Though there are now many hundreds of confirmed exoplanets known, the binarity of exoplanet host stars is not well understood. This is particularly true of host stars that harbor a giant planet in a ...highly eccentric orbit since these are more likely to have had a dramatic dynamical history that transferred angular momentum to the planet. Here we present observations of four exoplanet host stars that utilize the excellent resolving power of the Differential Speckle Survey Instrument on the Gemini North telescope. Two of the stars are giants and two are dwarfs. Each star is host to a giant planet with an orbital eccentricity >0.5 and whose radial velocity (RV) data contain a trend in the residuals to the Keplerian orbit fit. These observations rule out stellar companions 4-8 mag fainter than the host star at passbands of 692 nm and 880 nm. The resolution and field of view of the instrument result in exclusion radii of 0".05-1".4, which excludes stellar companions within several AU of the host star in most cases. We further provide new RVs for the HD 4203 system that confirm that the linear trend previously observed in the residuals is due to an additional planet. These results place dynamical constraints on the source of the planet's eccentricities, place constraints on additional planetary companions, and inform the known distribution of multiplicity amongst exoplanet host stars.
Human-computer confluence refers to an invisible, implicit, embodied or even implanted interaction between humans and system components. New classes of user interfaces are emerging that make use of ...several sensors and are able to adapt their physical properties to the current situational context of users. A key aspect of human-computer confluence is its potential for transforming human experience in the sense of bending, breaking and blending the barriers between the real, the virtual and the augmented, to allow users to experience their body and their world in new ways. Research on Presence, Embodiment and Brain-Computer Interface is already exploring these boundaries and asking questions such as: Can we seamlessly move between the virtual and the real? Can we assimilate fundamentally new senses through confluence? The aim of this book is to explore the boundaries and intersections of the multidisciplinary field of HCC and discuss its potential applications in different domains, including healthcare, education, training and even arts.
The comprehensive defeat of the Jacobite Irish in the Williamite conflict, a component within the pan-European Nine Years’ War, prevented the exiled James II from regaining his English throne, ended ...realistic prospects of a Stuart restoration and partially secured the new regime of King William III and Queen Mary created by the Glorious Revolution. The principal events - the Siege of Londonderry, the Battles of the Boyne and Aughrim, and the two Sieges and Treaty of Limerick - have subsequently become totems around which opposing constructions of Irish history have been erected. John Childs, one of the foremost authorities on warfare in Early Modern Britain and Europe, cuts through myth and the accumulations of three centuries to present a balanced, detailed narrative and chronology of the campaigns. He argues that the struggle was typical of the late seventeenth-century, principally decided by economic resources and attrition in which the ‘small war’ comprising patrols, raids, occupation of captured regions by small garrisons, police actions against irregulars and attacks on supply lines was more significant in determining the outcome than the set piece battles and sieges.

Prenant généralement pour sujet le repos de soldats, retranchés dans de sombres intérieurs, ces scènes se diffusent rapidement dans les Pays-Bas de l’époque. Les différents experts et théoriciens de l’époque les identifient alors comme des scènes de cortegaerd, terme issu du français « corps de garde ». Renvoyant dans un premier temps à la brûlante actualité de la guerre de Quatre-Vingts Ans (1568-1648), de telles œuvres s’en éloignent néanmoins rapidement au gré d’une transformation, aussi subtile que radicale, opérée par ces peintres sur l’iconographie du mercenaire pillard : celui-ci quitte, en effet, peu à peu, dans ces scènes, les tristes oripeaux du maraudeur pour revêtir les luxueux atours de l’officier éclairé et raffiné. En miroir de cette progressive assimilation de la figure de l’officier à celle de l’amateur, doit également être perçue celle du peintre à l’officier, régnant en maître sur son atelier. Initiée dans les années 1630, cette double mutation croisée des images du soldat et de l’artiste témoigne de la mise en place d’un intense mouvement de légitimation. Si une guerre de l’art a bien eu lieu en Hollande au cours de la première moitié du siècle, il s’agit avant tout d’une guerre de conquête de marchés et de statuts, menée par d’ambitieux artistes s’identifiant eux-mêmes comme les membres d’un corps moderne et indépendant de la peinture, portant haut les couleurs d’un discours théorique nouveau.
Amid a climate of overall reformation, which encompassed the whole of Dutch society, a group of ambitious young artists from Amsterdam developed a new kind of compositions during the first half of the XVIIth century. These painters were mostly known in the Netherlands for their depictions of relaxing soldiers in dark interiors. Those works were quickly given the label cortegaerd by art experts and theorists from the time, a term that derives from the French military term corps de garde, or guardroom. While initially referring to the brutal actualities of the Eighty Years War (1568-1648) in their art, these artists seem to have quickly moved away from the image of the pillaging mercenary towards a radically different iconography. Indeed, the Dutch soldier rapidly started to leave behind its sad rags for the luxurious attire of the enlightened officer and amateur. Mirroring this painted transformation of the officer into the art lover, painters similarly created visual parity between themselves, as masters reigning over their workshop. Beginning in the 1630s, this twofold transformation testifies to the existence of an intensity of ambition. If a war of art really did take place in Holland during the first half of the XVIIth century, it was therefore a war of conquest of new markets and social statuses by young artists who saw themselves as members of a modern painting corps. This desire for artistic legitimacy was launched by an emerging class of painters who were not only eager to establish their independence from a dominant form of painting, but also become the standard-bearers for a new theoretical discourse.
Modern currency originates in the inconvertible, legal tender paper money that Massachusetts devised in 1690. The circumstances that led to its creation are more complex than the typical story of ...wartime specie shortage. Due to temporary political constraints of that turbulent period, the currency could be neither backed by land nor imposed on anyone, as was then standard. Instead, it had to be disguised from England as a simple, private-seeming IOU. By pleasing both its pay-demanding troops and England, the government maximized its probability of survival subject to the constraints.

No previous work on John Eliot's mission to the Indians has told such a comprehensive and engaging story. Richard Cogley takes a dual approach: he delves deeply into Eliot's theological writings and ...describes the historical development of Eliot's missionary work. By relating the two, he presents fresh perspectives that challenge widely accepted assessments of the Puritan mission. Cogley incorporates Eliot's eschatology into the history of the mission, takes into account the biographies of the proselytes (the "praying Indians") and the individual histories of the Christian Indian settlements (the "praying towns"), and corrects misperceptions about the mission's role in English expansion. He also addresses other interpretive problems in Eliot's mission, such as why the Puritans postponed their evangelizing mission until 1646, why Indians accepted or rejected the mission, and whether the mission played a role in causing King Philip's War. This book makes signal contributions to New England history, Native American history, and religious studies.
Eberhard Happel, German Baroque author of an extensive body of work of fiction and nonfiction, has for many years been categorized as a "courtly-gallant" novelist. InMediating Culture in the ...Seventeenth-Century German Novel, author Gerhild Scholz Williams argues that categorizing him thus is to seriously misread him and to miss out on a fascinating perspective on this dynamic period in German history.
Happel primarily lived and worked in the vigorous port city of Hamburg, which was a "media center" in terms of the access it offered to a wide library of books in public and private collections. Hamburg's port status meant it buzzed with news and information, and Happel drew on this flow of data in his novels. His books deal with many topics of current interest-national identity formation, gender and sexualities, Western European encounters with neighbors to the East, confrontations with non-European and non-Western powers and cultures-and they feature multiple media, including news reports, news collections, and travel writings. As a result, Happel's use of contemporary source material in his novels feeds our current interest in the impact of the production of knowledge on seventeenth-century narrative.Mediating Culture in the Seventeenth-Century German Novelexplores the narrative wealth and multiversity of Happel's work, examines Happel's novels as illustrative of seventeenth-century novel writing in Germany, and investigates the synergistic relationship in Happel's writings between the booming print media industry and the evolution of the German novel.
