The mythic status of the Oxbridge man at the height of the British Empire
continues to persist in depictions of this small, elite world as an ideal of
athleticism, intellectualism, tradition, and ...ritual. In his investigation of the
origins of this myth, Paul R. Deslandes explores the everyday life of undergraduates
at Oxford and Cambridge to examine how they experienced manhood. He considers
phenomena such as the dynamics of the junior common room, the competition of exams,
and the social and athletic obligations of intercollegiate boat races to show how
rituals, activities, relationships, and discourses all contributed to gender
formation. Casting light on the lived experience of undergraduates, Oxbridge Men
shows how an influential brand of British manliness was embraced, altered, and
occasionally rejected as these students grew from boys into men.
This collection of essays explores the history of the book in pre-modern South Asia looking at the production, circulation, fruition and preservation of manuscripts in different areas and across ...time. Edited by the team of the Cambridge-based Sanskrit Manuscripts Project and including contributions of the researchers who collaborated with it, it covers a wide range of topics related to South Asian manuscript culture: from the material dimension (palaeography, layout, decoration) and the complicated interactions of manuscripts with printing in late medieval Tibet and in modern Tamil Nadu, to reading, writing, editing and educational practices, from manuscripts as sources for the study of religious, literary and intellectual traditions, to the creation of collections in medieval India and Cambodia (one major centre of the so-called Sanskrit cosmopolis), and the formation of the Cambridge collections in the colonial period. The contributions reflect the variety of idioms, literary genres, religious movements, and social actors (intellectuals, scribes, patrons) of ancient South Asia, as well as the variety of approaches, interests and specialisms of the authors, and their impassionate engagement with manuscripts.
Arsenic, ubiquitous in various industrial processes and consumer products, presents both essential functions and considerable toxicity risks, driving extensive research into safer applications. Our ...investigation, drawing from 7182 arsenic-containing molecules in the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD), outlines their diverse bonding patterns. Notably, 51% of these molecules exhibit cyclic connections, while 49% display acyclic ones. Arsenic forms eight distinct bonding types with other elements, with significant interactions observed, particularly with phenyl rings, O3 and F6 moieties. Top interactions involve carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, sulfur, and arsenic itself. We meticulously evaluated average bond lengths under three conditions: without an R-factor cut-off, with R-factor ≤0.075, and with R-factor ≤0.05, supporting the credibility of our results. Comparative analysis with existing literature data enriches our understanding of arsenic's bonding behaviour. Our findings illuminate the structural attributes, molecular coordination, geometry, and bond lengths of arsenic with 68 diverse atoms, enriching our comprehension of arsenic chemistry. These revelations not only offer a pathway for crafting innovative and safer arsenic-based compounds but also foster the evolution of arsenic detoxification mechanisms, tackling pivotal health and environmental challenges linked to arsenic exposure across different contexts.

•Examining 7182 arsenic crystal structures in the CSD revealed eight bonding patterns, both cyclic and acyclic.•Arsenic's interactions with 68 elements, focusing particularly on bond lengths with As, C, F, N, O, and S, were identified.•Statistical analysis of bond lengths using R-factor thresholds contributes to the development of new arsenic-based drugs.•Future prospects in arsenic interactions for global medical and environmental applications were highlighted.
This book, first published in 2000, draws on the great wealth of associations of street-names in Cambridge. It is not a dictionary, but it provides a series of entries on such topics as the ...Reformation, George IV and his wife, twentieth-century British scientists, businessmen, Elizabethan times, medieval Cambridge, mayors, millers, and builders. It includes hermits and coal merchants, field marshals and laundresses, martyrs and bombers, unscrupulous politicians and the founder of a Christian community, Cromwell and Newton, an Anglo-Saxon queen and the discoverer of Uranus - all people who lived in or often visited Cambridge. The ancient Stourbridge fair is included, along with castles and boat-races, sewage pumps and the original Hobson of 'Hobson's Choice'. Who was St Tibb? Where did Dick Turpin hide? Where was the medieval takeaway? Unlike earlier works, this is a history of everybody for everybody.
With the revelation that Facebook handed over personally identifiable information of more than 87 million users to Cambridge Analytica, it is now imperative that comprehensive privacy policy laws be ...developed. Technologists, researchers, and innovators should meaningfully contribute to the development of these policies.
In the aftermath of the Cambridge Analytica controversy, social media platform providers such as Facebook and Twitter have severely restricted access to platform data via their Application ...Programming Interfaces (APIs). This has had a particularly critical effect on the ability of social media researchers to investigate phenomena such as abuse, hate speech, trolling, and disinformation campaigns, and to hold the platforms to account for the role that their affordances and policies might play in facilitating such dysfunction. Alternative data access frameworks, such as Facebook's partnership with the controversial Social Science One initiative, represent an insufficient replacement for fully functional APIs, and the platform providers' actions in responding to the Cambridge Analytica scandal raise suspicions that they have instrumentalised it to actively frustrate critical, independent, public interest scrutiny by scholars. Building on a critical review of Facebook's public statements through its own platforms and the mainstream media, and of the scholarly responses these have drawn, this article outlines the societal implications of the 'APIcalypse', and reviews potential options for scholars in responding to it.

Myopia is one of the most prevalent disorders of the eye. Higher myopia is associated with comorbidities that increase risks of severe and irreversible loss of vision, such as retinal detachment, ...subretinal neovascularization, dense cataract, and glaucoma. In recent years, reports from population-based prevalence studies carried out in various geographical areas now give a clear picture of the current distribution of refractive error. The scarcity of data from well-designed longitudinal cohort studies is still yet to be addressed. These studies have confirmed the previous data indicating that prevalence of refractive error varies according to ethnicity and geographic regions, and also point to an increase in myopia prevalence over the past half-century. The problem is particularly pronounced in affluent, industrialised areas of East Asia. Environmental risk factors for myopia related to socioeconomic status and lifestyle have been identified. The past decade has seen a greater understanding of the molecular biological mechanisms that determine refractive error, giving further support to the belief that myopia is the result of a complex interaction between genetic predisposition and environmental exposures. This review summarizes data on the prevalence, incidence, progression, associations, risk factors, and impact from recent epidemiological studies on myopia.
Education is one solution to shape Indonesia into a developed country. Through education, quality and competent human resources can be produced. This naturally stems from designing a quality learning ...curriculum to foster a generation of high-caliber individuals for the nation. The quality of the international curriculum has gained global recognition and is complemented by teachings following the principles of Prophet Muhammad SAW, implemented through mosque-based learning. This research aims to describe the implementation of the Cambridge International Primary Program, which carries implications for mosque-based learning culture. The research is conducted at MI Al-Akbar Mosque in Surabaya. It employs a descriptive qualitative research methodology utilizing data collection techniques including interviews, observations, and documentation. Six research informants participated, including the madrasa head, curriculum coordinator, Cambridge primary coordinator, regular class teacher, CIP class teacher, and Islamic religious education subject teacher. Data analysis involves collecting, condensing, displaying data, and drawing conclusions/verifying data. The research findings demonstrate that Cambridge Primary was effectively and efficiently implemented under the provisions of the Al-Akbar National Mosque in Surabaya and Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE). The program spans grades 1 to 6, focusing on subjects such as science, mathematics, and English, with evaluations tailored to each level.

Keratoconus (KC) is a common degenerative condition that frequently results in visual loss with an onset typically in early adulthood. It is the single most common reason for keratoplasty in the ...developed world. The cause and underlying pathological mechanism are unknown, but both environmental and genetic factors are thought to contribute to the development of the disease. Various strategies have been employed to address the gap in our understanding of this complex disease, with the expectation that over time more sophisticated therapies will be developed. In this review we summarise our current knowledge of the aetiology and risk factors associated with KC.

When Jay Keyser arrived at MIT in 1977 to head theDepartment of Linguistics and Philosophy, he writes, he "felt like a fishthat had been introduced to water for the first time." At MIT, acolleague ...grabbed him by the lapels to discuss dark matter; Noam Chomsky calledhim "boss" (double SOB spelled backward?); and engaging in conflictresolution made him feel like "a marriage counselor trying to reconcile aunion between a Jehovah's witness and a vampire."In Mens et Mania, Keyserrecounts his academic and administrative adventures during a career of morethan thirty years. Keyserdescribes the administrative side of his MIT life, not only as department headbut also as Associate Provost and Special Assistant to the Chancellor. Keyserhad to run a department ("budgets were like horoscopes") andnegotiate student grievances -- from thelegality of showing Deep Throat in a dormitory to theuproar caused by the arrests of students for antiapartheid demonstrations.Keyser also describes a visiting Japanese delegation horrified by the disrepairof the linguistics department offices (Chomsky tells them "Our motto is:Physically shabby. Intellectually first class."); convincing a studentnot to jump off the roof of the Green Building; and recent attempts to look atMIT through a corporate lens. And he explains the special faculty-student bondat MIT: the faculty sees the students as themselves thirty years earlier. Keyser observes that MIT is hard toget into and even harder to leave, for faculty as well as for students. Writingabout retirement, Keyser quotes the song Groucho Marx sang in AnimalCrackers as he was leaving a party -- "Hello, I mustbe going." Students famously say "Tech is hell." Keyser says,"It's been a helluva party." This entertaining andthought-provoking memoir will make readers glad that Keyser hasn't quiteleft.
