A prototype system of Fiber Optic Sensors (FOS) for the accurate measurement of temperature and relative humidity, has been installed inside the Inner Detector volume of the ATLAS experiment at the ...LHC. The goal is to evaluate the behavior of the technology against radiation effects, and possibly to assess its suitability for future collider experiments, starting from HL-LHC. It follows the description of the work that has led to the choice of the sensors, their testing and calibration in the laboratory, their successive installation and operation in ATLAS, and the development of the data acquisition chain. The first results on performance are reported.
Nystagmus is an eye movement disorder characterised by abnormal, involuntary rhythmic oscillations of one or both eyes, initiated by a slow phase. It is not uncommon in the UK and regularly seen in ...paediatric ophthalmology and adult general/strabismus clinics. In some cases, it occurs in isolation, and in others, it occurs as part of a multisystem disorder, severe visual impairment or neurological disorder. Similarly, in some cases, visual acuity can be normal and in others can be severely degraded. Furthermore, the impact on vision goes well beyond static acuity alone, is rarely measured and may vary on a minute-to-minute, day-to-day or month-to-month basis. For these reasons, management of children with nystagmus in the UK is varied, and patients report hugely different experiences and investigations. In this review, we hope to shine a light on the current management of children with nystagmus across five specialist centres in the UK in order to present, for the first time, a consensus on investigation and clinical management.
The purpose of the present study was to gain a better insight in the mechanism of naloxone underlying the regulation of adrenal cortisol secretion in humans in vivo; therefore, the stimulatory effect ...of naloxone on cortisol secretion was assessed in a group of patients with hypothalamo-pituitary disconnection. Patients with hypothalamo-pituitary disconnection because of various pathologies (craniopharingioma, cordoma, suprasellar meningioma, or pituitary macroadenoma) participated in the study.
Circulating cortisol, but not adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) levels were significantly higher after naloxone administration than after saline.
Besides the well-known hypothalamo-pituitary stimulatory action on ACTH release in normal humans, the results of the present study suggest that naloxone exerts direct effects on cortisol secretion at the adrenal gland level; another possibility is that naloxone stimulation of cortisol secretion is mediated by other factor than ACTH.

T-cell depletion is an essential step in reducing the risk of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in patients with inherited metabolic storage diseases (IMSD) undergoing hematopoietic stem cell ...transplantation. This goal can be achieved either by selective removal of T cells or by positive selection of CD34+ cells. Large-scale preparations of purified CD34+ cells from bone marrow products have not been extensively described. We report our results with bone marrow CD34+ cell enrichment using the CliniMACS system in eight children with IMSD. The median recovery of positively selected CD34+ cells was 46.2% with a purity of 97.5%, and a residual T cell content of 0.04 x 10(6). A median of 5.5 x 10(6)/kg of CD34+ cells was infused. All patients engrafted at a median time of 12 days and none of the patients developed GVHD. This method is technically feasible and can be successfully used to transplant children with IMSD.
As a possible candidate for extremely radiation tolerant tracking devices we present a novel detector design - namely 3D detectors - based on poly-crystalline CVD diamond sensors with a pixel ...readout. The fabrication of recent 3D detectors as well their results in recent beam tests are presented. We measured the hit efficiency and signal response of two 3D diamond detectors with 50 × 50 μm cell sizes using pixel readout chip technologies currently used at CMS and ATLAS. In all runs, both devices attained efficiencies >98 % in a normal incident test beam of minimum ionising particles. The highest efficiency observed during the beam tests was 99.2 %.
