The current COVID-19 public health crisis, caused by SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2), has produced a devastating toll both in terms of human life loss and economic ...disruption. In this paper we present a machine-learning algorithm capable of identifying whether a given patient (actually infected or suspected to be infected) is more likely to survive than to die, or vice-versa. We train this algorithm with historical data, including medical history, demographic data, as well as COVID-19-related information. This is extracted from a database of confirmed and suspected COVID-19 infections in Mexico, constituting the official COVID-19 data compiled and made publicly available by the Mexican Federal Government. We demonstrate that the proposed method can detect high-risk patients with high accuracy, in each of four identified clinical stages, thus improving hospital capacity planning and timely treatment. Furthermore, we show that our method can be extended to provide optimal estimators for hypothesis-testing techniques commonly-used in biological and medical statistics. We believe that our work could be of use in the context of the current pandemic in assisting medical professionals with real-time assessments so as to determine health care priorities.
Context. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) provide information about the surface composition of about 100 000 minor planets. The resulting visible ...colors and albedos enabled us to group them in several major classes, which are a simplified view of the diversity shown by the few existing spectra. A large set of data in the 0.8−2.5 μm, where wide spectral features are expected, is required to refine and complement the global picture of these small bodies of the solar system. Aims. We aim to obtain the near-infrared colors for a large sample of solar system objects using the observations made during the VISTA-VHS survey. Methods. We performed a serendipitous search in VISTA-VHS observations using a pipeline developed to retrieve and process the data that corresponds to solar system objects (SSo). The resulting photometric data is analyzed using color−color plots and by comparison with the known spectral properties of asteroids. Results. The colors and the magnitudes of the minor planets observed by the VISTA survey are compiled into three catalogs that are available online: the detections catalog (MOVIS-D), the magnitudes catalog (MOVIS-M), and the colors catalog (MOVIS-C). They were built using the third data release of the survey (VISTA VHS-DR3). A total of 39 947 objects were detected, including 52 NEAs, 325 Mars Crossers, 515 Hungaria asteroids, 38 428 main-belt asteroids, 146 Cybele asteroids, 147 Hilda asteroids, 270 Trojans, 13 comets, 12 Kuiper Belt objects and Neptune with its four satellites. The colors found for asteroids with known spectral properties reveal well-defined patterns corresponding to different mineralogies. The distributions of MOVIS-C data in color−color plots shows clusters identified with different taxonomic types. All the diagrams that use (Y − J) color separate the spectral classes more effectively than the (J − H) and (H − Ks) plots used until now: even for large color errors (<0.1), the plots (Y − J) vs. (Y − Ks) and (Y − J) vs. (J − Ks) provide the separation between S-complex and C-complex. The end members A, D, R, and V-types occupy well-defined regions.
Whole mitochondrial genomes are quickly becoming markers of choice for the exploration of within-species genealogical and among-species phylogenetic relationships. Most often, 'primer walking' or ...'long PCR' strategies plus Sanger sequencing or low-pass whole genome sequencing using Illumina short reads are used for the assembling of mitochondrial chromosomes. In this study, we first confirmed that mitochondrial genomes can be sequenced from long reads using nanopore sequencing data exclusively. Next, we examined the accuracy of the long-reads assembled mitochondrial chromosomes when comparing them to a 'gold' standard reference mitochondrial chromosome assembled using Illumina short-reads sequencing.
Using a specialized bioinformatics tool, we first produced a short-reads mitochondrial genome assembly for the silky shark C. falciformis with an average base coverage of 9.8x. The complete mitochondrial genome of C. falciformis was 16,705 bp in length and 934 bp shorter than a previously assembled genome (17,639 bp in length) that used bioinformatics tools not specialized for the assembly of mitochondrial chromosomes. Next, low-pass whole genome sequencing using a MinION ONT pocket-sized platform plus customized de-novo and reference-based workflows assembled and circularized a highly accurate mitochondrial genome in the silky shark Carcharhinus falciformis. Indels at the flanks of homopolymer regions explained most of the dissimilarities observed between the 'gold' standard reference mitochondrial genome (assembled using Illumina short reads) and each of the long-reads mitochondrial genome assemblies. Although not completely accurate, mitophylogenomics and barcoding analyses (using entire mitogenomes and the D-Loop/Control Region, respectively) suggest that long-reads assembled mitochondrial genomes are reliable for identifying a sequenced individual, such as C. falciformis, and separating the same individual from others belonging to closely related congeneric species.
This study confirms that mitochondrial genomes can be sequenced from long-reads nanopore sequencing data exclusively. With further development, nanopore technology can be used to quickly test in situ mislabeling in the shark fin fishing industry and thus, improve surveillance protocols, law enforcement, and the regulation of this fishery. This study will also assist with the transferring of high-throughput sequencing technology to middle- and low-income countries so that international scientists can explore population genomics in sharks using inclusive research strategies. Lastly, we recommend assembling mitochondrial genomes using specialized assemblers instead of other assemblers developed for bacterial and/or nuclear genomes.
Context. The MOVIS catalog contains the largest set of near-infrared (NIR) colors for solar system objects. These data were obtained from the observations performed by VISTA-VHS survey using the Y, ...J, H, and Ks filters. The taxonomic classification of objects in this catalog allows us to obtain large-scale distributions for the asteroidal population, to study faint objects, and to select targets for detailed spectral investigations. Aims. We aim to provide a taxonomic classification for asteroids observed by VISTA-VHS survey. We derive a method for assigning a compositional type to an object based on its (Y − J), (J − Ks), and (H − Ks) colors. Methods. We present a taxonomic classification for 18 265 asteroids from the MOVIS catalog, using a probabilistic method and the k-nearest neighbors algorithm. Because our taxonomy is based only on NIR colors, several classes from Bus-DeMeo were clustered into groups and a slightly different notation was used: i.e., the superscript indicates that the classification was obtained based on the NIR colors and the subscript indicates possible misidentifications with other types. Our results are compared with the information provided by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). Results. The two algorithms used in this study give a taxonomic type for all objects having at least (Y − J) and (J − Ks) observed colors. A final classification is reported for a set of 6496 asteroids based on the criteria that kNN and probabilistic algorithms gave the same result, and the color errors are within the limits (Y − J)err ≤ 0.118 and (J − Ks)err ≤ 0.136. This set includes 144 bodies classified as Bkni $B_k^{\textrm{ni}}$Bkni , 613 as Cni, 197 as Cgxni $C_{\textrm{gx}}^{\textrm{ni}}$Cgxni , 91 as Xtni $X_t^{\textrm{ni}}$Xtni , 440 as Dsni $D_s^{\textrm{ni}}$Dsni , 665 as Klni $K_l^{\textrm{ni}}$Klni , 233 as Adni $A_d^{\textrm{ni}}$Adni , 3315 as Sni, and 798 as Vni. We report the albedo distribution for each taxonomic group and we compute new median values for the main types. We found that V-type and A-type candidates have identical size frequency distributions, but V types are five times more common than A types. Several particular cases, such as the A-type asteroid (11616) 1996 BQ2 and the S-type (3675) Kematsch, both in the Cybele population, are discussed.
Abstract
For almost two decades, researchers have observed the preservation of the quantum statistical properties of bosons in a large variety of plasmonic systems. In addition, the possibility of ...preserving nonclassical correlations in light-matter interactions mediated by scattering among photons and plasmons stimulated the idea of the conservation of quantum statistics in plasmonic systems. It has also been assumed that similar dynamics underlie the conservation of the quantum fluctuations that define the nature of light sources. So far, plasmonic experiments have been performed in nanoscale systems in which complex multiparticle interactions are restrained. Here, we demonstrate that the quantum statistics of multiparticle systems are not always preserved in plasmonic platforms and report the observation of their modification. Moreover, we show that optical near fields provide additional scattering paths that can induce complex multiparticle interactions. Remarkably, the resulting multiparticle dynamics can, in turn, lead to the modification of the excitation mode of plasmonic systems. These observations are validated through the quantum theory of optical coherence for single- and multi-mode plasmonic systems. Our findings unveil the possibility of using multiparticle scattering to perform exquisite control of quantum plasmonic systems.
Abstract
Two-photon excitation spectroscopy is a nonlinear technique that has gained rapidly in interest and significance for studying the complex energy-level structure and transition probabilities ...of materials. While the conventional spectroscopy based on tunable classical light has been long established, quantum light provides an alternative way towards excitation spectroscopy with potential advantages in temporal and spectral resolution, as well as reduced photon fluxes. By using a quantum Fourier transform that connects the sum-frequency intensity and N00N-state temporal interference, we present an approach for quantum interferometric two-photon excitation spectroscopy. Our proposed protocol overcomes the difficulties of engineering two-photon joint spectral intensities and fine-tuned absorption-frequency selection. These results may significantly facilitate the use of quantum interferometric spectroscopy for extracting the information about the electronic structure of the two-photon excited-state manifold of atoms or molecules without any requirement for precise and complicated scanning in the spectral domain. This may be particularly relevant for photon-sensitive biological and chemical samples.
We present the discovery and characterisation of two transiting planets observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) orbiting the nearby (d⋆ ≈ 22 pc), bright (J ≈ 9 mag) M3.5 dwarf ...LTT 3780 (TOI–732). We confirm both planets and their association with LTT 3780 via ground-based photometry and determine their masses using precise radial velocities measured with the CARMENES spectrograph. Precise stellar parameters determined from CARMENES high-resolution spectra confirm that LTT 3780 is a mid-M dwarf with an effective temperature of T(eff) = 3360 ± 51 K, a surface gravity of log g⋆ = 4.81 ± 0.04 (cgs), and an iron abundance of Fe/H = 0.09 ± 0.16 dex, with an inferred mass of M⋆ = 0.379 ± 0.016M⊙ and a radius of R⋆ = 0.382 ± 0.012R⊙. The ultra-short-period planet LTT 3780 b (P(b) = 0.77 d) with a radius of 1.35(−0.06,+0.06) R⊕, a mass of 2.34(−0.23,+0.24) M⊕, and a bulk density of 5.24(−0.81,+0.94) g/cu.cm joins the population of Earth-size planets with rocky, terrestrial composition. The outer planet, LTT 3780 c, with an orbital period of 12.25 d, radius of 2.42(−0.10,+0.10) R⊕, mass of 6.29(−0.61,+0.63) M⊕, and mean density of 2.45(−0.37,+0.44) g/cu.cm belongs to the population of dense sub-Neptunes. With the two planets located on opposite sides of the radius gap, this planetary system is an excellent target for testing planetary formation, evolution, and atmospheric models. In particular, LTT 3780 c is an ideal object for atmospheric studies with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).
ABSTRACT
We aim to determine the distribution of basaltic asteroids (classified as V-types) based on the spectrophotometric data reported in the MOVIS-C catalogue. A total of 782 asteroids were ...identified. The observations with all four filters (Y, J, H, Ks), available for 297 of these candidates, allow a reliable comparison with the laboratory data of howardite, eucrite, and diogenite meteorites. We found that the majority of the basaltic candidates (≈95${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$) are located in the inner main belt, while only 29 (≈4${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$) and 8 (≈1${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$) are located in the middle (MMB) and outer main belt (OMB), respectively. A fraction of ≈33${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ from the V-type candidates is associated with the Vesta family (with respect to AstDyS). We also identified four MMB V-type candidates belonging to (15) Eunomia family, and another four low inclination ones corresponding to (135) Hertha. We report differences between the colour indices and albedo distributions of the V-type candidates located in the inner main belt compared to those from the MMB and OMB. These results support the hypothesis of a different origin for the basaltic asteroids with a semimajor axis beyond 2.5 au. Furthermore, lithological differences are present between the vestoids and the inner low inclination basaltic asteroids. The data allow us to estimate the unbiased distribution of basaltic asteroids across the main asteroid belt. We highlight that at least 80${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ of the ejected basaltic material from (4) Vesta is missing or is not yet detected because it is fragmented in sizes smaller than 1 km.
The responses of marine species to environmental changes and anthropogenic pressures (e.g., fishing) interact with ecological and evolutionary processes that are not well understood. Knowledge of ...changes in the distribution range and genetic diversity of species and their populations into the future is essential for the conservation and sustainable management of resources. Almaco jack (Seriola rivoliana) is a pelagic fish with high importance to fisheries and aquaculture in the Pacific Ocean. In this study, we assessed contemporary genomic diversity and structure in loci that are putatively under selection (outlier loci) and determined their potential functions. Using a combination of genotype–environment association, spatial distribution models, and demogenetic simulations, we modeled the effects of climate change (under three different RCP scenarios) and fishing pressure on the species' geographic distribution and genomic diversity and structure to 2050 and 2100. Our results show that most of the outlier loci identified were related to biological and metabolic processes that may be associated with temperature and salinity. The contemporary genomic structure showed three populations—two in the Eastern Pacific (Cabo San Lucas and Eastern Pacific) and one in the Central Pacific (Hawaii). Future projections suggest a loss of suitable habitat and potential range contractions for most scenarios, while fishing pressure decreased population connectivity. Our results suggest that future climate change scenarios and fishing pressure will affect the genomic structure and genotypic composition of S. rivoliana and lead to loss of genomic diversity in populations distributed in the eastern‐central Pacific Ocean, which could have profound effects on fisheries that depend on this resource.
Las respuestas de las especies marinas ante los cambios ambientales y presiones antropogénicas (por ejemplo, la sobrepesca) interactúan con procesos ecológicos y evolutivos que no se comprenden bien. El conocimiento del cambio en el rango de distribución y la diversidad genética de las especies y sus poblaciones en el futuro es fundamental para la conservación y gestión sostenible de los recursos. El jurel (Seriola rivoliana) es un pez pelágico de gran importancia para la pesca y la acuicultura en el Océano Pacífico. En este estudio, evaluamos la diversidad y estructura genómica contemporánea en loci que supuestamente están bajo selección (loci atípicos) y determinamos sus funciones potenciales. Se utilizó la combinación de métodos de asociación genotipo‐ambiente, modelos de distribución espacial y simulaciones demogenéticas, para modelar los efectos del cambio climático (bajo tres escenarios RCP diferentes) y presión de pesca sobre la distribución geográfica de la especie, la diversidad y estructura genómica para los años 2050 y 2100. Nuestros resultados mostraron que la mayoría de los loci atípicos están relacionados con procesos biológicos y metabólicos que pueden estar asociados con la temperatura y la salinidad. La estructura genómica contemporánea mostró tres poblaciones: dos en el Pacífico oriental (Cabo San Lucas y el Pacífico oriental) y una en el Pacífico central (Hawai). Las proyecciones futuras sugieren una pérdida de hábitat idóneo y posibles contracciones del área de distribución para la mayoría de los escenarios, mientras que la presión de la pesca redujo la conectividad de las poblaciones. Nuestros resultados sugieren que los escenarios de cambio climático y la presión pesquera afectarán la estructura genómica y la composición genotípica de S. rivoliana y conducirán a la pérdida de diversidad genómica en las poblaciones distribuidas en el Océano Pacífico centro‐oriental, lo que podría tener efectos en las pesquerías que dependen de este recurso.
