Anton Bruckner's Eighth Symphony (1890), one of the last of the great Romantic symphonies, is a grandly complex masterpiece. Its critical reception has been fascinatingly contentious. Its music, at ...once extensive and distilled, directly confronts the problem of the symphony after Beethoven and after Wagner. This book explores this many-faceted work from several angles. It documents the complicated and often misunderstood history of the symphony's composition and revision and offers an accessible guide to its musical design. It demonstrates, by means of a study of well-known recordings, how performance styles have evolved in this century. It also revisits the conventional wisdom about the various versions and editions of the symphony and comes to some provocative new conclusions.

Culmination of the Symphonic Mass William Weinert Professor of Conducting and Director of Choral Activities Eastman School of Music wweinert@esm.rochester.edu The decade between 1864 and 1874 ...wit-nessed the composition of several of the most significant large-scale sacred works of the Romantic period: The Mass in F Minor (some-times known as "the Great") is the last, the most extended, and the finest of Bruckner's masses, and it occupies a significant place both in the evolution of Bruckner's mature style and in the development of the symphonic mass in the Romantic period. The Mass in F Minor: Style and Structure Bruckner's final mass, the Mass in F Minor, was writ-ten between September 1867 and September 1868, immediately following his nervous breakdown in the summer of 1867. According to Hans Redlich, the Mass in F Minor was "conceived as a work to introducé the composer Bruckner as a mature artis-tic personality to musical Vienna.
Director of Choral Activities Southern Arkansas University September 4, 2024, marks the two hun-dredth anniversary of the birth of Austrian composer Anton Bruckner (1824-1896), who is well known for ...his symphonies and sacred Latin motets such as Locus iste and Os justi In addition to these often-performed sacred works, Bruckner composed almost forty secular part-songs for Germanic male singing societ-ies known as Liedertafel (literally "song table"). The German poet, professor, and literary historian Robert Eduard Prutz created a scène filled with significant melancholy juxtaposed with comfort and rebirth.6 The poem consists of four stanzas in iambic tetrameter7 and describes a "wondrous tone" that is from a "dear Mother's mouth/A friendly comforting song" According to the poet, this song has the power to remove anguish and return joy to life that Prutz compares to the return of spring The return of joy, much like the return of the warm sunshine of spring, sprouts new joys and rejuve-nates the weary soul. ...this progression depends on the linear resolution of tones through voice leading and not traditional harmonie functions. Through the power of this "friendly comforting song," life has returned like "the May of life," and the soul has been healed and is returned to youth.

The present study surveys the major influences on Bruckner's choral output and analyzes several representative motets in an attempt to spark interest in the performance of these neglected miniatures. ...Bruckner as Singer and Choral Conductor In 1837, Bruckner's mother enrolled her thirteen-year-old son in the monastery school of St. Florian. For the choir's anniversary performance on May 10, 1868, the composer wrote Inueni Da-vid, a motet for four-voice male chorus and trombones.2 As a conductor Bruckner was also able to make significant contacts with other important musical figures such as Franz Liszt, who became a supporter, and Eduard Hanslick, who after some ini-tial support became the composer's nemesis.3 Bruckner and the Cecilian Movement One of the central features of the Romantic move-ment was an interest in the past. Locus iste (SATB) First performed on October 29, 1869, Locus iste was written for the dedication of a new chapel in Linz, hon-oring Father Otto Loidol, who was active at the Benedictine Monastery at Kremsünster.7 Liturgically the work is a gradual "For the Dedication of a Church."

? More generally, why are some individuals in a privileged position when it comes to changing musical works and other artifacts, such as novels, films, and games? I give a view of musical works that helps to answer these questions. Musical works, on this view, are created abstract objects with no parts. The paradigmatic changes that musical works undergo are socially determined normative changes in how they should be performed. Due to contingent social practices, Bruckner, but not I, can change how his symphony should be performed. Were social practices radically different, I would be able to change his symphony. This view extends to abstract artifacts beyond music, including novels, films, words, games, and corporations.
Bruckner-not recognized as an ally by either side-initially addressed his remarks to Wilhelm Tappert, an apologist for program music; when addressing the poet Paul Heyse, it was in his own defense ...against a critique by Wagnerian Heinrich Porges, who had described Bruckner as an epigonic composer of absolute music. Studying the harmonic structures of a musical work and exploring its origins is one of the main tasks of traditional musicology. Since the advent of computer technologies, new tools for musical ...analysis emerged to gain new perspectives on well-known compositions. In the field of digital musical editions, the markup language MEI (Music Encoding Initiative) plays a prominent role for encoding musical notation with a musicological demand. This paper presents the current state of the project "Digital Music Analysis with MEI using the Example of Anton Bruckner's Compositional Studies". Its aim is to encode the "Kitzler Study book" written by Bruckner and to present it in a digital Edition. Also, the project explores the capability of MEI for an automatic or half-automatic harmonic analysis.
