A solvent free microwave hydrodiffusion and gravity extraction (MHG) of flavonol content from onion (Allium cepa L.) was studied. Effectiveness of this innovative method in extraction of onion total ...phenolic content, total quercetin (TQ), quercetin aglycon (QA), quercetin-3,4′-diglucoside (QDG), quercetin-4′-monoglucoside (Q4G), quercetin-3-monoglucoside (Q3G), kaempferol (KMF) and myricetin (MRT) have been evaluated and compared with conventional solvent extraction. Microwave extraction offers important advantages like shorter extraction time (23 min), cleaner feature (no solvent or water used) and extraction of valuable onion crude juice retaining fresh organoleptic properties with higher phenolic content (58.29 mg GAE/g DW) at optimized power (500 W). Microwave extraction resulted significant yield (81.5%) with 41.9% of flavonol contents, with better retain of remaining flavonoids (55.9%) in residues of onions. QDG (239.7 mg/100 g DW) and Q4G (82.55 mg/100 g DW) have been reported the main flavonol in this study. Minor quantities of QA (traces), Q3G (4.22 mg/100 g DW) and KMF (3.99 mg/100 g DW) were also detected in microwave onion extracts.

Organic farmers are interested in adopting conservation tillage to preserve soil quality and fertility and to prevent soil erosion. Within the framework of a French national study, we compared ...conventional (ploughing) and conservation tillage systems in organic farming for arable and vegetable cropping systems. Field experiments and on-farm surveys were conducted in several regions of France in order to assess the effects of different tillage systems on soil fertility (physical, chemical, biological) and on weed and crop development. Conservation tillage techniques induced a more compact soil, an increase of carbon and microorganisms in the first soil layer, and an increase of earthworm biomass for very superficial tillage. Weed control was only a major problem for the very superficial tillage, which in turn generated lower crop yields than conventional tillage. The main issues raised by this programme deal with the long-term effects of these techniques on soil fertility, and the improvement of conservation tillage techniques in organic farming.
En agriculture biologique (AB), le labour a plusieurs fonctions : préparation des semis, enfouissement des amendements organiques et contrôle des adventices. Cependant, les agriculteurs en AB s’intéressent aux techniques sans labour (TSL) dans la perspective de baisser leur coût de production tout en préservant leur sol. Des recherches menées en grandes cultures et maraîchage AB ont été développées dans différentes régions françaises à partir de sites expérimentaux et de réseaux de parcelles. L’objectif est d’évaluer l’impact des TSL en grandes cultures (travail superficiel à très superficiel sans retournement) et en maraîchage (planches permanentes) sur la fertilité du sol, le rendement des cultures et le contrôle des adventices. Dès les premières années d’adoption des TSL, on observe une prise en masse du sol, une augmentation du stock de carbone et des microorganismes dans les 0-15 cm. La biomasse lombricienne est plus importante en travail très superficiel qu'avec les autres techniques. La baisse du rendement n’est observée que pour un travail du sol très superficiel, et quelques situations de planches permanentes en raison du développement des adventices ou de problèmes d’implantation. Ainsi, peu de différences en termes d’adventices et de rendement sont mises en évidence entre le travail du sol superficiel (10-15 cm) et le labour en grandes cultures. Les travaux présentés étant récents, des interrogations demeurent sur l’impact des TSL en AB sur le long terme, et leur intérêt d’un point de vue économique, énergétique et environnemental.
Over the last decades, the surface traditionally ploughed has tended to decrease and replaced by shallow working tillage techniques without soil inversion, i.e., no tillage or reduced tillage with ...tines or discs. These techniques were mostly developed in conventional farming systems but nowadays they are also developed in organic farming systems. Nevertheless, these tillage techniques could generate crop nutrients deficiencies and a deterioration of soil structure, especially during the first years of their application. As the use of synthetic fertilizers is forbidden in organic farming, a decrease of the soil fertility could be very detrimental for crop growth. Indeed, soil micro-organisms are key contributors to the soil functioning in organic farming as nutrient supply is mainly dependent on the degradation of soil organic matter by their mineralization activity. The objective of this work was to study - during the first years of their application - the effects of different tillage techniques on soil structure, crop residues distribution and to evaluate their consequences on soil micro-organisms as well as their potential activity to mineralize organic carbon and nitrogen. To fulfill this objective, a particular sampling scheme was used, based on a morphological characterisation of soil structure. In each horizon delimited by the working depth of the successive tillage tools, we sampled different areas with distinct physical properties : compacted clods (Γ clods) without any visible structural porosity and loose clods with a clearly visible structural porosity (Δ clods). This sampling method enabled us to make connections between soil structure and soil microbial functioning, and to reveal the spatial organisation of soil micro-organisms at a macroscopic scale, quantitatively (soil microbial biomass and its activities of C and N mineralization) and qualitatively (soil microbial community structure). In this way, during the first years of treatments differentiation, quantity, activity and soil microbial community structure were modified : firstly, by crop residue distribution and secondly, by soil compaction within the horizons where substrates availability was not restricted. The integration of the spatial heterogeneities of soil structure enabled us to precise the effects of each tillage technique on the potential ability of soil micro-organisms to mineralize organic carbon and nitrogen. Thus, in the experimental conditions of this work, the application of a reduced tillage technique in organic farming doesn't reduce the potential of nitrogen mineralization in comparison with mouldboard ploughing during the first years of its application.
Depuis quelques décennies, le labour, comme mode de travail du sol, tend à diminuer au profit de différents modes de préparation du sol, allant du travail du sol réduit sans retournement jusqu'au semis direct. De tels modes alternatifs de travail du sol méritent une étude approfondie avant leur diffusion en agriculture biologique (AB) car ils peuvent occasionner des problèmes de nutrition des cultures et une dégradation de la structure du sol au cours des premières années de leur application. L'objectif de ce travail a donc été d'étudier les modifications que génèrent l'adoption de différentes techniques de travail du sol en AB sur la structure du sol, la répartition des résidus de culture et des microorganismes au sein du profil cultural, puis d'en évaluer les conséquences sur la minéralisation potentielle du carbone et de l'azote. Pour cela, le travail s’est appuyé sur deux dispositifs agronomiques mis en place l’un sur sol alluvial sableux (Lyon), l’autre sur sol limoneux de Bretagne (Kerguéhennec) pour comparer les effets de quatre modes de travail du sol : labour traditionnel, labour "agronomique", travail réduit et superficiel. Dans chacun de ces sites, des prélèvements ont été réalisés à partir de l'observation des profils culturaux au sein de zones compactées (mottes Γ) et non compactées (mottes Δ) à différentes profondeurs correspondant aux limites de travail des outils étudiés. Cette stratégie d'échantillonnage a permis de relier la structure du sol au fonctionnement microbien et de mieux comprendre les facteurs qui gouvernent l'organisation spatiale des microorganismes à une échelle macroscopique et ce, aussi bien d'un point de vue quantitatif (biomasse microbienne, activités de minéralisation) que qualitatif (structure des communautés microbiennes). Ainsi, dès les premières années de différenciation des traitements, la quantité, l'activité mais aussi la structure des communautés microbiennes sont influencées par la profondeur et le mode d'enfouissement des résidus puis, dans les horizons où la quantité de substrat disponible n'est pas limitante, par le tassement du sol généré par chaque technique. La prise en compte de l'hétérogénéité spatiale de la structure du sol permet de préciser l'effet de chaque technique étudiée sur le potentiel de minéralisation du carbone et d'azote des microorganismes. Ainsi, dans les conditions expérimentales de ce travail, il apparaît que l'adoption de techniques de travail du sol réduit ou superficiel ne limite pas le potentiel d'azote minéralisable total (sur l'ensemble de la couche de sol) par rapport au labour au cours des premières années de leur application.
In agricultural field, the environmental conditions of soil micro-organisms and their ability to degrade soil organic matter and release nitrogen are strongly modified by the type of tillage. We ...studied the influence of 4 tillage systems in organic farming on the soil microbial biomass and itspotential activities of C and N mineralization. In order to connect soil structure resulting from these tillage systems with the soil microbial biomass and to extrapolate microbial measurements at the field scale, we adopted a particular sampling scheme based on the morphological characterisation of the soil structure by description of soil profiles. We sampled in three layers (0-7, 7-15 and 15-30 cm) clods with distinct physical characteristics: porous clods with visible porosity (tau clods) and compacted clods without visible porosity (delta clods). On each clod we measured distinct physico-chemical (C and N content, C/N, pH and total porosity) and microbiological characteristics (soil microbial biomass SMB, C and Nmin). This sampling method revealed the influence of soil structure and organic matter repartition on SMB and its activity and allowed a more precise assessment of tillage managements on the soil microbial functioning during the transition period from ploughing to no ploughing.
