The name Erasmus of Rotterdam conjures up a golden age of scholarly integrity and the disinterested pursuit of knowledge, when learning could command public admiration without the need for authorial ...self-promotion. Lisa Jardine, however, shows that Erasmus self-consciously created his own reputation as the central figure of the European intellectual world. Erasmus himself-the historical as opposed to the figural individual-was a brilliant, maverick innovator, who achieved little formal academic recognition in his own lifetime. What Jardine offers here is not only a fascinating study of Erasmu.
The 1950s were a time of transition both in literary and critical terms. Maurice Nadeau, editor and critic, notably through his literary columns in France-Observateur, was both an actor and a witness to this move towards a New Criticism and towards a renewal of the novel. What idea of literature did Nadeau construct in 1954 in the left-wing intellectual newspaper? What are the characteristics of his criticism and his literary choices? We will see that several tensions are at work, between proletarian and avant-garde literary choices, between ancient and modern criticism, between journalistic criticism (ephemeral) and scholarly criticism (which builds a new literary history).
Since the first studies observing pedagogical activities related to quality in translator training, many evolutions have taken place, in training programmes as well as in the professional world. ...Revision has gained a more streamline position in translation processes, and post-editing more and more visible, aided by the improvement of Neural Machine Translation (NMT) quality. These two activities, which aim at upgrading human translations, for revision, and machine translations, for post-editing, still respond to different expectations, practices and document types. However, the role of the skilled expert is acknowledged in normative texts about both activities, and the sealed barriers that existed before between human translation, assisted translation and machine translation, are increasingly blurred. In this paper, we will endeavour to set an integrated and balanced positioning of post-editing in translation training, leveraging the strengths and weaknesses of human translation as much as machine translation, in order to contribute to the long-lasting value of the professional translation specialist.
Tamizdat offers a new
perspective on the history of the Cold War by exploring the story
of the contraband manuscripts sent from the USSR to the
West. A word that means publishing "over there,"
...tamizdat manuscripts were rejected, censored, or never
submitted for publication in the Soviet Union and were smuggled
through various channels and printed outside the country, with or
without their authors' knowledge. Yasha Klots demonstrates how
tamizdat contributed to the formation of the twentieth-century
Russian literary canon: the majority of contemporary Russian
classics first appeared abroad long before they saw publication in
Russia.
Examining narratives of Stalinism and the Gulag, Klots focuses
on contraband manuscripts in the 1960s and 70s, from Khrushchev's
Thaw to Stagnation under Brezhnev. Klots revisits the traditional
notion of late Soviet culture as a binary opposition between the
underground and official state publishing. He shows that even as
tamizdat represented an alternative field of cultural production in
opposition to the Soviet regime and the dogma of Socialist Realism,
it was not devoid of its own hierarchy, ideological agenda, and
even censorship.
Tamizdat is a cultural history of Russian literature
outside the Iron Curtain. The Russian literary diaspora was the
indispensable ecosystem for these works. Yet in the post-Stalin
years, they also served as a powerful weapon on the cultural fronts
of the Cold War, laying bare the geographical, stylistic, and
ideological rifts between two disparate yet inextricably
intertwined fields of Russian literature, one at home, the other
abroad.
