The war was prosecuted ruthlessly by the Irish Republican Army which, paralleling the political efforts of Sinn Féin, hoped to break Britain's will to rule Ireland and create an independent Irish ...republic. The British retaliated by introducing two new irregular forces into Ireland, the Black and Tans and the Auxiliaries. Fighting took place principally in counties Cork, Limerick, Tipperary, Monaghan, Armagh, Clare, Kerry, and Longford. It was sporadic but vicious, with fewer than 2,000 IRA volunteers facing over 50,000 crown forces. The IRA depended upon energetic local leaders -- where there were none, there was little fighting.
In many countries, the services of nurses during the First World War have recently been given a commemorative space in an attempt to make the memory of the war more inclusive and less masculine. In ...contrast, Turkish nurses' experience has so far been studied only from a nursing education and practice perspective. This article aims to shed light on this forgotten story by taking a gender and war studies perspective and reflect upon the much-celebrated memory of women fighters in Turkey.
Combining biography with philosophy, this book explores John Dewey's two-year trip to China (1919–1921) and its legacy for him as a teacher and a learner. Jessica Ching-Sze Wang looks at how Dewey ...was received in China, what he learned, and how he was changed as a result. She examines the intriguing dynamics shaping China's reactions to Dewey and Dewey's interpretations of China, and details the evolving process in which Dewey came to understand China on its own terms, rather than from Eurocentric perspectives. Tracing China's influence on Dewey, Wang considers how his visit contributed to the subsequent development of his social and political philosophy. China provided a unique vantage point for Dewey to observe international politics, which led him to reconsider the meaning of internationalism. Also, his exposure to Chinese communal culture enabled him to reject the Western preoccupation with democracy in politics and to emphasize democracy as all-encompassing culture. Finally, Wang discusses how Dewey's own observations and appraisals of Chinese society can give credence to the notion of Confucian democracy for China.

Ernie O'Malley (1897–1957) was one of the most talented and colourful of
modern Irish republicans. An important IRA leader in the 1916–1923 Irish
Revolution, this bookish gunman subsequently became a ...distinguished intellectual,
and the author of two classic autobiographical accounts of the revolutionary period:
On Another Man's Wound and The Singing Flame. His
post-revolutionary life took on a bohemian flavour. Travelling extensively in Europe
and America, he mixed with a wide range of artistic and literary figures, and
devoted himself to a variety of writing projects. In his IRA career he mixed with
revolutionaries such as Michael Collins and Eamon de Valera; in his post-IRA years
his friends included Samuel Beckett, Louis MacNeice, John Wayne, and John Ford. This
thematic biography draws on previously unseen archival sources, and introduces
O'Malley to both scholarly and general readers. O'Malley's post-revolutionary life
was as turbulent as his IRA years, and illuminates many persistent themes of Irish
history, ranging from the origins and culture of militant republicanism and the
complexities of Anglo–Irish relations to the development of intellectual
and artistic life in twentieth-century Ireland.
