Davis shares why she loves her nesting doll from the show Commander in Chief. They were filming an episode about the birthday of her character and there was a scene where the camera pans across a sea ...of presents that had been sent to her. After they wrapped, she was looking over all the gifts, and this little wooden doll caught her eye. She thought that it looked exactly like her. She realized that it was actually a Russian nesting doll that had a bald eagle and a tiny Air Force One plane inside it. For her, it was simply astounding that one of their prop designers had gone to the trouble to handpaint every single detail, even though the doll probably wouldn't make it onscreen.
Working on films that resonated with female audiences like Thelma and Louise and A League of Their Own heightened my awareness of how few opportunities women have to feel empowered coming out of a ...movie. But it wasn't until I had my first child that I noticed a similar problem in children's media, and its surprising link to the issues that plague us in adulthood. When we present the data to studios and content creators, their jaws are on the ground. In family films, the ratio of males to females is 3:1. Shockingly, the ratio of male to female characters has been exactly the same since 1946. Of the characters with jobs, 81% are male. And even more baffling, women make up only 17% of characters in crowd scenes in these films. In many segments of society -- Fortune 500 boards, law partners, tenured professors, Congress -- the percentage of women stalls out at around 17%.
