The aim of the paper is to investigate the deuteromycotina genera species composition respectively and diversity at selected sites of the Danube river (Slovak Republic). The study site is situated in ...the lowland area along the Danube river and represents a large inland delta. Investigation of the microscopic fungi was provided in the years 1994-1998. Sampling frequency was monthly. It was shown that microscopic fungi in the Danube river water were relatively common organisms. Abundancy and species diversity of microscopic fungi can oscilate during season in biotop. This seasonal variability depends on availability and amount of substrate. Interaction between fungus colony number and water discharge was evident in all monitored sampling sites. This interaction could relate with higher concentration of organic compounds because of runoff. The association between fungal occurence and organic loading suggests that fungi may be usefull indicators of pollution. However, these organisms can survive in common and extreme habitats and no single species or genera has been identified as important in pollution indicator. In accordance with obtained results three new species for Skovakia were found out in water environment (Beauvaria bassina (Bals.) Vuill., Verticillium malthousei Ware a Verticillium lecani (Zimm.) Viegas)

Research into the ichthyofauna of the Vlasina Lake reservoir in south Serbia, which is part of the Danube basin, was carried out in 1993, 40 years after its formation. The results of the research ...reveal the presence of several species of fish belonging to the Adriatic and Aegean basin, such as Alburnus albidus, Rutilus basak, Scardinius graecus and Pachychilon macedonicus. These findings are of great importance from the aspect of conservation, because the species Scardinius graecus and Alburnus albidus are on the European list of endangered fish species. In the latest study of the Vlasina Lake reservoir ichthyofauna (70 years after its formation), the above-mentioned species were not found. However, the presence of naturalized populations of two species from the Adriatic basin were confirmed: Scardinius knezevici and Alburnus scoranza. These findings represent the first known areal expansion of these species, which are new to the ichthyofauna of Serbia, from the Adriatic into the Danube (Black Sea) basin.

The main subjects of consideration in the paper are: conceptual issues of sustainability in agriculture and analysis of resources base, production systems structure and policy framework for ...sustainable development of agriculture in Danube basin area. In a dynamically changing and complicating environment the sustainability of agriculture is provided by the optimal mix of site-specific production systems and techniques that in dinamic interaction produce a trade-off of environmental, economic and social values and services in the area observed. Motivation of farmers and other stakeholders in their implementation is provided by coordinated actions of environmental, agricultural, spatial, economic and social policy. A variety of natural conditions and resources allow the use of various agricultural production systems in the Danube basin area, and the success in securing the sustainable development of the sector as a whole will depend on appropriate policy actions and stakeholder cooperation at all levels.
Regarding the international and transboundary character of the Slovak Danube river section, taxonomic and saprobiological investigation of the benthic fauna has been realized regularly. Many species ...of this community are considered the suitable organisms for saprobity assessment. They dispose of high indicative abilities, which are necessary for water quality assessment. The macrozoobenthos samples were collected quantitatively from January 1997 to July 1998 from gravel or sand-mud substrate of littoral zone. They were sampled by Kubicek bentometer of (30x30x60 cm) for 10 minutes, whereby the quality was completed by circular net 30 cm in diameter, modified by commonly used kocking technique for 5 minutes. In both cases the mesh size - 0.3 mm were used and the samples were taken at 1-3 month intervals. Unfixed samples were separated under a stereomicroscope and quantitative parameters of taxonomic groups - abundance and biomass were determined as well. Questionable taxa were preserved in 70% ethylalcohol and identified later according to the identification keys by Biro (1981), Caraescu et al (1955), Widerholm (1993), Rozkosny (1980), Losos (1996), and others. List of benthic taxa was conscripted as a result. Dominance of individual taxa was calculated on the basis of the five-grade scale, whereby data in Appendix 1 represent the highest degree attained during the investigation. The abundant crustaceans of Gammaridae or big mussels of Unionidae were sampled separately for the purpose of heavy metals bioaccumulation analysis. These organisms were taken by circular net described or collected by hand. According to the results it can be state that the investigated macrozoobenthos community in the Danube river has consisted principally of permanent fauna. It is characterised by a high biomass and long development cycles. This fact has caused the effective efficiency at the water quality assessment from the biological point of view. In the case of saprobity, which fluctuates in beta-scale (except for alpha-saprobic Slovnaft site), the values of diversity indicators have become useful. The diversity is connected with qualitative analysis and on that basis the list of 162 benthic taxa (in total) have been recorded. The examinated taxa have been classified in to 18 systematic groups. Some of found species are considered taxonomically interesting or rare. The Potamopyrgus antipodarum, Pontogammarus obesus, Emphera lineata or Theodoxus transversalis, Ephoron virgo, Leuctra fusca, L. hippopus respectively can be mentioned as example. The quantitative data required for diversity index calculation were determined as abundance of taxa. Consequently the abundance and biomass of selected groups were determined. The most abundant group of permanent fauna - Gammaridae and Unionidae with the highest biomass were considered suitable for heavy metal bioaccumulation assessment. In comparison with other matrix, the obtained values corresponded mutually. The increased content of heavy metals in left-side locality Karlova Ves has been connected with pollution caused by left-side tributary the Morava river. Regarding the heavy metals content especially in benthic organisms, the results can be considered as preliminaryt fro the present. Therefore further investigation will be continued. On the basis of result the whole longitudinal profile of Slovak stretch will be evaluated from this point of view
The Water Quality Protection Working Group (WG) of the Hungarian-Slovak Transboundary Water Commission has elaborated, at its Tiszafured meeting in 1989, a programme for the extended joint water ...quality measurements and assessment of the Danube reach between Bratislava-Visegrad. The programme has started in April 1989, on the basis of approval of the plenipotentiaries of the parties. The extended water quality monitoring has been evaluated annually. After evaluation, proposed modifications have been agreed upon to reflect the new findings from the on-going monitoring programme and the changing environmental condition in the study area, such as was e.g. the Danube dammnig at Gabcikovo in 1992. All changes of the extensive monitoring programme have been agreed upon by plenipotentiaries for the Transboundary Waters of the parties. The memorandum of the 56th Session of the Hungarian-Slovak Transboundary Water Commission requested the WG to carry out an extended comparison of the results of investigations of the Danube and its tributaries for the period 1989-1995. The objective of this evaluation is to identify the dynamics of water quality changes and their trends in the Danube and in tributaries of the Hungarian and Slovak catchment area for the study period

The investigated area is located in one of the largest aquifers in the Central Europe, formed by danubian ...alluvial sediments of Quarternary age and recharged from the Danube River by bank infiltration. The physical properties and chemical composition of surface water as well as various biological and chemical processes determined the quality of groundwater along the river-groundwater infiltration path in the vicinity to the river were evaluated
