.95, df = 3, p < 0.001). This is the first study in Portugal where was recorded that wolves feed mainly on wild ungulates. We conclude that lower livestock predation may be correlated with higher wild ungulates densities in our study area, as well as suitable husbandry practices, leading to a shift on Iberian wolf diet from mainly livestock on previous studies to wild ungulates.

The development of monoclonal and specific antibodies is time-consuming and expensive, but it can be greatly simplified with structural and allosteric information. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a powerful technique to study protein structure and dynamics, and it has proven to be efficient to analyze large protein complexes, despite the overall size limitation. Here, we discuss NMR approaches efficiently used to conformational epitope mapping.
The human dimension of wildlife is a subject of increasing interest, especially considering the potential impact of people's perceptions on decision-making concerning wildlife management and thus on ...species' distribution and abundance. This is particularly important for species that inhabit human-dominated landscapes, where conflicts are likely to arise. These conflicts typically emerge between different human collectives when their interests collide and thus an assessment of their perceptions is valuable. Throughout Europe, ungulates have expanded, and Portugal is no exception. The expansion of red deer (Cervus elaphus) comes with benefits (e.g. hunting opportunities), but also with costs (e.g. vehicle collision or damage to crops), that can shape people's perceptions of these populations. To assess perceptions of red deer populations in continental Portugal, we developed a questionnaire survey with three interest groups: general public, farmers and hunters (total n = 1532). Our results show that perceptions about red deer were generally positive with a high acknowledgement of deer benefits, which we link to a broad level of sympathy towards this species. In addition, farmers showed a higher concern with crop damage caused by deer than non-farmers. Nonetheless, a general lack of knowledge regarding wildlife was present, particularly among younger people, who are potentially more apart and disconnected from nature. Now is the time to implement preventive and mitigation measures – e.g. fencing, reduction of population density – which can be a small contribution to address this problem. The focus should be put on people's acceptance of the required strategies to manage deer populations (which can also include unpopular practices, such as hunting). For that, an evaluation of people's attitudes towards deer populations and awareness of associated problems is essential. People's opinions, as well as the success of monitoring and management strategies, should be evaluated through multi-disciplinary teams, that include natural and social scientists, to ensure their success.

To evaluate how different compartments of body composition can affect survival in hemodialysis (HD) patients.
Multicenter longitudinal observational study of a cohort of patients in HD with 12 months ...of follow-up.
Patients from 34 Nephrocare dialysis units in Portugal were included.
A total of 697 patients on maintenance HD during 4 hours 3 days per week were enrolled.
Dry weight, presence of diabetes, body mass index (BMI), lean tissue index (LTI), fat tissue index (FTI), body cell mass index (BCMI), albumin and hydration status were recorded at baseline. In all patients, the assessment of body composition was carried out using the Body Composition Monitor (BCM; Fresenius Medical Care a Deutschland GmbH, Germany).
Survival during a 12-month period of follow-up.
Patient's mean (±standard deviation) age was 65.4 ± 14.3 years, and median (interquartile range) HD vintage was 41 (19-81) months. Patients who died during the study period, had higher age (P < .001), lower dry weight (P = .001), BMI (P < .001), albumin (P < .001), LTI (P = .015), and also lower BCMI (P = .046). Patients with diabetes (P = .045), BMI < 18.5 kg/m(2) (P < .001), albumin < 4.0 g/dL (P < .001), relative overhydration ≥ 15% (P = .001), low FTI (P = .019), and also those in the lowest tertile of BCMI (P = .022) displayed a significantly worse survival. In the Cox regression analysis, the overall mortality of patient was related to low FTI, relative overhydration, BMI < 18.5 kg/m(2), BCMI ≤ 5.2 kg/m(2), and albumin < 4.0 g/dL.
Several body composition parameters demonstrated to have an important role in predicting 1-year mortality in HD patients. Albumin, FTI, and BMI were useful predictors of mortality in these patients.
(1) Background: Excessive meat consumption has raised multiple health and environmental concerns; however, there are no data on the population's willingness to reduce its intake for these reasons. ...The current study aims to assess the frequency of meat intake and readiness to limit consumption due to concern about the impact on health and the environment in residents of the Lisbon metropolitan region. (2) Methods: This analytical cross-sectional observational study was carried out in 197 residents in the metropolitan region of Lisbon. The participants were divided into two groups by age (GI: 20-29 years; GII: 40-64 years). Meat consumption and willingness to reduce it were assessed through a questionnaire. (3) Results: Most participants (67%) reported not having knowledge about the ecological footprint of meat. Being a less frequent meat consumer (<1 time per day) is associated with a willingness 3.6 times higher (
< 0.001) to reduce meat consumption due to sensitivity to the impact on health and 4.0 times higher (
< 0.001) due to environmental reasons. (4) Conclusions: Lower meat consumption frequency was associated with reductions in this consumption for environmental and health reasons.

Due to their catalytic properties, selectivity, and efficiency, enzymes are excellent biocatalysts. In particular, laccases are versatile multi-copper oxidases with great interest for a wide plethora of biotechnological and environmental applications. Even though several laccase-catalysed processes have been reported at an industrial level, the high costs of their downstream processing required to provide biocatalysts with high purity levels, stability and activity remains one of the main drawbacks when economically evaluating the overall processes. Aqueous biphasic systems based on ionic liquids (ILs) can be foreseen as a promising alternative approach for the extraction and activity maintenance/improvement of enzymes, essentially due to the designer solvents ability of ionic liquids. However, to take advantage of this feature and to use the full potential of IL-based aqueous biphasic systems, it is necessary to understand the effect of ILs as phase-forming constituents and how they affect the enzymes extraction and activity. In order to overcome the lack of information on this topic in the literature, in this work, IL-based aqueous biphasic systems were investigated to extract and enhance the laccase activity, in order to gather evidences that could be used to improve the enzymes downstream processing. To this end, a wide screening of imidazolium-, pyridinium-, pyrrolidinium-, piperidinium-, tetraalkylphosphonium-, and tetraalkylammonium-based ILs as phase-forming components of ABS was carried out. Furthermore, these ILs were used to create ABS combined with salts, polymers and used as adjuvants in polymer-based ABS. Most ABS comprising ILs revealed to be highly efficient extraction platforms, allowing the complete extraction of laccase for all the conditions tested, and with an enzyme activity enhancement by more than 50%. Overall, the obtained results demonstrate that laccase preferentially partitions to the most hydrophilic phase in ABS comprising ILs, both used as adjuvants or as phase-forming components, corresponding to the phase in which the IL is enriched. Furthermore, the IL chemical structure of the IL plays a significant role in the enzyme activity, where ILs with a higher number of hydroxyl groups seem to be relevant to improve the laccase activity.
(1) Background: Refugees are a population group at imminent risk of death, being forced to migrate to countries with different cultures. Many of the refugees are at great risk of malnutrition, ...especially adolescent orphans. The aim of the study was to establish a nutritional and food education program to improve the integration process of young orphan refugees newly arrived in Portugal. (2) Methods: A nutrition and food education program with nine sessions of food and nutrition education over 12 weeks was carried out by a nutritionist from March to June 2016, in 15 young residents of the Reception Center for Refugee Children. The program included the application of a nutritional knowledge questionnaire, an anthropometric assessment, and the collection of data on food habits and lifestyle. The evaluation of the program was carried out by comparing the initial and final scores of the nutritional knowledge questionnaire. (3) Results: There was an improvement in nutritional knowledge among the adolescents, and a direct relationship between attendance at the sessions and improvement of this knowledge was found. Non-significant changes were observed in some anthropometric measurements between the beginning and the ending of the program. (4) Conclusions: This food education program contributed to a better understanding by young orphan refugees newly arrived in Portugal of the foods available in Portugal and of the Portuguese gastronomy.
The endangered Iberian wolf (
Canis lupus signatus
) populations have been decreasing in Portugal due to a combination of factors such as habitat destruction and human persecution. This is ...particularly worrying in Central Portugal, where packs are highly fragmented, isolated, and with few individuals. Human-Wildlife-Conflicts occur in this area due to high levels of livestock depredation, an outcome of the low diversity and density of wild prey. As a consequence, human persecution is relatively high and is considered a main threat to wolves’ survival. Through studying public attitudes towards these wolf populations and discerning prevalent patterns, insights can be gained to guide management strategies in mitigating these factors. regarding the wolf. Attitudes towards wolves were positive, with the fear being neutral but the knowledge being low; attitudes tend to be more positive with the decrease of fear and the increase of knowledge, and fear tends to decrease with the increase of knowledge. The main factor negatively influencing attitudes was fear, although age seemed to have more influence on livestock owners’ attitudes. The factors influencing fear included gender, knowledge, and personal experience with wolves. These findings can be used to target specific groups with environmental awareness initiatives, aiming to increase knowledge and reduce sources of fear. It is crucial to develop tailored conservation measures considering stakeholders’ viewpoints to effectively protect the Iberian wolf.
