Russia, Lieven concludes, entered the war for reasons of security (a response to the perceived threat of Teutonic expansionism), of interest (a desire to consolidate her influence in the Balkans and ...control the Straits), and of identity (a defence of her status as a great power - a real necessity in an age of social Darwinism - and as the leader of fellow Orthodox Slavs).\n Indeed, disorder, insecurity, violence, chaos, and anarchy, as exemplified by the Cossacks, best described the harsh reality of inhumane military assaults upon civilian populations. Other factors, in addition to increasing challenges that originated on the borderlands and the centrifugal dynamism of national self-determination/decolonization, explain the collapse of the tsarist regime. Besides the might of the German army, pre-war conditions, such as the rebuilding of the armed forces that had not been completed by 1914 and an autocratic ruler always somewhat suspicious of the reformist agenda of an emerging civil society, also contributed to the downfall.
