Ferulic acid, a kind of phenolic substance widely existing in plants, is an important active component of many traditional Chinese medicines. So far, it has been proved that ferulic acid has a ...variety of biological activities, especially in oxidative stress, inflammation, vascular endothelial injury, fibrosis, apoptosis and platelet aggregation. Many studies have shown that ferulic acid can inhibit PI3K/AKT pathway, the production of ROS and the activity of aldose reductase. The anti-inflammatory effect of ferulic acid is mainly related to the levels of PPAR γ, CAM and NF-κ B and p38 MAPK signaling pathways. Ferulic acid not only protects vascular endothelium by ERK1/2 and NO/ET-1 signal, but also plays an anti-fibrosis role by TGF-β/Smad and MMPs/TIMPs system. Moreover, ferulic acid has ant-apoptotic and anti-platelet effects. In addition to the pharmacological effects of ferulic acid, its pharmacokinetics and derivatives were also discussed in this paper. This review provides the latest summary of the latest research on ferulic acid.

Recently, with the emergence of new light sources, polarization devices, and detectors, together with a prominent increase in data processing capability, polarization techniques find more and more ...applications in various areas, one of which is biomedicine. For probing the characteristic features of complex biomedical specimen, Mueller matrix polarimetry has demonstrated distinctive advantages. Mueller matrix polarimetry can be achieved on other optical techniques by adding the polarization state generator and analyzer to their existing optical paths appropriately. Common biomedical optical equipment, such as microscopes and endoscopes, can be upgraded to fulfill Mueller matrix imaging and measurement abilities. Compared with traditional non-polarization optical methods, Mueller matrix polarimetry can provide far more information to characterize the samples, including the anisotropic optical properties, such as birefringence and diattenuation, as well as the distinctive features of various scattering particles and microstructures. Also, Mueller matrix polarimetry is more sensitive to scattering by sub-wavelength microstructures. As a label-free and non-invasive tool, Mueller matrix polarimetry has broad application prospects in biomedical studies and clinical diagnosis. In this review, we provide an introduction to the Mueller matrix methodology, including the Stokes-Mueller formalism, and also the decomposition and transformation methods to derive new parameters. We also summarize the status of the Mueller matrix polarimetric field, including recent improvements, both in instrumentation and data analysis. The current and future applications of Mueller matrix polarimetry in biomedicine are provided and discussed.
This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of water temperature (WT) and dietary protein levels on growth, body composition and blood biochemistry of GIFT tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus; ...initial average body weight: 38.75 ± 0.61g, n = 20). The fish were fed with six diets contained graded levels of protein (209.6, 251.0, 302.4, 354.3, 401.9 and 456.8 g/kg) and raised in each of WT (22°C, 28°C and 34°C) for 8 weeks. Results showed that the growth, feed utilization and protein efficiency were significantly increased with the increase of dietary protein level and followed by the latter platform at each WT. The fish raised at 28 and 34°C showed similar growth performance, and their values were significantly higher than the fish raised at 22°C (p < 0.05). The lipid contents in whole body were decreases with the increase of dietary protein level at each WT. However, the whole‐body protein, ash and moisture contents were not affected by dietary protein level or WT (p > 0.05). The values of serum biochemical indices (ALP, ALT, AST and TCHO) were all decreased with the increase of dietary protein. The optimal dietary protein requirement for GIFT tilapia to achieve maximal growth performance is 374.4, 301.7 and 304.9 g protein/kg diet at 22, 28 and 34°C, respectively.

Camellia oleifera Abel, known as edible-oil tree, is a subtropical evergreen shrub or small tree and distributed in China and South-East Asian countries with high nutritional and medicinal values. Approximately 249 ingredients have been isolated and structurally identified from different parts of C. oleifera. Among them, triterpenoid saponins, flavonoids, polyphenols, and polysaccharides are major bioactive constituents. Pharmacological studies revealed that this plant of homology of medicine and food and its extracts or compounds possess extensive beneficial health properties both in vivo and in vitro. However, C. oleifera seed cakes, as a by-product after squeezing the oil in C. oleifera seed, have not been fully considered as potential functional food ingredients to exploit foods with promising health benefits. This paper presents a comprehensive and systematic overview about the nutritional and phytochemical compositions, pharmacological properties, and industrial applications of C. oleifera, which will provide the latest information for further exploitation and applications of C. oleifera in functional food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries.
Commercially available virtual reality (VR) exercise systems are extensively used in many health domains among clinical populations. However, evidence regarding the efficacy of this technology on ...healthy adults' health-related outcomes is unknown. This pilot study compared physiological and psychological responses following exercise on a VR-based exercise bike (VirZoom) and traditional stationary exercise bike. = 22.84, SD = ± 3.68) completed two separate 20-minute exercise sessions on the VR-based exercise bike and traditional stationary exercise bike. Blood pressure (BP), ratings of perceived exertion, self-efficacy, and enjoyment were assessed as primary outcomes. Dependent t-tests indicated no significant differences in mean systolic or diastolic BP changes from pre to postexercise between the VR-based exercise and traditional stationary biking sessions (all p > 0.05). Notably, participants reported significantly higher ratings of perceived exertion (p < 0.05, Cohen's d = 0.68) during the traditional exercise biking session compared with VR-based exercise biking session. However, participants had significantly higher self-efficacy (p < 0.05, Cohen's d = -0.83) and enjoyment (p < 0.05, Cohen's d = -0.89) during the VR-based exercise biking session compared with traditional stationary biking. The commercially available VR-based exercise bike (VirZoom) may be considered an effective, enjoyable, and motivating physical activity tool. Further interventions with larger and more diverse samples and examinations of more health-related outcomes are warranted to determine optimal application of VR-based exercise programming among various populations.
Objective. This study synthesized literature concerning casual evidence of effects of various physical activity programs on motor skills and cognitive development in typically developed preschool ...children. Methods. Electronic databases were searched through July 2017. Peer-reviewed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining the effectiveness of physical activity on motor skills and cognitive development in healthy young children (4–6 years) were screened. Results. A total of 15 RCTs were included. Of the 10 studies assessing the effects of physical activity on motor skills, eight (80%) reported significant improvements in motor performance and one observed mixed findings, but one failed to promote any beneficial outcomes. Of the five studies investigating the influence of physical activity on cognitive development, four (80%) showed significant and positive changes in language learning, academic achievement, attention, and working memory. Notably, one indicated no significant improvements were observed after the intervention. Conclusions. Findings support causal evidence of effects of physical activity on both motor skills and cognitive development in preschool children. Given the shortage of available studies, future research with large representative samples is warranted to explore the relationships between physical activity and cognitive domains as well as strengthen and confirm the dose-response evidence in early childhood.
Insomnia is a major health challenge in the general population, but the results of the gender differences in the epidemiology of insomnia have been mixed. This is a meta-analysis to examine the ...gender difference in the prevalence of insomnia among the general population.
Two reviewers independently searched relevant publications in PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Web of Science from their inception to 16 April 2019. Studies that reported the gender-based prevalence of insomnia according to the international diagnostic criteria were included for analyses using the random-effects model.
Eventually 13 articles were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of insomnia in the general population was 22.0%
= 22,980, 95% confidence interval (CI): 17.0-28.0%, and females had a significantly higher prevalence of insomnia compared with males (OR = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.35, 1.85,
= 5.63,
< 0.0001). Subgroup analyses showed that greater gender difference was associated with the use of case-control study design and consecutive sampling method. Meta-regression analyses also revealed that higher proportion of females and better study quality were significantly associated with greater gender difference.
This meta-analysis found that the prevalence of insomnia in females was significantly higher than males in the included studies. Due to the negative effects of insomnia on health, regular screening, and effective interventions should be implemented in the general population particularly for females.
Background:
In this study, we investigated the in vitro and in vivo chondrogenic capacity of kartogenin (KGN)–enhanced bone marrow–derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) for cartilage regeneration.
...Purpose:
To determine (1) whether functionalized nanographene oxide (NGO) can effectively deliver KGN into BMSCs and (2) whether KGN would enhance BMSCs during chondrogenesis in vitro and in vivo in an animal model.
Study Design:
Controlled laboratory study.
Methods:
Functionalized NGO with line chain amine-terminated polyethylene glycol (PEG) and branched polyethylenimine (BPEI) were used to synthesize biocompatible NGO-PEG-BPEI (PPG) and for loading hydrophobic KGN molecules noncovalently via π–π stacking and hydrophobic interactions (PPG-KGN). Then, PPG-KGN was used for the intracellular delivery of hydrophobic KGN by simple mixing and co-incubation with BMSCs to acquire KGN-enhanced BMSCs. The chondrogenic efficacy of KGN-enhanced BMSCs was evaluated in vitro. In vivo, osteoarthritis (OA) was induced by anterior cruciate ligament transection in rats. A total of 5 groups were established: normal (OA treated with nothing), phosphate-buffered saline (PBS; intra-articular injection of PBS), PPG-KGN (intra-articular injection of PPG-KGN), BMSCs (intra-articular injection of BMSCs), and BMSCs + PPG-KGN (intra-articular injection of PPG-KGN–preconditioned BMSCs). At 6 and 9 weeks after the surgical induction of OA, the rats received intra-articular injections of PPG-KGN, BMSCs, or KGN-enhanced BMSCs. At 14 weeks after the surgical induction of OA, radiographic and behavioral evaluations as well as histological analysis of the knee joints were performed.
Results:
The in vitro study showed that PPG could be rapidly uptaken in the first 4 hours after incubation, reaching saturation at 12 hours and accumulating in the lysosome and cytoplasm of BMSCs. Thus, PPG-KGN could enhance the efficiency of the intracellular delivery of KGN, which showed a remarkably high chondrogenic differentiation capacity of BMSCs. When applied to an OA model of cartilage injuries in rats, PPG-KGN–preconditioned BMSCs contributed to protection from joint space narrowing, pathological mineralization, OA development, and OA-induced pain, as well as improved tissue regeneration, as evidenced by radiographic, weightbearing, and histological findings.
Conclusion:
Our results demonstrate that KGN-enhanced BMSCs showed markedly improved capacities for chondrogenesis and articular cartilage repair. We believe that this work demonstrates that a multifunctional nanoparticle-based drug delivery system could be beneficial for stem cell therapy. Our results present an opportunity to reverse the symptoms and pathophysiology of OA.
Clinical Relevance:
The intracellular delivery of KGN to produce BMSCs with enhanced chondrogenic potential may offer a new approach for the treatment of OA.
Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common primary malignant bone tumor occurring in children and young adults. Drug-resistant osteosarcoma often results in chemotherapy failure. Therefore, new treatments ...aimed at novel therapeutic targets are urgently needed for the treatment of drug-resistant osteosarcoma. Mitochondria-targeted phototherapy, i.e., synergistic photodynamic/photothermal therapy, has emerged as a highly promising strategy for treating drug-resistant tumors. This study proposed a new nano-drug delivery system based on near-infrared imaging and multifunctional graphene, which can target mitochondria and show synergistic phototherapy, with preferential accumulation in tumors.
Based on our previous study, (4-carboxybutyl) triphenyl phosphonium bromide (TPP), a mitochondria-targeting ligand, was conjugated to indocyanine green (ICG)-loaded, polyethylenimine-modified PEGylated nanographene oxide sheets (TPP-PPG@ICG) to promote mitochondrial accumulation after cellular internalization. Thereafter, exposure to a single dose of near-infrared irradiation enabled synergistic photodynamic and photothermal therapy, which simultaneously inhibited adenosine triphosphate synthesis and mitochondrial function. Induction of intrinsic apoptosis assisted in surmounting drug resistance and caused tumor cell death. After fluorescence imaging-guided synergistic phototherapy, the mitochondria-targeting, multifunctional graphene-based, drug-delivery system showed highly selective anticancer efficiency in vitro and in vivo, resulting in marked inhibition of tumor progression without noticeable toxicity in mice bearing doxorubicin-resistant MG63 tumor cells.
The mitochondria-targeting TPP-PPG@ICG nanocomposite constitutes a new class of nanomedicine for fluorescence imaging-guided synergistic phototherapy and shows promise for treating drug-resistant osteosarcoma.
