Actual and systematic application of environmental assessment in the Autonomous Region of the Aosta Valley (Italy) since 1991 enables to analyse a sizeable number of studies accumulated over a decade ...of experience and to study their evolution in time. The peculiarity of these studies, something quite rare in Italy, is the fact that they are both standard EIA on individual projects and SEA studies, since they were carried out on urban planning techniques. This research analyses a statistical sample with two groups, initial-wave studies (1991–1992) and more recent ones (1997–1998), by means of characteristic profiles emphasising both content and differences. To better correlate the research and its regional context, we present a brief geoeconomic description and a concise summary of local provisions on the subject of environmental impact evaluation. The results of the analysis, done with innovative multivariate methods for environmental reviewing, are discussed at three progressive levels of conceptual investigation, also to underline the importance of adopting a set-oriented perspective. Having emphasised both limitations and scope of the adopted method, the final conclusions include some suggestions on to improve study management on a regional scale.

The paper reports on yield and quality of milk produced by Aosta Red Pied, Aosta Black Pied and Aosta Chestnut, reared in ten alpine sites of Valle d´Aosta region (Italy). Traits of individual milk ...sampled in representative phases of Summer grazing were studied. The results confirm the high level of adaptability of dairy cows also in particularly critical weather conditions (Summer 2003); nevertheless, the milk fatty acid profile shows a significant drop of PUFAs when quality of pasture herbage worsens.
Protection is of vital importance to human populations and activities in the European Alps. In the short to medium term, failure to manage alpine protective forests leads to intolerable risks for ...people who live and make a living in alpine valleys. The most important features of a protective forest are its stability properties, that is, its ability to carry out its protective function reliably and continuously and, if this is achieved, its ability to maintain its structure and vitality in the face of internal and external influences. Since maintaining and improving stability properties is costly and labor intensive, the objective of interventions should be an acceptable—rather than an ideal—degree of stability in order to ensure the functions required of the protective forest over a 20–50 year period. Such interventions are collectively referred to as minimal tending. A case study of the Ban de Ville forest in Courmayeur (Aosta Valley, Italy) illustrates aspects of silvicultural planning. Only one third of the Ban de Ville forest was found to be acceptably stable. The main causes of instability were unsuitable species composition, simplified vertical structure and cover, presence of Ips typographus and Heterobasidion annosum, and presence of high densities of wild ungulates. Measures to improve stability properties aimed to increase the presence of larch among a homogenous stand of Norway spruce and gradually establish a multilayered, small group structure.

The results of veterinarian visits carried out on 5,147 Valdostana breed cows in 508 herds included in the technical assistance program for fertility improvement were analyzed. A logistic regression ...model was fitted in order to evaluate the effect of some risk factors on the following reproductive diseases: anoestrus, follicular cysts, luteal cysts, persistent corpus luteum, metritis, acyclic ovaries, pyometritis. Results show that risk of metritis is higher in herds with milk yield between 3,000 and 4,000 kg. Furthermore, in Valdostana Red Pied, characterized by a higher milk yield compared to Valdostana Black Pied and Castana, the risk of anoestrus, persistent corpus luteum and acyclic ovaries is higher.

This paper describes the employment of lichens as bioindicators to estimate the atmospheric pollution generated by the intra-alpine city of Aosta. The Italian version of the Swiss method was used to ...collect data from Populus nigra. A total of 29 epiphytic lichen species were identified. This study has shown that the most polluted zones are those of the built-up parts of the city of Aosta due to the combined effects of heavy traffic and domestic heating. On the valley floor, there is a more marked improvement from Aosta to the west, since temperature inversion is responsible for longer persistence of pollutants to the east of the city. It was also found that Phaeophyscia orbicularis can be regarded as an indicator of atmospheric pollution in the Aosta area. Evaluation of its presence alone at brief intervals is thus a useful of keeping the situation under control
