This open access book discusses the emergence and development, and in some cases also the disappearance, of social movements and activism in Sweden during the 1980s. Its aim is to nuance and ...problematize the image of the 1980s as unilaterally dominated by right-wing politics and neoliberalism, as well as the idea of a conflict-free Scandinavian model. The 1980s have often been described as a period when the influence of radical-left movements during the 1970s diminished. Instead, this book argues that the 1980s was a decade in which new radical social movements emerged in opposition to the prevalent political order, including the nuclear disarmament movement, the women's movement, anti-fascist movements, and the punk and environmental movements. The authors also demonstrate how issues such as squatting, nuclear resistance, rent strikes and the environment, included a variety of contentious collective action. Sweden, therefore, presents an interesting example of how resistance and conflict in a strong welfare state have been influenced by contentious social movements. Placing Sweden within the wider context of Scandinavia and Europe, this edited collection makes an important contribution to the history of social movements.
The name “Actinomyces suis” was applied to each actinomycete isolate from swine actinomycosis by Grässer in 1962 and Franke in 1973. Nevertheless, this specific species was not included in the ...“Approved List of Bacterial Name” due to absence of the type cultures. Therefore, “Actinomyces suis” based on the description of Franke 1973 has been considered as “species incertae sedis”. We isolated a number of Actinomyces strains from swine. The representative strains of them was designated as Chiba 101 that was closely similar to the description in “Actinomyces suis” reported by Franke in 1973. Interestingly, it was found that the biological characteristics of these strains were also very similar to those of Actinomycesdenticolens. Furthermore, the average nucleotide identity (ANI) value between strain Chiba 101 and the type-strain of Actinomyces denticolens (=DSM 20671T) was found to be 99.95%. Sequences of the housekeeping genes and 16S rRNA gene showed 100% homology. These results strongly suggested that “Actinomyces suis” Franke 1973 is the same species as Actinomyces denticolens. Since actinomycosis caused by Actinomyces denticolens have been demonstrated in horses recently, it is necessary to recognize that Actinomycesdenticolens is the pathogenic actinomycetes in broader range of animals.
To obtain long-term oxidation protection for C/C composites at high temperatures, a dense Si-Cr-W multiphase ceramic coating was prepared on the surface of SiC coated C/C composites by a combined ...method of slurry brushing, heat treatment and liquid silicon infiltration, which drastically enhanced the oxidation resistance of SiC coated C/C composites at 1773 K and 1973 K in air. The microstructure evolution, phase composition and oxidation behavior of the multiphase coating were analyzed before and after oxidation. Results display that the Si-Cr-W coating with a thickness of ~ 115 µm possessed a dense and uniform multiphase mosaic structure (WSi2, CrSi2, Cr5Si3, SiC and Si). The mass loss of the coated sample was only 1.08 mg/cm2 after oxidation for 325 h at 1773 K in air owing to the formation of the compact compound glass layer (SiO2, Cr2O3 and WO3) acted as an oxygen diffusion barrier. The coating can effectively protect C/C substrate from oxidation for 76 h at 1973 K in air, demonstrating its outstanding high-temperature oxidation protective ability.

At a time when belonging and identity in Europe is complicated by questions of race, ethnicity, religion, and citizenship, Berna Gueneli explores the transnational works of acclaimed Turkish-German ...filmmaker and auteur Fatih Akın, demonstrates how Akın's aesthetics intersect with politics to reshape notions of Europe, European cinema, and cinematic history.
•Pre-oxidized WSi2-HfB2-SiC/SiC coating can protect C/C for 110 h at 1973 K.•Pre-oxidation at 1773 K is conducive to the oxidation protection of the coating.•The multiphase glass layer can fill and ...heal cracks and pores.•The self-healing glass layer has good stability and low oxygen permeability.
In order to improve the oxidation resistance of C/C composites at 1973 K, WSi2-HfB2-SiC coating was prepared on the surface of SiC coated C/C composites. Experiment results show that pre-oxidized WSi2-HfB2-SiC/SiC coating can protect C/C substrates for 110 h in the air environment at 1973 K. The oxidation products of the coating formed a multiphase glass layer on the surface of the sample, which greatly improved the oxidation resistance of the C/C sample at 1973 K. In addition, the reasons of good oxidation resistance of the coating and its oxidation protection mechanism were also analyzed in this paper.
The complex regulations of the Endangered Species Act can be challenging for environmental professionals who must comply with them or assist clients in compliance. This volume discusses the Act using ...clear scientific prose that all professionals can readily comprehend. It explores the history and the basic scientific theory underlying the Act. It provides an overview of its key provisions and examines the Act in the context of other key environmental planning statutes. The book also details the regulatory processes faced by other government agencies and private developers who must routinely ensure that their actions are in compliance.
Non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) grade is a major determinant of progression risk. The most widely utilised grading systems are the World Health Organization (WHO) 1973 and 2004 schemes. ...Recent publications suggest the utility of combining both into a four-tier or a hybrid three-tier system, subdividing WHO 2004 high grade into two separate categories while maintaining low grade as a single group.
We identified two retrospective cohorts of bladder resections/biopsies of papillary urothelial NMIBC with long term clinical follow-up. The sentinel specimen was assessed for WHO 2004 and 1973 grade, along with pathological stage and carcinoma in situ. Each case was additionally stratified into a hybrid three-tier system (low grade; high grade, grades 2 and 3) and a four-tier system (low grade, grades 1 and 2; high grade, grades 2 and 3). Uni- and multivariable analysis for progression and event free survival (PFS/EFS) were calculated along with the time dependent area under the curve (AUC) for each grading scheme.
There were 609 cases (Cohort A, n=343; Cohort B, n=266), including 449 (74%) pTa, 156 pT1 (26%) and four pTx with 338 (56%) low grade (177, grade 1; 161, grade 2) and 271 (44%) high grade (137, grade 2; 134, grade 3). A total of 108 patients progressed (17.7%): 97 high grade, (grade 3, n=59; grade 2, n=38). Multivariable analyses of PFS with the hybrid 3- and 4-tier systems showed higher Harrell's concordance indices (0.851 and 0.853, respectively) than WHO 1973 (0.844) and WHO 2004 (0.846). In both cohorts AUC values were higher (0.77–0.85) for the two hybrid grading systems compared to WHO 1973 or WHO 2004 (0.72–0.82). Similar results were seen on analysis of EFS. The data support the use of a hybrid three-tier or four-tier grading system to improve stratification of NMIBC patients.
Why did formerly independent Chilean judges, trained under and appointed by democratic governments, facilitate and condone the illiberal, antidemocratic, and anti-legal policies of the Pinochet ...regime? Challenging the assumption that adjudication in non-democratic settings is fundamentally different and less puzzling than it is in democratic regimes, this 2007 book offers a longitudinal analysis of judicial behavior, demonstrating striking continuity in judicial performance across regimes in Chile. The work explores the relevance of judges' personal policy preferences, social class, and legal philosophy, but argues that institutional factors best explain the persistent failure of judges to take stands in defense of rights and rule of law principles. Specifically, the institutional structure and ideology of the Chilean judiciary, grounded in the ideal of judicial apoliticism, furnished judges with professional understandings and incentives that left them unequipped and disinclined to take stands in defense of liberal democratic principles, before, during, and after the authoritarian interlude.

Is credit expansion a sign of desirable financial deepening or the prelude to an inevitable bust? We study this question in modern US data using a structural VAR model of 10 monthly frequency ...variables, identified by heteroskedasticity. Negative reduced-form responses of output to credit growth are caused by endogenous monetary policy response to credit expansion shocks. On average, credit and output growth remain positively associated. “Financial stress” shocks to credit spreads cause declines in output and credit levels. Neither credit aggregates nor spreads provide much advance warning of the 2008–2009 crisis, but spreads improve within-crisis forecasts.
The media and the press in particular played an important role in the dissemination and political and ideological confrontation that occurred in Chile in the sixties and seventies of the twentieth ...century. In this sense, El Mercurio newspaper, as the main representative of the hegemonic groups and liberal thinking, supported the 1973 coup. While the act of this medium is well known, it is relevant and necessary to take a look at the procedure that had other newspapers, but at regional or local scale. This paper gives a comprehensive overview of the actions taken by El Sur newspaper from Concepcion about the September 11, 1973, the level of information provided and the position adopted once the intervention military in the city of Concepción occurred.
