A capsule history of women's filmmaking in Mexico is presented, and Maria Novaro's "Lola" is analyzed. In "Lola," Novaro traces emotional sparks of female youth subculture in Mexico City that allow ...an unusual perspective on Mexican women today.

The seventh generation of North American Native peoples since the arrival of Columbus is a generation with an urgent mission: the cultural, political, and economic reconstruction of Native ...communities. The social ills plaguing Native groups due to colonial domination by non-Native communities--alcoholism, violence, and social disintegration--have effects not unlike a deadly epidemic threatening the extinction of Native peoples. In this thesis, I examine the use of theatre by Native artists as a tool of social healing, a tool which explores possible "medicine" for the colonial "epidemic." Monique Mojica' s Princess Pocahontas and the Blue Spots "cures" by decolonizing minds, critiquing and re-writing the history and institutions which continue the domination of Native groups by non-Natives. Tomson Highway's The Rez Sisters and Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing "cure" with a concentration upon the lived experiences of contemporary Native peoples, suggesting that successful medicine must incorporate economic, political, and social reorganization with the kind of cultural recovery suggested by artists like Mojica. I then contextualize Mojica' s and Highway's work in terms of other contemporary work by Native theatre artists in order to suggest that Native theatre works as a kind of platform for Native political activism. I conclude by suggesting what the directions suggested by these plays could mean in terms of the broader Canadian social and artistic context, and how theatre serves as an appropriate metaphor of this Native/non-Native relationship.

The primary objective of this thesis is to begin increased literary discourse on Asian American literary style. It examines the political and economic forces in American society which have shaped ...perceptions of Asian Americans, their literature, and its criticism, which has thus far been predominantly theme-centered. With the recent explosion of Asian American literature and scholarship, this thesis urges a critical move toward examining issues of style with emphasis equal to that devoted to discussions of socio-historic context. Poet Janice Mirikitani, author of Shedding Silence, and novelist Ronyoung Kim, author of Clay Walls, are discussed with attention to personal/political/social context as well to their shared stylistic strategy of juxtaposition, more commonly recognized as paradox. Suggested is that many other Asian American authors employ such a strategy; this thesis hints at understanding an Asian American stylistic intertextuality that will hopefully be further explored in the future.
