Deals with the life and career of the 15th-century German painter and printmaker Martin Schongauer. Focuses on the reception of the artist's work in Florence during his lifetime, including the ...influence exerted upon renowned Florentine artists such as Andrea del Verrocchio. Compares the latter's sculpture and relief sculpture to Schongauer's prints.
Four years ago, I briefly discussed in this journal the artistic activity of Maso di Bartolommeo and his death in Dubrovnik (Ragusa) in Dalmatia. Although the results of my subsequent research, ...summarized here, on the Florentine artist and his circle do not bring about surprising news, I offer some historical details and stylistic observations, which, I hope, help to round out his biography and his artistic profile. Although Maso di Bartolommeo was certainly not the most influential artist of the Florentine Quattrocento--serving primarily as an aid and collaborator to more renowned figures such as Donatello, Michelozzo, and Luca della Robbia--his diverse activities led Maso to be included among the most important proponents of the novel decorative style introduced during the period. As part of his own entrepreneurial activities, Maso employed numerous stonemasons and metalworkers among his circle of artists. Revised Publication Abstract
