The problem of authority has been selected as the critical dimension through which various theories and practices of organizational behavior are expressed. Following a discussion of the confusions ...and lacunae in leadership theory, a review of philosophies, ideologies, and practices is presented that identifies two major movements: the traditional theorists and the human relations proponents. Some attention is given to the contemporary revisions and models that endeavor to ameliorate the tensions between the aforementioned movements. Finally, an explication of leadership is presented that attempts to account for the efficacy of certain leadership propositions with respect to a priori criteria of organizational effectiveness.
This paper identifies a newly emerging function for the behavioral scientist and exemplifies its activities by describing and analyzing some recent work in the organizational change area. First, some ...traditional strategies of change are discussed, followed by a description and analysis of some of the newer change programs associated with the National Training Laboratories, Tavistock Institute, R. R. Blake, C. Argyris, and others. Finally, the "role strains" which inhere in this new action role are discussed.
Participating (as a tender 19 year old) in the terrible Battle of the Bulge in WWII taught the author many life lessons, including: life is precious and precarious -- hence, do not procrastinate; ...wars are won or lost on one or two decisive battles; and sustainable leadership is about winning the war. His epiphany of late as it relates to sustainable leadership is: Great leaders earn respect, daily, and build and maintain trust with all constituents. Sure, there are other vital attributes and yet without these two heart-and-lung elements -- respect and trust -- you won't survive the day, pass the test of time, or win the war. The ability to earn and show respect will win you leadership roles. Embedded in trust is the ability to form and maintain relationships. Leadership is the greatest performing art of all if leaders build on the firm foundation of trust and respect.
