EN The grocery retail sector in Spain is one of the most laggards at a volume level in terms of electronic commerce. Other countries have a much more efficient operative thanks to innovative systems ...that allow them to absorb a much higher volume of orders on a daily basis and, therefore, achieve a greater profit eventually. Other sectors within the Spanish business concentrate a higher volume of sales made online, which would be the aim to be achieved by the sector analysed in this study. For this reason, in this project, the goal is to redefine the picking process to try to eliminate as much as possible the inefficiencies triggered by the traditional procedure. The proposal is developed around a distribution centre that will allow, in terms of capacity, the installation of the necessary automated storage systems. Therefore, efforts will be made to reduce the lead time regarding daily orders, while reducing operating costs. To achieve these results, different preliminary analysis will be carried out. First, the situation will be detailed and characterized within the groceries retail sector, providing data about sales volume, consumers profile, upcoming trends, and main areas for improvement. This is done in order to help the reader understand the importance of searching for alternatives which optimize the process. Next, an analysis of the traditional picking process will be done, using a time measurement of the process and also considering the results of the survey conducted. After that, the products are grouped by different categories of whether they are dry, fresh or frozen, obtaining the number of references in each of the groups and the daily demand for each of them. With this information and the calculations made, the investment is determined to be around € 2,840,000. Finally, economic indicators such as NPV, IRR and the period of return on investment are calculated, giving an insight to whether the project is viable or not.

We review the macroeconomic and microeconomic impacts of e-business on organizations. E-business improves the economic efficiency of national economies through greater capital formation and long-run ...efficiency gains. E-business affects many aspects of the economy, from international trade to monetary and fiscal policies. At the microeconomic level, we use Porter’s Five Forces to organize our discussion of how e-business changes the creation of value and its division among market players. ICT affects industry through many channels and at many levels, from how inputs are purchased to how final goods and services are sold and delivered. The corporate strategist must consider how e-business may change the nature of rivalry among the competitors. Changes in upstream and downstream interactions in the market and expanded opportunities for substitutes and potential entrants also influence strategy. Thus, e-business can alter strategy by changing the nature of entry threats, suppliers’ power, buyers’ power, threats from substitutes, and rivalry among existing firms. We discuss empirical results from the literature wherever possible to illustrate the importance of e-business for a firm’s strategy. We close with a brief look at e-business and non-profit organizations.
Web retailing is expected to grow at aggressive rates in future years. One of the most important factors that is slowing down this growth is the lack of trust of potential customers. So, as ...transactions through the internet develop and mature, success will largely be dependent on gaining and0501ntaining this trust. It has been suggested that the quality of the user interface of the Web site is a determinant of the initial establishment of trust. In this article, we describe a study where 66 subjects were asked to perform some predefined book purchasing task in a series of sites with varying interface quality. We found a strong relationship between interface quality and trust. We also found some components of user interface quality to be more important than others and discuss the implications for Web site design.
This report addresses the establishment of a centralized information and communication technology (ICT) platform for the microfinance sector in Nepal. It has been shown from international experience ...that ICT improves the efficiency, transparency, and outreach of microfinance institutions (MFIs) and reduces operational costs. There is an opportunity in Nepal to implement similar solutions, and this report provides information on these solutions and offers recommendations for implementing them in Nepal. The microfinance sector in Nepal has many players, but these players have shown few real successes. The sector is largely unsustainable, subsidy driven, and fragmented to the extent that it might not meet the real needs of the country. This report presents a new paradigm for introducing ICT in the microfinance sector of Nepal. The centralized technology platform was chosen as opposed to telecom-led platforms due to its ability to resolve most of the pertinent challenges that Nepal's microfinance sector faces. The paradigm can help remove most of the constraints that have limited the growth of MFIs and kept them from becoming sustainable, moving out to remote and rural areas, and providing more loans to those that need them. In the traditional paradigm, MFIs acquire ICT in an ad hoc fashion and are able to use it only partially to automate their operations.
The World Bank legal review: law, equity, and development, volume two, is a publication for policy makers and their advisers, attorneys, and other professionals engaged in the field of international ...development. It offers a combination of legal scholarship, lessons from experience, legal developments, and recent research on the many ways in which the application of law and the improvement of justice systems promote poverty reduction, economic development, and the rule of law. In keeping with the theme of the World Development Report 2006: equity and development, and following the success of the World Bank Group's legal forum on 'law, equity, and development' in December 2005, volume two of the World Bank legal review focuses on issues of equity and development. The volume draws together some of the key ideas of the Legal Forum, including articles by many of its distinguished participants, and explores the role of equity in the development process, highlighting how legal and regulatory frameworks and equitable justice systems can do much to level the playing field in the political, economic, and socio-cultural domains, as well as how they can reinforce existing inequalities.

The report comprises two volumes, the Executive Summary and Policy Recommendations (Volume 1), and the Background Documents (Volume 2), providing the scope, and organization of the study as follows. ...The first chapter assesses the performance of Chile in the knowledge economy, where knowledge is a critical factor for competitiveness and growth. It examines progress to date, and remaining challenges with respect to three factors - the knowledge variables: 1) the economic incentive and institutional regime; 2) science and technology; and, 3) the education system. The second chapter looks at Chile's Information and Communication Technology (ICT) - the infrastructure of the knowledge economy. The third chapter evaluates the potential use of ICT by local firms, with special focus on micro, small and medium businesses (MSMBs), which represent the bulk of the Chilean productive sector. The focus of the overall analysis is on the role of Knowledge in improving the productivity of the private sector. The study's main focus on improving productivity of the private, rather than the public sector, is motivated by the fact that a recent Bank Public Modernization loan, addresses key issues in improving the effectiveness, and efficiency of the Chilean public administration. It is highlighted that the recent growth of the Chilean economy, and positive short-term outlook, should not deter the Government from embarking on further reforms aimed at improving the productivity of the private sector. Chile may want to encourage microeconomic reforms supporting private sector development. Recommendations include the creation of innovative businesses, a single contact point for business registration, and a more flexible labor market, so as to reduce the costs of labor, increase employment, and that of firm's productivity. Moreover, the Government should review, and rationalize its programs in support of science, technology, and innovation, encouraging private participation in science, to ensure an adequate, relevant research, and, promote further reforms to improve the quality of education. Such policy agenda will require public-private partnerships to enhance productivity, and growth, which will require rethinking some economic principles.
