Charlemagne never traveled farther east than Italy, but by the mid-tenth century a story had begun to circulate about the friendly alliances that the emperor had forged while visiting Jerusalem and ...Constantinople. This story gained wide currency throughout the Middle Ages, appearing frequently in chronicles, histories, imperial decrees, and hagiographies-even in stained-glass windows and vernacular verse and prose. InEmperor of the World, Anne A. Latowsky traces the curious history of this myth, revealing how the memory of the Frankish Emperor was manipulated to shape the institutions of kingship and empire in the High Middle Ages.
The legend incorporates apocalyptic themes such as the succession of world monarchies at the End of Days and the prophecy of the Last Roman Emperor. Charlemagne's apocryphal journey to the East increasingly resembled the eschatological final journey of the Last Emperor, who was expected to end his reign in Jerusalem after reuniting the Roman Empire prior to the Last Judgment. Instead of relinquishing his imperial dignity and handing the rule of a united Christendom over to God as predicted, this Charlemagne returns to the West to commence his reign. Latowsky finds that the writers who incorporated this legend did so to support, or in certain cases to criticize, the imperial pretentions of the regimes under which they wrote. New versions of the myth would resurface at times of transition and during periods marked by strong assertions of Roman-style imperial authority and conflict with the papacy, most notably during the reigns of Henry IV and Frederick Barbarossa. Latowsky removes Charlemagne's encounters with the East from their long-presumed Crusading context and shows how a story that began as a rhetorical commonplace of imperial praise evolved over the centuries as an expression of Christian Roman universalism.

Wendy Marie Hoofnagle explores the Carolingian aspects of Norman influence in England after the Norman Conquest, arguing that the Normans’ literature of kingship envisioned government as a form of imperial rule modeled in many ways on the glories of Charlemagne and his reign. She argues that the aggregate of historical and literary ideals that developed about Charlemagne after his death influenced certain aspects of the Normans’ approach to ruling, including a program of conversion through “allurement,” political domination through symbolic architecture and propaganda, and the creation of a sense of the royal forest as an extension of the royal court.

Haiti Fights Back: The Life and Legacy of Charlemagne Péralte is the first US scholarly examination of the politician and caco leader (guerrilla fighter) who fought against the US military occupation ...of Haiti. The occupation lasted close to two decades, from 1915-1934. Alexis argues for the importance of documenting resistance while exploring the occupation’s mechanics and its imperialism. She takes us to Haiti, exploring the sites of what she labels as resistance zones, including Péralte’s hometown of Hinche and the nation’s large port areas--Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haïtien. Alexis offers a new reading of US military archival sources that record Haitian protests as banditry. Haiti Fights Back illuminates how Péralte launched a political movement, and meticulously captures how Haitian women and men resisted occupation through silence, military battles, and writings. She locates and assembles rare, multilingual primary sources from traditional repositories, living archives (oral stories), and artistic representations in Haiti and the United States. The interdisciplinary work draws on legislation, cacos’ letters, newspapers, and murals, offering a unique examination of Péralte’s life (1885-1919) and the significance of his legacy through the 21st century. Boone discusses the photograph of Charlemagne Peralte. The Peralte photograph is a meticulously arranged image, the result of a series of choices made for documentary and symbolic purposes. The ...marines tightly fastened the naked body to the unhinged door at a height that allows the dead body to lean against the door and the head to appear upright and cocked slightly to one side. The door, in turn, is propped against a nondescript background. Fabric--a shirt, perhaps--has been tied around Peralte's midriff to cover his genitals. Lastly, the marines draped a Peraltiste banner on a flagpole above and behind Peralte's head in a manner that avoids covering his exposed face, eliminating any question of the man's identity. This was an important image meant to deliver a message of abjection and defeat; the marine photographer likely took great care in taking the photograph, just as his platoonmates went to great lengths to arrange and display the body.

In particolare, l’indagine si sofferma sui frammenti del Mainet e sul primo libro dell’Istoire le roy Charlemaine di Girart d’Amiens, sulla riscrittura franco-italiana nota come Karleto e sui Reali di Francia di Andrea da Barberino. Di quest’ultima opera si rilevano inoltre gli elementi di adesione alla cultura letteraria toscana del Medioevo (specialmente stilnovistica e novellistica) e il debito formale e contenutistico rispetto alla leggenda, anch’essa tramandata dal romanzo di Andrea, degli amori di Buovo d’Antona e Drusiana.

Une synthèse ...panoramique des catégories de plateformes didactiques a été dressée afin de comprendre les enjeux de cette nouvelle méthode d’enseignement à distance. La comparaison comme méthode ainsi que stratégie analytique et théorique a été utilisée comme méthodologie afin de mieux relever les points forts et les points faibles des solutions proposées.L’objectif de ce travail est de présenter les avantages et les inconvénients de chaque plateforme dans le but de faciliter le choix des acteurs et maximiser l’efficacité pédagogique.
