This volume is a collection of previously unpublished papers dealing with the neglected "phenomenological" dimension of the philosophy of Johann Gottlieb Fichte, which it compares and contrasts to ...the phenomenology of his contemporary Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and to that of Edmund Husserl and his 20th century followers. Issues discussed include: phenomenological method, self-consciousness, intersubjectivity, temporality, intentionality, mind and body, and the drives. In addition to Fichte, authors discussed include: Hegel, Brentano, Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre, Levinas, and RicŒur.
Around 1800 the hopes for grounding a knowledge of nature confronted the dilemma of human duality. Both Fichte in Die Bestimmung des Menschen and Kleist in "Die Marquise von O..." and Penthesilea ...unfold empirical worldviews in which a scientific epistemology based on material passivity is allied with rape and violence. They diverge, however, in the alternatives they present. For Fichte, wedding a knowable natural order with spirit, to accommodate both self and others, depends on a particular embodied form of interpersonal summons found in the coincidence of love and sex. For Kleist, however, neither self-knowledge, nor activity, nor love, nor even faith-Fichte's entire repertoire of ligatures between mind and empirical world-can provide a foundation for exterior know-ledge or true dialogue. As figural language becomes action and mythical tradition devours itself, the compatibility of autonomy with the grounded knowledge necessary for science appears as an unfounded idealist's dream.

Schelling's philosophy of nature seemed to move him toward a realistic philosophy, while Fichte's interests in the origin of personal consciousness, intersubjectivity, and the ultimate determination of the agent's moral will moved him to explore what he called "faith" in one popular text, or a theory of an intelligible world. Johann Gottlieb Fichtes "Grundlage des Naturrechts" stellt einen Wendepunkt der Rechts- und Staatsphilosophie dar. Der erste Teil (1796) begründet den Begriff des Rechts und seine systematische ...Anwendung weder durch eine Grundanthropologie wie im klassischen Naturrecht noch, wie Kant, durch einen kategorischen Imperativ. Vielmehr wird der Rechtsbegriff als Bedingung des Selbstbewußtseins eines endlichen Vernunftwesens deduziert. Dabei erweist sich das Recht als eine notwendige Bedingung der Intersubjektivität und diese wiederum als eine notwendige Bedingung der Subjektivität. Der zweite Teil (1797) liefert eine für ihre Originalität, Radikalität und Systematizität bekannte Anwendung. Der Philosoph Johann Gottlieb Fichte (1762-1814) gilt mit seiner sogenannten ›Wissenschaftslehre‹ als einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter einer transzendentalen Theorie über - modern gesprochen - ...Wissenschaftstheorie. Könnten so seine Entdeckungen nicht auch für die Theologie systematische Bedeutung haben, insbesondere in der Frage, ob diese selber eine Wissenschaft sein kann? Mathias Müller versucht anhand einer systematischen Konstruktionsanalyse von Fichtes Schrift »Die Principien der Gottes- Sitten- u. Rechtslehre. Februar und März 1805« zu zeigen, dass und wie in der Wissenschaftslehre diese selber eine Grundlegung bildet, die als eine Grundlagentheorie der Theologie eingesehen werden kann. Mittels des Modells des ›Transzensus‹ wird versucht, einen für das transzendentale Ich gangbaren Weg nachzuzeichnen und anzubieten, um so - performativ erlebbar - die Wissenschaftlichkeit einer Theologie als transzendentale Fundamentaltheologie zu erschliessen.
