Describes the development of the P22 Type Foundry and comments on how its name was derived from an underground arts movement in Buffalo, U.S.A. in the 1980's which included Daniel Farrel and Richard ...Kelger. The author charts the work of Farrell in setting up the P22 Type Foundry; comments on the influence of Marcel Duchamp's 'The Large Glass'; discusses how P22 developed a repuration for fonts based on the handwriting of artists; notes P22' adaptaion to developments in Information technology; highlights a number of P22 fonts describing their qualities; and in conclusion considers the growth of P22 to employ the designers Colin Kahn and Paul Hunt, and its aquisition of the Lanston material.
Today with the help of millions of calculations a computer can help an artist create an animated universe so the time leap from Emile Cohl (1907) to computer animation (1977) is all within the ...reasonable logic of one man's lifetime, the flexible logic that bends from the Zoetrope (1850) to the isotope, strikes me as part of the conspiracy of the fiction of "realistic" images. ... filmmaking is still lying in the shadows of the history of art, not too well documented, not too well received (Mélis died a pauper), not too well understood (is there a serious Art critic writing about Animation?) I compare animation to the handmade mirrored door that leads to the realm of fantasies, dream/ nightmares, and archetype fairy tales, and already in the short history of this art form, some extraordinary work has been done.
