We give series expansions for the Barnes multiple zeta functions in terms of rational functions whose numerators are complex-order Bernoulli polynomials, and whose denominators are linear. We also ...derive corresponding rational expansions for Dirichlet L-functions and multiple log gamma functions in terms of higher order Bernoulli polynomials. These expansions naturally express many of the well-known properties of these functions. As corollaries many special values of these transcendental functions are expressed as series of higher order Bernoulli numbers.

From the earliest reviews of 'Nightwood' by Graham Greene and T.S. Eliot, Barnes criticism has repeatedly acknowledged the novel's affinity with seventeenth century aesthetic forms. Not until Monika ...Kaup's 2005 article, in which she examines Barnes' writing in the context of a Latin-American baroque, and suggests 'Ladies Almanack' as a parody of baroque hagiography, was this connection given detailed consideration. This article will examine the forms and techniques of 'Nightwood' in the context of the German seventeenth century Trauerspiel, or play of mourning, placing Barnes' writing within a broader European baroque context. In an early section of discarded manuscript for the novel, Barnes introduces the idea of a 'baroque sentence', a form of expression characteristic of a particular era. Paying close attention to Walter Benjamin's study 'The Origin of German Tragic Drama', I will consider the character of Robin Vote as a signifier situated between symbol and allegory, Barnes' preoccupation with the fractured human body, and the enigmatic figure of Dr O'Connor. If 'Nightwood' is to be considered as a modern counterpart to the Trauerspiel in many of its details, I will conclude by asking how does this affect Barnes' identity as a modern writer?

This study investigates the activities of the Austin Friars in England in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries regarding the sale of expurgatory services. Through an analysis of their letters ...of confraternity and indulgences, this study argues that around the end of the fifteenth century, the Austin Friars experienced a change in attitude in the sale of their religious services. They exponentially increased their efforts in selling indulgences and letters of confraternity and in advertising their popular Scala Coeli services, an attitude that reached its zenith in 1516 when Pope Leo X licensed the Austin Friars to sell and promote a lucrative plenary indulgence. This change has significant consequences for considerations of the actions of English Augustinian reformers in the sixteenth century, primarily Robert Barnes, whose criticisms of clerical wealth are put into relief when examined within this monastic context.
Abstract The role of altered activity of nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) in specific aspects of motivated behavior and learning and memory was examined in mice lacking the p50 subunit of the NF-κB/rel ...transcription factor family. Nfkb1-deficient mice are unable to produce p50 and show specific susceptibilities to infections and inflammatory challenges, but the behavioral phenotype of such mice has been largely unexamined, owing in large part to the lack of understanding of the role of NF-κB in nervous system function. Here we show that Nfkb1 (p50) knockout mice more rapidly learned to find the hidden platform in the Morris water maze than did wildtype mice. The rise in plasma corticosterone levels after the maze test was greater in p50 knockout than in wildtype mice. In the less stressful Barnes maze, which tests similar kinds of spatial learning, the p50 knockout mice performed similarly to control mice. Adrenalectomy with corticosterone replacement eliminated the differences between p50 knockout and wildtype mice in the water maze. Knockout mice showed increased levels of basal anxiety in the open-field and light/dark box tests, suggesting that their enhanced escape latency in the water maze was due to activation of the stress (hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal) axis leading to elevated corticosterone production by strongly but not mildly anxiogenic stimuli. The results suggest that, as in the immune system, p50 in the nervous system normally serves to dampen NF-κB-mediated intracellular activities, which are manifested physiologically through elevated stress responses to aversive stimuli and behaviorally in the facilitated escape performance in learning tasks.

The continued production of new dentate granule cells throughout life has led to the idea that neurogenesis critically modulates hippocampal memory function. Consistent with this view, many studies ...have shown that experimental reduction of adult neurogenesis impairs hippocampal memory formation. However, impairments are not universally observed following suppression of adult neurogenesis. A new article by Urbach et al. falls into this latter category. A global deletion of the cyclin D2-a cell cycle regulation gene-induces a profound reduction in adult neurogenesis. Yet, despite this reduction, this knockout mouse was able to acquire a hippocampus-dependent spatial memory normally. These results suggest that ongoing adult neurogenesis is not necessary for many forms of hippocampus-dependent learning, and in this commentary, I discuss the implications of these types of results for the field.
