This paper examines the causal relationships between carbon dioxide emissions, energy consumption and real economic output using panel cointegration and panel vector error correction modeling ...techniques based on the panel data for 28 provinces in China over the period 1995–2007. Our empirical results show that CO2 emissions, energy consumption and economic growth have appeared to be cointegrated. Moreover, there exists bidirectional causality between CO2 emissions and energy consumption, and also between energy consumption and economic growth. It has also been found that energy consumption and economic growth are the long-run causes for CO2 emissions and CO2 emissions and economic growth are the long-run causes for energy consumption. The results indicate that China's CO2 emissions will not decrease in a long period of time and reducing CO2 emissions may handicap China's economic growth to some degree. Some policy implications of the empirical results have finally been proposed.

Background
The aim of this study was to assess the immune profile within the microenvironment of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), and to investigate the prognostic value of intratumoral ...infiltrating immune/inflammatory cells (IICs) in patients after surgery.
Methods
Eighteen phenotypic markers representing 11 types of IIC and the protein products of genes TP53, CDKN2A/p16 and SMAD4/DPC4 were assessed by immunohistochemistry of specimens from patients with pancreatic cancer. The expression of IICs and the mutational status of the genes were correlated with tumour recurrence and survival, and results were validated in an independent cohort.
Results
CD15+ neutrophils, CD20+ B cells and CD206+ tumour‐associated macrophages were seen frequently in tumours, and their presence was associated with reduced survival in a cohort of 79 patients. Expression of CD4+ T helper cells, CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes and CD117+ mast cells was associated with a favourable prognosis. A weighted Cox regression recurrence‐predictive model was constructed that showed good correlation of IICs and gene mutations. A combination of CD15, CD206, CD117 and Smad4 expression was independently associated with overall (hazard ratio (HR) 3·63, 95 per cent c.i. 2·18 to 6·04; P < 0·001) and recurrence‐free (HR 2·93, 1·81 to 4·75; P < 0·001) survival. These findings were validated in an independent cohort (151 patients) and in 54 tissue samples obtained by preoperative endoscopic ultrasound‐guided fine‐needle aspiration.
Conclusion
PDAC has a unique immunosuppressive phenotype that is associated with characteristic gene mutations, disease recurrence and survival after pancreatectomy.
Surgical relevance
The immune microenvironment plays a critical role in the development of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). PDAC is associated with mutations in major driver genes, including KRAS, TP53, CDKN2A/p16 and SMAD4/DPC4.
This study shows that the microenvironment of PDAC has a unique immunosuppressive phenotype, which may be driven by oncogene mutations. Patients with PDAC with a highly immunosuppressive profile tended to have poor postoperative survival. A model including three intratumoral infiltrating immune markers (CD15+, CD206+ and CD117+) and a SMAD4 mutation can be used to predict recurrence and survival in patients after surgery for PDAC.

In order to assess the potential yield of MSPs, we conducted population simulations and found that both FAST and Parkes new phased array feed surveys, focusing on intermediate Galactic latitudes, have the capacity to uncover several hundred new MSPs.
We present a four-band and polarization-insensitive terahertz metamaterial absorber formed by four square metallic rings and a metallic ground plane separated by a dielectric layer. It is found that ...the structure has four distinctive absorption bands whose peaks are over 97% on average. The mechanism of the four-band absorber is attributed to the overlapping of four resonance frequencies, and the mechanism of the absorption is investigated by the distributions of the electric field. In particular, the frequency of each absorption peak can be flexibly controlled by varying the size of the corresponding metallic ring. The proposed concept is applicable to other types of absorber structures and can be readily scaled up to the structures that are working in the microwave frequency range. Moreover, the characteristic of the design can be used to design a five-band metamaterial absorber by adding one more metallic ring. The proposed absorber has potential applications in detection, imaging, and stealth technology.

h after accelerated cooling were studied. It was found that the martensite structure was gradually transformed into a superfine ferrite and austenite duplex structure by austenite reverted transformation during annealing process. The annealing heat treatment results in a large volume fraction of austenite (34%) and an excellent combination of ultimate tensile strength (∼1000
MPa) and total elongation (>40%) at room temperature. The ultrahigh tensile strength and improved ductility of present steel were mainly attributed to the enhanced phase transformation induced plasticity due to the large fractioned austenite.
