The current work is aimed at isolating and identifying new Entomopathogenic bacterium (EPB) strains associated with
Steinernema feltiae
and assessing the EPB’s biocontrol potential on
Aphis punicae
...and
Aphis illinoisensis
adults in the laboratory. From
S. feltiae
, five bacterial isolates were isolated and molecularly characterized.
Lysinibacillus xylanilyticus
strain TU-2,
Lysinibacillus xylanilyticus
strain BN-13,
Serratia liquefaciens
strain TU-6,
Stenotrophomonas tumulicola
strain T5916-2-1b, and
Pseudochrobactrum saccharolyticum
strain CCUG are the strains. Pathogenicity tests demonstrated that bacterial cells were more toxic against the two aphid species than bacterial cell-free supernatants.
S. tumulicola
strain T5916-2-1b cells and filtrate were reported to have the strongest potential to kill
A. punicae
and
A. illinoisensis
individuals within 6 h after treatment, with 100% mortality of both insects 24 and 48 h after treatment. Based on the results of the study, it looked like endogenous
Steinernema
-associated EPB could be used directly as a biocontrol agent for
A. punicae
and
A. illinoisensis
.
Aphids are serious pests of a wide range of agricultural crops, including pomegranates and grapevines. In addition, due to the negative environmental impacts of chemical insecticides, these pests are ...developing important resistance against aphicides. Therefore, one alternative method to control aphids is the use of essential oils (EO). The present study aimed to evaluate the insecticidal activity of Citrus aurantium and C. reticulata peel EO at different concentrations and with different exposure periods to pomegranate and grapevine aphids, Aphis punicae and A. illinoisensis via the topical application method under laboratory conditions. The results reveal that C. aurantium L. EO had greater toxicity against pomegranate and grapevine aphids, with LC50 of 0.37 and 0.82 μL/mL, respectively, at 48 h after application. The highest repellence effect was estimated for C. aurantium EO, at 2.5 μL/cm2, on A. punicae, with a value of 100% after an exposure time of 3 h, in contrast to the 88% repellence estimated for A. illinoisensis. The GC-MS investigation of both essential oils identified limonene, 3-carene, pinene, and p-cymene as active substances that could be attributed to the effects observed. Overall, our results offer a potential tool to control the two aphid species and could help in the development of integrated insect management in pomegranate and grapevine fields.
The endophytic fungus,
Beauveria bassiana
has been found to occur endophytically in hundreds of plant species tissues and has been inoculated for establishment in different plants. It has negative ...effect on piercing-sucking insects in grapevine plants. Thus, the present study aimed to detect the endophytic fungus,
B. bassiana
throughout ITS genes analysis in the grapevine plant,
Vitis venifera
cv. Taify and assess its potential for controlling the grapevine aphid,
Aphis illinoisensis
Shimer (Hemiptera: Aphididae). The obtained 5 isolates were DNA sequenced for ITS region. Data analysis showed that there were 2 different isolates (accession number: MN900613 for isolate Bb-Taif1 and MN900614 for isolate Bb-Taif2). The values of LC
50
were 6.041 × 10
4
, 3.199 × 10
5
spores/ml while those of LC
90
were 6.13 × 10
6
and 7.474 × 10
7
spores/ml after 3 days of treatment by Bb-Taif1 and Bb-Taif2, respectively. These values showed that the virulence of Bb-Taif1 isolate was higher in its efficacy than the Bb-Taif2 isolate. Further investigations are needed to evaluate its efficacy on other piercing sucking or chewing insect pests throughout conidia spraying, soil inoculation, and/or root immersion for grapevine plants.
Fourteen species of aphids (Hemiptera: Aphidoidea) are recorded as new to Saudi Arabia. These are: Aphis coreopsidis (Thomas, 1878); Aphis illinoisensis Shimer, 1866; Baizongia pistaceae (Linnaeus, ...1767); Capitophorus elaeagni (del Guercio, 1894); Dysaphis plantaginea (Passerini, 1860); Eucarazzia elegans (Ferrari, 1872); Geoica lucifuga (Zehntner, 1897); Hayhurstia atriplicis (Linnaeus, 1761); Macrosiphoniella absinthii (Linnaeus, 1758); Macrosiphoniella sanborni (Gillette, 1908); Smynthurodes betae Westwood, 1849; Uroleucon cichorii (Koch, 1855), and Wahlgreniella nervata (Gillette, 1908). Among these, three species, i.e. A . coreopsidis , A . illinoisensis , and W . nervata are alien species.
Apterous and alate viviparous females of the grapevine aphid species, Aphis illinoisensis Shimer (Hemiptera: Aphididae) were recorded for the first time in Egypt on grapes, Vitis vinifera L., at ...Sharkia and Dakhalia Governorates in 2012. Primary and hyperparasitoid species associated with the aphid species were reported. PUBLICATION ABSTRACT
A summary of the study of Aphis illinoisensis Shimer on grapes, Vitis vinifera in the Mediterranean area brings references and new findings on its distribution in Crete/Greece, Turkey, Northern ...Cyprus, Malta, Israel, Montenegro, Tunisia, Algeria and Libya. Parasitoids of A. illinoisensis were only occasionally found (Aphidius matricariae Hal. – Cyprus, Turkey, Greece; Aphidius colemani Viereck – Libya; Lysiphlebus testaceipes Cress. – Algeria). Of the native species, i.e. A. colemani, and others similar to the native species, L. testaceipes seem to be a promising biocontrol agent within the framework of an ecologically friendly management in the area. Given the evidence of its expansion, A. illinoisensis is expected to expand further in several directions from the recently documented invaded area to all the grape-growing areas of the Mediterranean and even those of South-Eastern and Central Europe.
