The Basis for the Legacy of Charlemagne : the Vita Karoli by Einhard.
The legacy of Charlemagne, his memory and history, is largely based on a text that is in itself already memory and history : The Life of Charlemagne by Einhard. One wonders if all memory of Charlemagne (or at least large part of it) is not based in the Vita Karoli. First we approach the renewal of the methodology concerning this text over the last century, since it is now better framed in the context of the reign of Louis the Pious, a reign which has been largely “ reconsidered” since the classical article of François-Louis Ganshof from 1957 up until the book The Penitential State
by Mayke de Jong, published in 2009. In Einhard’s work, the first three chapters form a prologue in which the author sketches the history surrounding the end of the Merovingian reign and the rise to power of the Carolingians. Afterwards the first part describes Charles’ conquests and his “ international relations”. In a second part, we get a portrait of Charlemagne, his family, his culture and his reign. In the third and final part, the author describes the final period of the Emperor’s life, his death and his testament. The composition is rigorous, classical and modern at the same time, and we propose to read it together, in its new presentation and translation into French made in 2014 in collaboration with Christiane Cosme, looking for the elements which are at the basis of the legacy of Charlemagne.

The opening of Einhard's Life of Charlemagne is famous for its mocking description of Childeric III, last Merovingian king of the Franks. The passage has always appeared somewhat detached from the ...body of the work, and its purpose has long been something of a puzzle. Although the date at which the Life was written remains a matter of debate, it is here suggested that the main features of the opening passage relate to Einhard's purpose in writing, which was rooted in the politics of the time.
Scholars with an interest in politics have long searched for meaningful ways to conceptualize power relationships, notably turning in recent years to the notion of "political culture." By recounting ...this concept's historiographical trajectory vis-à-vis the early medieval practice of exile and by highlighting subtle arguments in Einhard's Vita Karoli Magni regarding the proper application of banishment in Carolingian Europe, the present essay not only offers a new perspective on the elusive date of that seminal biography's composition, but also suggests that historians of any era may profitably apply Keith Michael Baker's definition of political culture to their own fields of inquiry by evaluating how dispute resolution practices either resonated or struck discord among a polity's chief stakeholders.

Book Chapter
The apocryphal travels of Charlemagne to Jerusalem and Constantinople have their roots in the Carolingian sources of the eighth and ninth centuries. The story begins with chapter 16 of Einhard’sLife ...of Charlemagne, in which the biographer elaborates the ways in which foreign leaders sought the friendship of the Frankish king after his imperial coronation and willingly offered themselves as his subjects.¹ Charlemagne increased the glory of his kingdom, Einhard explains, by winning over kings and peoples through friendly means. One of the surrendering kings was Alfonso, the king of Galicia and Asturias, who sent envoys charged with delivering letters
