Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory (GLOSA) systems are believed to be able to lower CO2 emissions, fuel consumption, and travel times by avoiding unnecessary stopping at intersections. Approaching ...vehicles are given speed recommendations based on current and future traffic light signal phase timings. These systems have been widely evaluated by means of simulation and, while most research focuses on the impact assessment of GLOSA along with environmental influences, minor attention was drawn to the holistic technical evaluation of included sub-modules and implementations.
In this extended version of our IEEE VNC 2016 publication, we present a holistic concept for the technical evaluation of IEEE 802.11p-based GLOSA systems. We first give a comprehensive survey on GLOSA systems and studies all around the world and identify remaining problems. We introduce metrics to cover the whole spectrum of GLOSA operations and particularly focus on (modeling) problems we encountered in the field that are often not taken into consideration in simulation studies. We demonstrate how this concept can be used to evaluate the real-world GLOSA system tested in the European Commission co-funded field trial DRIVE C2X. Results derived from Field Operational Test (FOT) data show that our metrics are well-suited to assess the performance of the GLOSA system, and also to identify sources of potential problems or bottlenecks.
Based on our findings, we argue that most GLOSA simulation studies are too optimistic in terms of communication performance. Lastly, we give recommendations on how real-world GLOSA systems can be further improved to support a sufficient level of performance.
As an important component of urban roads, signalized intersections have contributed significantly to motor vehicle emissions, which however has not been modelled in high accuracy. This paper uses the ...International Vehicle Emission (IVE) model to obtain the localized emission factors, so that a dispersion model, CAL3QHC was introduced and modified to incorporate the vehicle acceleration and deceleration states. Two emission reduction schemes for urban signalized intersections, the Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory (GLOSA) system and the no-obstacle driveway design, were proposed, by taking the intersection of Wen'er West Road and Liangmu Road in Hangzhou, China as an empirical example. The overall performance and roadside emission dispersion were simulated using VISSIM software package, with the improved CAL3QHC model. The GLOSA system and the no-obstacle driveway design were found to mitigate the roadside CO concentration by 21.2% and 22.1%, respectively. Findings of the study may assist to monitor roadside pollutant concentrations, formulate and evaluate emission mitigation strategies in urban intersections.

Glosses as an integral element of medieval text: in search of adequate research procedures Most Old Polish texts are in fact sixteenth century copies with accompanying inscribed or reinscribed ...glosses (interlinear and marginal) introduced into the text. The aim of this article is not only to show how to recognize these types of glosses in the text using elements of semantics, syntax, rhetoric and source studies, but also to propose a typology of tools adequate for recognizing incorporated glosses. The authors believe that only a multidimensional analysis gives a chance to achieve this goal. They also show that analyses conducted usually from one, sometimes two, perspectives, yield results that can be easily undermined from another perspective. The majority of examples come from four Old Polish apocrypha, including the most extensive monument of Polish and Slavic medieval prose and apocryphal literature, Rozmyślanie przemyskie (‘The Przemyśl Meditation’). In the only preserved copies of these apocryphal texts, glosses are incorporated into the main body of the text. Proper recognition of glosses leads to a complete change of thinking about these texts and about Polish religious language in the Middle Ages in general.
This paper presents Multiple Traffic Light Advisor (MTLA), a novel Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory (GLOSA) system that leverages 5G communication technology. GLOSA systems are emerging as a key ...component in intelligent transportation systems, thanks to the development of effective communication technologies. At its core, MTLA serves as a guidance system for drivers, providing real-time instructions to adjust vehicle speed to optimize the utilization of current and future states of traffic lights along their route. The work addresses several limitations in the current state-of-the-art approaches, including the use of an overly simplified velocity profile, the omission of potential grip and jerk in problem formulation, and the absence of a detailed description of the algorithm’s implementation aspects. Initially, we comprehensively present an optimization-free implementation of the overall control architecture based on an unconventional speed profile. Subsequently, MTLA is improved within a non-linear Model Predictive Control (MPC) framework which uses the latter nonoptimal solution as an initial guess and considers potential grip and jerk in the problem formulation. The developed systems are numerically tested and compared within a high-fidelity simulation environment using the IPG CarMaker simulator. The results demonstrate promising performance in terms of energy savings, with a significant reduction of 37% in energy usage, as well as improved overall comfort with respect to the case where no guidance is given to the driver. These findings suggest a high potential for future developments in this domain.

This quasi-experimental study intended to consider the role of using CALL-based and gloss-mediated vocational vocabulary learning and its impact on vocabulary knowledge. The study used five different majors. For each major, there were two classes, so the researcher conveniently selected one class as the control group and the second class as the experimental group. Thus, five classes as the control groups (each field of study one class) and five classes as the experimental groups (each field of study one class). The total number of participants was 210, that 106 learners were in the control groups and 104 were in the experimental groups. The overall findings revealed that the treatment groups outperformed the control groups. Therefore, using computer-based glossing information leads to better performance in vocabulary knowledge and vocabulary retention.

In this paper we report the implementation and experimental evaluation of a proposed hybrid communication ecosystem for CCAM applications such as cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) and smart ...intersections. Three wireless technologies have been suggested for communications between vehicles and intelligent traffic lights and are evaluated in this work: ITS-G5 based on IEEE 802.11p and LTE sidelink with PC5 air interface for direct short range links, and regular mobile LTE with LTE Uu air interface for long range or indirect links. The applications used are independent of the communication channel, to enable a comparison on the application level of the different communication technologies. Field experiments were carried out with two CACC-equipped vehicles and three intelligent traffic lights in two field test locations under ideal, i.e., no-traffic, conditions and with real traffic. Experimental results related to CACC show that the best performance in terms of latency is achieved by the ITS-G5 system, while LTE PC5 and LTE Uu links show a penalty of 20 and 50 ms respectively. However, experimental results show that all three communication technologies were still able to guarantee string stable performance of the vehicle platoon. Regarding the smart intersections, an analysis based on field measurements and comparison between long- and short-range solutions is proposed; the analysis includes the impact of each channel on the applications such as speed advisory and green light prediction. The reported experimental evaluation shows the potential of current mobile technologies for CCAM use cases and highlights the way for further CCAM applications based on 5G and beyond mobile networks.
This article reports on a mapping study to investigate the C-ROADS Day 1 C-ITS application Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory (GLOSA). In the study, 64 publications between 2006 and 2019 where ...reviewed and classified according to a schema developed using thematic analysis of the selected publications. Among the findings were that the typical publication evaluates through simulation benefits for the equipped vehicle, leaving considerable gaps in investigations of societal effects. Additionally, there is a lack of investigation on driver behaviour, both for the equipped vehicle and for fellow road users—the ability to accurately model such behaviour is necessary for reliable simulation results.
In this study, a Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory (GLOSA) system for buses (B-GLOSA) was developed. The proposed B-GLOSA system was implemented on diesel buses, and field tested to validate and ...quantify the potential real-world benefits. The developed system includes a simple and easy-to-calibrate fuel consumption model that computes instantaneous diesel bus fuel consumption rates. The bus fuel consumption model, a vehicle dynamics model, the traffic signal timings, and the relationship between vehicle speed and distance to the intersection are used to construct an optimization problem. A moving-horizon dynamic programming problem solved using the A-star algorithm is used to compute the energy-optimized vehicle trajectory through signalized intersections. The Virginia Smart Road test facility was used to conduct the field test on 30 participants. Each participant drove three scenarios, including a base case uninformed drive, an informed drive with signal timing information communicated to the driver, and an informed drive with the recommended speed computed by the B-GLOSA system. The field test investigated the performance of using the developed B-GLOSA system considering different impact factors, including road grades and red indication offsets, using a split-split-plot experimental design. The test results demonstrated that the proposed B-GLOSA system can produce smoother bus trajectories through signalized intersections, thus producing fuel consumption and travel time savings. Specifically, compared to the uninformed drive, the B-GLOSA system produces fuel and travel time savings of 22.1% and 6.1%, on average, respectively.
