An obituary for retired newspaper publisher Robert Joseph Mathes, who died on Jul 14, 2005 at the age of 76, is presented. As publisher of the Daily Star in Hammond LA, beginning in 1962, Mathes was ...one of the few newspaper leaders to welcome community news from the black community, including engagements and wedding announcements. His editorials in the civil rights era of the 1960s called for moderation, communication, and leadership in south Louisiana.

The movement of the hip in popular music is discussed, focusing on the hip movement in the rumba. Four literary examples are presented to illustrate the rumba's critical strategy in works by ...Guillermo Cabrera Infante, Lydia Cabrera, Rosario Ferre and the Xhosa oral legend transcribed in written English by A. C. Jordan.
The reaction between Cabrera Infante's "Exorcismos" and the "Duchamp Effect" is explored. The "Duchamp Effect" refers to an attitude of indifference or hostility toward "high" art.

Gallery EL Art Center and the Historical Museum in Sanok invite you from 23.11.2006 - 14.01.2007 an exhibition of works by Polish artist Zdzisław Beksiński (1929-2005). Gallery EL will present about 200 works from all periods of his work. Beksiński was interested in art photography, drawing, painting and sculpture. In the collages he created, he willingly used computer techniques. He was a self-taught artist. He exhibited his work in France, Germany and almost all important centers in Poland.
