As something that surrounds, extends, and presents a text to the world, the phenomenon of paratext is gaining more and more attention within the discipline of Translation Studies. This edited volume, ...with contributions by five Nordic scholars, aims to build on that attention by presenting five case studies on paratexts in translations into Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish. A special focus lies on the paratextual mechanisms at play when works from different source cultures are translated into a Nordic target context. The translated works under scrutiny belong to genres such as literary novels, non-fiction works, and religious texts, and the paratexts surveyed include footnotes, covers, blurbs, introductions, and literary reviews. The scholars represented in the volume all work in Translation Studies, or at the intersection between Translation Studies and other disciplines.
The theme of this study is the linguistic experiences of inter-Scandinavian communication. More specifically, using language portraits as a method, the study maps the linguistic experiences of two individuals who have moved from Denmark to Sweden as adults, and who now speak in a manner that generally passes as Swedish. The focus of the present study, however, is not these individuals’ acquisition of the Swedish language but their experiences of friction between differing ways of evaluating interaction in the two countries. Several of the individuals’ narrated experiences illustrate how utterances which in Denmark are perceived as witty and humorous are perceived as vulgar and aggressive in Sweden. The individuals’ experiences and the sociolinguistic implications of them are analyzed using notions and perspectives from Pierre Bourdieu – in particular, the notions of linguistic habitus and linguistic market are used – along with the notion of Spracherleben, developed by Brigitta Busch. The study illuminates that even though Danish and Swedish are closely related languages, there are significant differences in the pragmatic logic that prevail in the linguistic markets of the two countries, and that these differences generate critical effects on the linguistic experiences of these mobile individuals.
On September 30, 2005, the Danish newspaperJyllands-Postenpublished twelve cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. Five months later, thousands of Muslims inundated the newspaper with outpourings of anger ...and grief by phone, email, and fax; from Asia to Europe Muslims took to the streets in protest. This book is the first comprehensive investigation of the conflict that aroused impassioned debates around the world on freedom of expression, blasphemy, and the nature of modern Islam.
Jytte Klausen interviewed politicians in the Middle East, Muslim leaders in Europe, the Danish editors and cartoonists, and the Danish imam who started the controversy. Following the winding trail of protests across the world, she deconstructs the arguments and motives that drove the escalation of the increasingly globalized conflict. She concludes that the Muslim reaction to the cartoons was not-as was commonly assumed-a spontaneous emotional reaction arising out of the clash of Western and Islamic civilizations. Rather it was orchestrated, first by those with vested interests in elections in Denmark and Egypt, and later by Islamic extremists seeking to destabilize governments in Pakistan, Lebanon, Libya, and Nigeria. Klausen shows how the cartoon crisis was, therefore, ultimately a political conflict rather than a colossal cultural misunderstanding.
The Muhammad cartoon crisis of 2005−2006 in Denmark caught the world by surprise as the growing hostilities toward Muslims had not been widely noticed. Through the methodologies of media ...anthropology, cultural studies, and communication studies, this book brings together more than thirteen years of research on three significant historical media events in order to show the drastic changes and emerging fissures in Danish society and to expose the politicization of Danish news journalism, which has consequences for the political representation and everyday lives of ethnic minorities in Denmark.
Kljucne rijeci: kulturni kapital, obrazovne nejednakosti, socioekonomski status, obrazovno postignuce, PISA, Hrvatska, Njemacka, Danska.
Håkon Evju demonstrates how history and historical writing were at the centre of debates over monarchy and monarchical reform politics in Denmark-Norway during the Enlightenment.
Since the reform of Upper Secondary School in 2005 in Denmark, genre writing has been mandatory in the L1 subject. In the predefined genres, argumentative reasoning, textual analysis and disciplinary ...knowledge are given high priority, whereas creative or narrative reasoning and writing are not part of the curriculum. In this article, the writer development of a student participant will be investigated, focusing on how narrative nonetheless becomes present in his assignments and how he negotiates the predefined genres he is supposed to write in the L1 subject. The main focus of this study is to explore how on the one hand narrative is a resource for writer development and disciplinary knowledge and on the other hand becomes part of the student's writer identity and identification with an exploratory student position. The empirical data consists of interviews and assignments, collected through the student's 3 years of upper secondary education. In conclusion, it is argued that narratives should be part of the L1 curriculum, as narratives have the potential to provide more holistic writer development and to contribute to disciplinary knowledge.
In the nineteenth century, the hotly disputed border region between Denmark and Germany was the focus of an intricate conflict that complicates questions of ethnic and national identity even today. ...Beyond the Border reconstructs the experiences of both Danish and German minority youths living in the area from the 1950s to the 1970s, a period in which relations remained tense amid the broader developments of Cold War geopolitics. Drawing on a remarkable variety of archival and oral sources, the author provides a rich and fine-grained analysis that encompasses political issues from the NATO alliance and European integration to everyday life and popular culture.
Pakistani migrant families in Denmark find themselves in a specific ethno-national, post-9/11 environment where Muslim immigrants are subjected to processes of non-recognition, exclusion and ...securitization. This ethnographic study explores how, why, and at what costs notions of relatedness, identity, and belonging are being renegotiated within local families and transnational kinship networks. Each entry point concerns the destructive-productive constitution of family life, where neglected responsibilities, obligations, and trust lead not only to broken relationships, but also, and inevitably, to the innovative creation of new ones. By connecting the micro-politics of the migrant family with the macro-politics of the nation state and global conjunctures in general, the book argues that securitization and suspicion-launched in the name of "integration"-escalate internal community dynamics and processes of family upheaval in unpredicted ways.
