In this dissertation, I study the forms that attempt to capture experience in language. From the anecdotes that write a life, to the sentences that inscribe the language of prison-spaces, to the ...fictions that tell and retell old fables. Most importantly I examine the movement between these forms which are at once anachronic, synchronic and perpetual. In the first chapter, False Case: The Anecdote” I examine the desire that Macedonio Fernández, Jorge Luis Borges and Ricardo Piglia share for the anecdotal, which I define as the recording of an untraceable life. The writing of anecdotes I propose, consists of going to the limits of writing oneself in a single experience only to then erase oneself. In this “project” all three authors work with the anecdotal to challenge positions of authorship, to establish a community of writers who operate under the understanding that plagiarizing and copying are not a violation of the law but rather what brings them together. In my second chapter “Metaphysical Case: The Sentence,” I look at the ways in which an experience is captured in the form of a sentence as a specific form of the aphorism but also a grammatical and juridical structure for the inscription of order on a body. I analyze the works of Eduardo Lalo, Piglia and Borges, especially the texts written inside the prison. The prison, works both as the opening for a place to think, but also as a dead-end and a literal condemnation. For my third chapter “Fictional Case: The Fable” I study the way in which experience is organized in a causal way—as a sequence of events. Starting out from Aesop’s fables and biblical parables I look at the use of the form in a traditional sense and then I analyze how Augusto Monterroso and Juan José Arreola, revitalize and reappropriate old fables and parables in order to evaluate the causal construction of the form. For my last chapter “Perpetual Movement: The Flies” I see in Monterroso’s infinite collection of quotes about the fly the epitome of his whole literary project as well as the perpetual movement I trace throughout my chapters. By tracing this movement, I redefine what these “brief forms” have meant and still mean in the Latin American canon and I also propose them as critical maneuvers for any given text.
Winner of the National Book Award in Poetry (2004) Since the 1965 publication of her first book, Dream Barker, selected for the Yale Younger Poets Award, Jean Valentine has published eight ...collections of poetry to critical acclaim. Spare and intensely-felt, Valentine's poems present experience as only imperfectly graspable. This volume gathers together all of Valentine's published poems and includes a new collection, "Door in the Mountain." Valentine's poetry is as recognizable as the slant truth of a dream. She is a brave, unshirking poet who speaks with fire on the great subjects--love, and death, and the soul. Her images--strange, canny visions of the unknown self--clang with the authenticity of real experience. This is an urgent art that wants to heal what it touches, a poetry that wants to tell, intimately, the whole life.
Anahtar Sözcükler: Paul Eluard, Varlık, Ontoloji, Doğal Akış, Gerçeküstücü ŞiirDEPTH OF THE POETRY OF PAUL ELUARD: ETERNAL BELIEF IN HUMAN AND LIFEAbstract: In this study, we aim to analyze the depth of French surrealist poet Paul Eluard’s poetry experience, and in frame of thematic method we try to reveal that that Eluard’s poetry is based on a deep philosophy contrary to its plain discourse and that it has a unique path rooted in both the historical conditions of the era and the poet’s private life. As we go deep into the internal structure of Eluard’s poetry, we see that it is based on an interesting dialectical basis in the context of “disengagement” and “continuity”. In this process of mutual change, the transformation and formation of the being has not “linear” but “circular” process. However, in this association of opposites, what really matters in Eluard is the “natural flow” which can be defined as healthy, entitative, natural and harmonic flow of life and the being freed from a ...
There are other labyrinths apart from Crete's: the streets of a big city like Paris for Gérard de Nerval, or London for T.S. Eliot. Even more complex is the labyrinth of the human being where those ...who Pierre Seghers called in his 1972 anthology (reviewed and completed in 1978 and 1985) « les nouveaux poètes maudits » (« the new accursed poets ») wondered or got lost. Three of them will be studied in this article: Jacques Prével (1915-1951), Jean-Pierre Duprey (1930-1959) and specially Roger-Arnould Rivière (1930-1959), an admirable unknown poet who believed having recognized Dylan Thomas' « intricate image » in his first poems and who wrote restlessly and beautifully his « vertigineux à-pic de la nuit ».
This dissertation is a poetry manuscript which explores the author's understanding of the North Dakota landscape. Upon arriving in North Dakota from the landscape of the Pacific Northwest, the author ...experienced profound disorientation, which he was unable to understand through a poetic sensibility that had been formed in the mountains and forests of his previous home. Absent his familiar vocabulary of imagery and metaphor, he had to adapt his language. In doing so, he discovered a landscape of terrible beauty, absence, and resilient people, who weather winters and disasters alike, with hard stoicism. The poems are characterized by an expansive mythological lexicon, drawing on Biblical language, the imagery of the Red River Valley, as well as the French surrealist Paul Eluard in a series of translated poems. Through this exploration, the dissertation unravels the familiar language of the author and replaces it with the imagery and metaphors of North Dakota. The dissertation is called a visitor's guide in order to draw on both connotations of the phrase; it was written by a visitor, and is intended for those who may physically or metaphorically travel to a place few outside of it ever consider, for as Thomas McGrath notes, “North Dakota is everywhere.”
