To explore the characteristics of Helicobacter pylori resistance in China and the association between antibiotic resistance and several clinical factors.
H. pylori strains were collected from ...patients in 13 provinces or cities in China between 2010 and 2016. Demographic data including type of disease, geographic area, age, gender and isolation year were collected to analyse their association with antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance was detected using the Etest test and the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method.
H. pylori were successfully cultured from 1117 patients. The prevalence of metronidazole, clarithromycin (CLA), azithromycin, levofloxacin (LEV), moxifloxacin, amoxicillin (AMO), tetracycline and rifampicin resistance was 78.2, 22.1, 23.3, 19.2, 17.2, 3.4, 1.9 and 1.5%, respectively. No resistance to furazolidone was observed. The resistance rates to LEV and moxifloxacin were higher in strains isolated from patients with gastritis compared to those with duodenal ulcer and among women. Compared to patients ≥40 years old, younger patients exhibited lower resistance rates to CLA, azithromycin, LEV and moxifloxacin. The resistance rates to CLA and AMO were higher in strains isolated more recently, and we also found that the prevalence of resistance to metronidazole, CLA, azithromycin and AMO were significantly different among different regions of China.
The resistance rates to metronidazole, CLA and LEV were high in China. Patient age, gender, disease and location were associated with the resistance of H. pylori to some antibiotics. Furazolidone, AMO and tetracycline are better choices for H. pylori treatment in China.
H5N1 avian influenza virus (AIV) has emerged as a pathogenic entity for a variety of species, including humans, in recent years. Here we report an outbreak among migratory birds on Lake Qinghaihu, ...China, in May and June 2005, in which more than a thousand birds were affected. Pancreatic necrosis and abnormal neurological symptoms were the major clinical features. Sequencing of the complete genomes of four H5N1 AIV strains revealed them to be reassortants related to a peregrine falcon isolate from Hong Kong and to have known highly pathogenic characteristics. Experimental animal infections reproduced typical highly pathogenic AIV infection symptoms and pathology.
With the aim of gathering temporal trends on bacterial epidemiology and resistance from multiple laboratories in China, the CHINET surveillance system was organized in 2005. Antimicrobial ...susceptibility testing was carried out according to a unified protocol using the Kirby-Bauer method or automated systems. Results were analyzed according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) 2014 definitions. Between 2005 and 2014, the number of bacterial isolates ranged between 22 774 and 84 572 annually. Rates of extended-spectrum β-lactamase production among Escherichia coli isolates were stable, between 51.7 and 55.8%. Resistance of E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae to amikacin, ciprofloxacin, piperacillin/tazobactam and cefoperazone/sulbactam decreased with time. Carbapenem resistance among K. pneumoniae isolates increased from 2.4 to 13.4%. Resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains against all of antimicrobial agents tested including imipenem and meropenem decreased with time. On the contrary, resistance of Acinetobacter baumannii strains to carbapenems increased from 31 to 66.7%. A marked decrease of methicillin resistance from 69% in 2005 to 44.6% in 2014 was observed for Staphylococcus aureus. Carbapenem resistance rates in K. pneumoniae and A. baumannii in China are high. Our results indicate the importance of bacterial surveillance studies.
We discuss results of a superposed epoch analysis of dipolarization fronts, rapid (δt < 30 s), high‐amplitude (δBz > 10 nT) increases in the northward magnetic field component, observed during six ...Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) conjunction events. All six fronts propagated earthward; time delays at multiple probes were used to determine their propagation velocity. We define typical magnetic and electric field and plasma parameter variations during dipolarization front crossings and estimate their characteristic gradient scales. The study reveals (1) a rapid 50% decrease in plasma density and ion pressure, (2) a factor of 2–3 increase in high‐energy (30–200 keV) electron flux and electron temperature, and (3) transient enhancements of ∼5 mV/m in duskward and earthward electric field components. Gradient scales of magnetic field, plasma density, and particle flux were found to be comparable to the ion thermal gyroradius. Current densities associated with the Bz increase are, on average, 20 nA/m2, 5–7 times larger than the current density in the cross‐tail current sheet. Because j · E > 0, the dipolarization fronts are kinetic‐scale dissipative regions with Joule heating rates of 10% of the total bursty bulk flow energy.
Key Points
Superposed epoch analysis of THEMIS dipolarization front events
Common pattern in field and particle variations during front crossings
Particle energization and energetic plasma transport
The edible mushroom Termitomyces is an agaric‐type basidiomycete fungus that has a symbiotic relationship with fungus‐growing termites. An understanding of the detailed development mechanisms ...underlying the adaptive responses of Termitomyces sp. to their growing environment is lacking. Here, we compared the transcriptome sequences of different Termitomyces sp. samples and link‐stipe grown on fungus combs in situ and monocultured in vitro. The assembled reads generated 8052 unigenes. The expression profiles were highly different for 2556 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) of the treated samples, where the expression of 1312 and 1244 DEGs was upregulated in the Mycelium and link‐stipe groups respectively. Functional classification of the DEGs based on both Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes enrichment analysis revealed an expected shift in fungal gene expression, where stress response genes whose expression was upregulated in link‐stipe may adaptively be involved in cell wall hydrolysis and fusion, pathogenesis, oxidation‐reduction, transporter efflux, transposon efflux and self/non–self‐recognition. Urease has implications in the expression of genes involved in the nitrogen metabolism pathway, and its expression could be controlled by low‐level nitrogen fixation of fungus combs. In addition, the expression patterns of eleven select genes on the basis of qRT‐PCR were consistent with their changes in transcript abundance, as revealed by RNA sequencing. Taken together, these findings may be useful for enriching the knowledge concerning the Termitomyces adaptive response to in situ fungus combs compared with the response of monocultures in vitro.
Significance and Impact of the Study: The first study of the gene regulation from transcriptome can provide a theoretical basis for the subsequent further excavation of key developmental functional genes of Termitomyces sp. We found an important but not yet biologically defined Termitomyces tissue, link‐stipe. There are a lot of important developmental genes and stress response genes in the link‐stipe tissue, which can provide an important reference to analyse the development mechanism of Termitomyces sp. The important cohesion of link‐stipe tissue in the whole symbiotic system is demonstrated.
In this work, we report the design of topological filter and all-optical logic gates based on two-dimensional photonic crystals with robust edge states. All major logic gates, including OR, AND, NOT, ...NOR, XOR, XNOR, and NAND, are suitably designed by using the linear interference approach. Moreover, numerical simulations show that our designed all-optical logic devices can always work well even if significant disorders exist. It is expected that such robust and compact logic devices have potential applications in future photonic integrated circuits.
