Ane Slavetić i šal pok. Ane Erlinger.
Proposed model illustrating how Salidroside alleviates Ischemic Brain Injury.
Sal protected against ischemic stroke after cerebral I/R injury through up-regulating BNDK expression and TrKB ...phosphorylation, which mediated the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway activation in DNA-binding-dependent and -independent manners.

There is evidence suggesting that inhibition of apoptosis plays a critical role in preventing neurons from damage and even death, after brain ischemia/reperfusion, which shows therapeutic potential for clinical treatment of brain injury. In this study, We preformed MCAO model in C57BL/6J wild-type (BDNK+/+) and BDNK knockout (BDNF−/−) mice respectively, and investigated the neuroprotective effect of Salidroside (Sal) and its underlying mechanisms. The results showed that Sal reversed brain infarct size, reduced cerebral edema, decreased the neurological deficit score and diminished TUNEL positive cells significantly. However, BDNK deficiency inhibited the neuroprotective effect of Sal. In addition, Sal increased cell viability, ameliorated neuron cell injury by decreasing LDH activity, and inhibited cell apoptotic rate. Sal suppressed apoptotic signaling via DNA-binding-dependent and -independent mechanisms. Furthermore, the neuroprotective effect of Sal on BDNK was mediated by PI3K/Akt pathway, which was proved by the use of PI3K knockout (PI3K−/−) mice and siRNA-PI3K. In summary, these data strongly suggested that Sal could be used as an effective neuroprotective agent to protect against ischemic stroke after cerebral I/R injury through regulating BDNK-mediated PI3K/Akt apoptotic pathway in DNA-binding-dependent and -independent manners.

The Jurassic Coast Range Ophiolites, California, provide evidence for tectonic processes that formed the western margin of North America. Whether the ophiolites were formed in a mid-ocean ridge, back ...arc or forearc setting, however, remains unconstrained. To address this issue, a systematic grid sampling approach was taken to examine the mantle section of an archetypal ~161 Ma Coast Range Ophiolite at Point Sal, California. The Point Sal peridotites are serpentinized, with 187Re187Os evidence for a localized Late Miocene alteration event in grids closest to the lowermost bounding fault of the ophiolite. This event is interpreted to be related to tectonic changes and hydration-dehydration reactions acting on the serpentinites in response to changes in the azimuth and rate of Pacific-North American plate motion. Alteration and serpentinization have not systematically affected highly siderophile element (HSE) abundances, especially Os, Ir or Ru which, together with rare earth element abundances, record significant melt depletion (>20%) of a fertile mantle protolith (187Os/188Os = ~0.129) during ophiolite formation. Peridotites subsequently experienced localized and heterogenous addition of Re, Pt, Pd and radiogenic 187Os/188Os from Cl-rich, oxidized (QFM) fluids. Geochemical features of both Point Sal peridotites, as well as associated basaltic lavas, are consistent with high degrees of partial melting and variable addition of fluids as also observed in global forearc peridotites. A forearc origin for the Point Sal Ophiolite Complex supports models for the dominant formation process of 153–166 Ma Coast Range Ophiolite infant Arc crust terranes within a single westward facing arc along the Sierra continental-margin.
Tropical forests are considered for greater species diversity and ensure climate change mitigation through carbon (C) sink which maintains terrestrial C storage in the world. Tree provides both ...tangible (timber, fuelwood, etc. For humans) and intangible benefits (as climate security through C sink) that maintains ecosystem processes. Tropical Sal forests are gaining popularity due to its remarkable contribution as C sink, storage, budget and flux. In the present study, an effort has been made to explore vegetational statistics along with C storage, budget and flux in four different site qualities (SQ) of Sal dominating tropical deciduous forest of Chhattisgarh, India. The density (individuals/ha) and basal area (m2/ha) varied from 710 to 1010 and 33.5–46.8 in tree, 2000–2500 and 0.32–0.33 in sapling and 9750–14500 and 17.96–21.43 in seedling, respectively in varying SQ. The total biomass varied from 182.27 to 375.84 t/ha in varying SQ. The total C in trees varied from 79.86 to 163.63 t ha−1. Quantity of C in above ground and below ground portions in trees on different sites were 72.32–143.36 t/ha and 7.54–20.27 t/ha, respectively. Total aboveground tree C sequestration values ranged between 5.12 and 11.68 t C ha−1yr−1 on different SQ. The C storage and net fluxes were represented in compartment models to assess the various SQ. As per models, forest received 14.63, 10.81, 8.19 and 6.83 t/ha/yr of C input through net primary production (NPP) in SQ-I, SQ-II, SQ-III and SQ-IV, respectively which are depleted as 3.55, 3.12, 2.77 and 2.33 t/ha/yr as total C input in the soil. Moreover 1.77 (SQ-I), 1.60 (SQ-II), 1.46 (SQ-III) and 1.30 (SQ-IV) t ha−1 yr−1of C were transferred from foliage to litter compartment, respectively. These dynamics, budgeting and flux of C represents “how C stored and moved within an ecosystem”. Similarly, it affects overall terrestrial C pools that is governed by varying SQ.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play pivotal roles in modulating key biological processes in gastric cancer (GC). As a newly identified miRNA, the function and potential mechanism of miR‐188‐5p in GC has not been ...thoroughly elucidated. Here, quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction detection showed abnormally higher expression of miR‐188‐5p in GC cells and tissues. Gain‐of‐function analysis in vitro showed that miR‐188‐5p promoted GC cell proliferation and migration, while loss‐of‐function studies showed the reverse. Targetscan has predicted that phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) was a potential target gene of miR‐188‐5p. miR‐188‐5p suppressed PTEN messenger RNA and protein expression and activated downstream AKT/mTOR signaling in GC cells, but luciferase reporter analysis showed that PTEN was not regulated by miR‐188‐5p via the 3′ untranslated region. Furthermore, we observed that miR‐188‐5p overexpression promoted Sal‐like protein 4 (SALL4) protein expression, cellular nuclear translocation, and transcription. Knockdown of SALL4 eliminated the effect of miR‐188‐5p in GC cells as well as suppression of PTEN. Taken together, our results demonstrate that miR‐188‐5p promotes GC cell proliferation and migration while suppressing tumor suppressor gene PTEN expression via transcriptional upregulation of oncogene SALL4. We conclude that miR‐188‐5p acts as an oncomiRNA in GC and may be a promising therapeutic target for GC.
According to various international reports, Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIEd) is one of the currently emerging fields in educational technology. Whilst it has been around for about 30 ...years, it is still unclear for educators how to make pedagogical advantage of it on a broader scale, and how it can actually impact meaningfully on teaching and learning in higher education. This paper seeks to provide an overview of research on AI applications in higher education through a systematic review. Out of 2656 initially identified publications for the period between 2007 and 2018, 146 articles were included for final synthesis, according to explicit inclusion and exclusion criteria. The descriptive results show that most of the disciplines involved in AIEd papers come from Computer Science and STEM, and that quantitative methods were the most frequently used in empirical studies. The synthesis of results presents four areas of AIEd applications in academic support services, and institutional and administrative services: 1. profiling and prediction, 2. assessment and evaluation, 3. adaptive systems and personalisation, and 4. intelligent tutoring systems. The conclusions reflect on the almost lack of critical reflection of challenges and risks of AIEd, the weak connection to theoretical pedagogical perspectives, and the need for further exploration of ethical and educational approaches in the application of AIEd in higher education.
