The study aimed to investigate the effect of early mobilization combined with early nutrition (EMN) on intensive care unit-acquired weakness (ICU-AW) in intensive care unit (ICU) settings compared ...with early mobilization (EM) or routine care.
A prospective, dual-center, randomized controlled trial was conducted. The control group underwent standard care without a pre-established routine for mobilization and nutrition. The EM group underwent early, individualized, progressive mobilization within 24 h of ICU admission. The EMN group underwent early mobilization, similar to the EM group plus guideline-based early nutrition (within 48 h of ICU admission). The primary outcome was the occurrence of ICU-AW at discharge from the ICU. Secondary outcomes included muscle strength, functional independence, organ failure, nutritional status, duration of mechanical ventilation (MV), length of ICU stay, and ICU mortality at ICU discharge.
A total of 150 patients were enrolled and equally distributed into the three groups. Patients undergoing routine care only were more susceptible to ICU-AW upon ICU discharge than those in the EM or EMN groups (16% vs. 2%; p = 0.014 for both), and had a lower Barthel Index than others (control vs. EM/EMN: 57.5 vs 70.0; p = 0.022). The EMN group had improved muscle strength (p = 0.028) and better nutritional status than the control group (p = 0.031). Both interventions were associated with a lower ICU-AW (EM vs. control: p = 0.027, OR 95% CI = 0.066 0.006-0.739; EMN vs. control: p = 0.016, OR 95% CI = 0.065 0.007-0.607).
EM and EMN had positive effects. There was little difference between the effects of EM and EMN, except for muscle strength improvement. Both EM and EMN may lead to a lower occurrence of ICU-AW and better functional independence than standard care. EMN might benefit nutritional status more than usual care and promote improvement in muscle strength.
The surface properties of carbon materials are very important since many complex physical and chemical reactions take place on their surfaces. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) test is one of ...the most significant characterization methods to analyze the surfaces. The carbon species and banding energies for several typical kinds of carbon materials (graphite, carbon black, graphene, carbon nanotubes, carbides, and polymers) were summarized with typical XPS spectra. It can be found that carbon materials with different preparation methods, analytical methods or storage times possess quite different carbon species and banding energies. Meanwhile, classical XPS figures and analysis results of every carbon material were illustrated, which provides the researchers an intuitive understanding of the related analytical method. Therefore, much more accurate results of XPS spectra for related carbon materials can be obtained.
Platinum-based anticancer drugs are the mainstay of chemotherapy regimens in clinic. Nevertheless, the efficacy of platinum drugs is badly affected by serious systemic toxicities and drug resistance, ...and the pharmacokinetics of most platinum drugs is largely unknown. In recent years, a keen interest in functionalizing platinum complexes with bioactive molecules, targeting groups, photosensitizers, fluorophores, or nanomaterials has been sparked among chemical and biomedical researchers. The motivation for functionalization comes from some of the following demands: to improve the tumor selectivity or minimize the systemic toxicity of the drugs, to enhance the cellular accumulation of the drugs, to overcome the tumor resistance to the drugs, to visualize the drug molecules in vitro or in vivo, to achieve a synergistic anticancer effect between different therapeutic modalities, or to add extra functionality to the drugs. In this Account, we present different strategies being used for functionalizing platinum complexes, including conjugation with bisphosphonates, peptides, receptor-specific ligands, polymers, nanoparticles, magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents, metal chelators, or photosensitizers. Among them, bisphosphonates, peptides, and receptor-specific ligands are used for actively targeted drug delivery, polymers and nanoparticles are for passively targeted drug delivery, magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents are for theranostic purposes, metal chelators are for the treatment or prevention of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and photosensitizers are for photodynamic therapy of cancers. The rationales behind these designs are explained and justified at the molecular or cellular level, associating with the requirements for diagnosis, therapy, and visualization of biological processes. To illustrate the wide range of opportunities and challenges that are emerging in this realm, representative examples of targeted drug delivery systems, anticancer conjugates, anticancer theranostic agents, and anti-AD compounds relevant to functionalized platinum complexes are provided. All the examples exhibit new potential of platinum complexes for future applications in biomedical areas. The emphases of this Account are placed on the functionalization for targeted drug delivery and theranostic agents. In the end, a general assessment of various strategies has been made according to their major shortcomings and defects. The original information in this Account comes entirely from literature appearing since 2010.
In this paper, after analyzing the existing independent component analysis algorithms, the high-dimensional high-frequency data are preprocessed by whitening, and the objective functions of crag, ...negative entropy, approximate negative entropy, and mutual information are set. The independent component analysis model is designed to separate the independence between signals by maximizing non-Gaussianity, estimating great likelihood, and minimizing mutual information measures. In order to verify that the dimensionality reduction technique based on independent component analysis can effectively extract high-dimensional, high-frequency data information, it is applied to the industry’s closing index data and financial market data. The results show that the stock price synthesized using the six major independent factors is almost the same as the original stock price trend of DG, and the difference in stock price evaluation is within 5, indicating that the six major independent factors play a decisive role in the stock price trend. The study shows that the dimensionality reduction technique based on independent component analysis can analyze the volatility of stock prices and obtain more effective information from high-dimensional, high-frequency data.
The hierarchical martensitic features in ultra-high strength stainless steel (UHSSS), including the prior austenite grains, martensite packets, blocks and laths with the descending size, were refined ...to various extents by employing different thermomechanical processes and then carefully characterized. Their relation to yield strength and impact toughness was analyzed. We conclude that the refinement of martensitic structures could lead to the significant increase of yield strength, which follows the Hall-Petch relation with the effect grain size defined by high angle boundaries (HABs). Impact toughness of UHSSS depends on the frequency and capability for retained austenite (RA) grains at both HABs and martensite lath boundaries to trap the propagating cracks via strain-induced transformation, in which the film-like RA grains at lath boundaries appear to make the greater contribution.
Although atmospheric microplastics have been found to be ubiquitous even on untraversed mountains and have potential impacts on human health, little information concerning their sampling methodology ...and transport is currently available. Until a realistic quantification of suspended atmospheric microplastics (SAMPs) is obtained, however, any potential health risk assessment for this pollutant will be open to criticism for using an ambiguous dataset. To address this knowledge gap, in May 2019 a trial experiment was performed to explore the potential relationship between sampling volume and SAMP abundance. A significant logarithmic regression between SAMP abundance and the sampling volume of filtrated air was found and the sufficient volume of filtrated air for accurate SAMP quantification was recommended. Investigation results indicated that fibrous and fragment-shaped SAMPs comprised 91% of all of the identified synthetic particles. Interestingly, for the first time, plastic microbeads were also observed in the collected air, constituting 9% of the all of the SAMPs by quantity. Spectral analysis revealed that these SAMPs consisted of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), epoxy resin (EP), polyethylene (PE), alkyd resin (ALK), rayon (RY), polypropylene (PP), polyamide (PA), and polystyrene (PS). PET, EP, PE, and ALK constituted the majority (90%) of all of the polymer types, with quantitative percentages of 51%, 19%, 12%, and 8%, respectively. Based on our numerical modeling simulation, the approximate transport flux of SAMPs during June in Shanghai was estimated, ranging from 9.94 × 104 n/(m·d) to 6.52 × 105 n/(m·d), with a mean of 3.00 ± 1.58 × 105 n/(m·d). The goal of our study was to provide an essential methodological aid for the accurate determination of SAMPs in the environment and a better understanding of terrestrial microplastic transport in megacities.
•A stable sampling methodology for SAMPs was presented and verified.•The proper volume of filtrated air for accurate SAMP quantification was recommended.•The transport flux of SAMPs was roughly estimated in the megacity of Shanghai.

In this study, 454-pyrosequencing technology was employed to investigate the microbial communities in 12 municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWPTs) with different treatment processes. In total, 202,968 effective sequences of the 16S rRNA gene were generated from 16 samples that widely represented the diversity of the microbial communities. While Proteobacteria was found to be the dominant phylum in some samples, in other samples it was Bacteroidetes. The Simpson’s diversity index and evenness index were lowest in samples from membrane bioreactors (MBRs), possibly due to the long sludge retention time (SRT) and low food/microorganism ratio (F/M). For one WWTP which had two disparate treatment processes operating in parallel, the structures of microbial communities in the two systems were compared. The differences found between the two indicated that the treatment process likely had effects on the structure of microbial communities.
The role of rivers as a major transport pathway for all sizes of plastic debris into the ocean is widely recognized. Global modelling studies ranked the Changjiang River as the largest contributor of ...plastic waste to the marine environment, but these estimates were based on insufficient empirical data. To better understand the role of rivers in delivering terrestrial plastic debris to the ocean, the spatial and temporal patterns of microplastics (MP) in the Changjiang Estuary (CE) and the East China Sea (ECS) were studied based on surface water samples in February, May, and July 2017. A total of 3225 MP (60–5000 μm) were identified by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry. MP abundance in July was higher than in February and May due to higher river discharge. Density stratification in CE significantly influenced the surface MP abundances. A temporal accumulation zone within the river-sea interface for plastics was indicated by stations with apparently higher abundances in the river plume. Fibers were the most common MP (>80%) over three months. Small MP (<1000 μm) composed 75.0% of the total plastics on average. The average mass of MP was 0.000033 g/particle, which was two orders of magnitude lower than the empirical mass in literature. Without considering tidal effects, we estimate 16–20 trillion MP particles, weighing 537.6–905.9 tons, entered the sea through the surface water layer of the Changjiang River in 2017. These findings of this study provide reliable information on MP waste in a large river, which should be considered in further studies for estimating the riverine plastic loads.

A side‐chain conjugation strategy in the design of nonfullerene electron acceptors is proposed, with the design and synthesis of a side‐chain‐conjugated acceptor (ITIC2) based on a ...4,8‐bis(5‐(2‐ethylhexyl)thiophen‐2‐yl)benzo1,2‐b:4,5‐b′di(cyclopenta‐dithiophene) electron‐donating core and 1,1‐dicyanomethylene‐3‐indanone electron‐withdrawing end groups. ITIC2 with the conjugated side chains exhibits an absorption peak at 714 nm, which redshifts 12 nm relative to ITIC1. The absorption extinction coefficient of ITIC2 is 2.7 × 105m−1 cm−1, higher than that of ITIC1 (1.5 × 105m−1 cm−1). ITIC2 exhibits slightly higher highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) (−5.43 eV) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) (−3.80 eV) energy levels relative to ITIC1 (HOMO: −5.48 eV; LUMO: −3.84 eV), and higher electron mobility (1.3 × 10−3 cm2 V−1 s−1) than that of ITIC1 (9.6 × 10−4 cm2 V−1 s−1). The power conversion efficiency of ITIC2‐based organic solar cells is 11.0%, much higher than that of ITIC1‐based control devices (8.54%). Our results demonstrate that side‐chain conjugation can tune energy levels, enhance absorption, and electron mobility, and finally enhance photovoltaic performance of nonfullerene acceptors.
A side‐chain conjugation strategy in the design of nonfullerene electron acceptors is proposed and the first example of a side‐chain‐conjugated fused‐ring electron acceptor is presented. Polymer solar cells based on side‐chain‐conjugated ITIC2 show a champion power conversion efficiency of 11.0%, much higher than its counterpart ITIC1‐based devices (8.54%).
Nanomaterials based on chitosan have emerged as promising carriers of therapeutic agents for drug delivery due to good biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low toxicity. Chitosan originated ...nanocarriers have been prepared by mini-emulsion, chemical or ionic gelation, coacervation/precipitation, and spray-drying methods. As alternatives to these traditional fabrication methods, self-assembled chitosan nanomaterials show significant advantages and have received growing scientific attention in recent years. Self-assembly is a spontaneous process by which organized structures with particular functions and properties could be obtained without additional complicated processing or modification steps. In this review, we focus on recent progress in the design, fabrication and physicochemical aspects of chitosan-based self-assembled nanomaterials. Their applications in drug delivery of different therapeutic agents are also discussed in details.
