By proposing a new narratological category of "spaciousness," this article articulates how open spaces in The Old Man and the Sea —simply described, visually accessible settings—expose the ...possibility of our imaginative limitations as readers. The analysis further examines how the contemplation of vast and simple space occasions Santiago's transition from an anthropocentric to a biocentric ethic and how that ethic comes into being for both Santiago and the reader through an interpretive process exposing the inevitability of appropriation in the text and the world beyond. Simplicity becomes a means to help us negotitate that inevitability through moments of self-consciousness.
This article analyzes the translational shifting in In Einem Andern Land , Annemarie Horschitz's 1930 German translation of Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms . Horschitz, ostensibly influenced by ...a desire to have her translation conform to German literary traditions and the expectations of her German readers, embellishes Hemingway's understated prose, especially language associated with the war. The result in the translation is an altered portrayal of Frederic Henry and a weakening of the novel's critique of hyperbolic rhetoric.
In his article "Ironic Appropriation of Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls in Bulosan's The Cry and the Dedication" Robert Brown discusses Carlos Bulosan's The Cry and the Dedication and Ernest ...Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls. Brown claims that Bulosan's appropriation of For Whom borders on plagiarism and that this in part defines The Cry as a postcolonial text. Brown maintains that E. San Juan Jr.'s otherwise comprehensive introduction to The Cry ignores Hemingway's text in favor of a Filipino author, Luis Taruc, with an implicit argument that Bulosan used Taruc to make his novel a more emphatic example of Filipino determinacy. San Juan negates his potential to describe Filipino determinacy in his negation of Hemingway and in so doing, San Juan echoes Bulosan's earlier dismissal of source materials in ironic ways, revealing a trans-historical habit of publicly diminishing an identity in the process of trying to reveal it in a positive light. Brown uses Homi Bhabha's "Of Mimicry and Man" to examine identity, postcolonialism, and geopolitics and details the ways in which all of Bulosan's appropriations and mimicries adds to The Cry's critical value.

One on One is a collection of short stories that showcases the give and take that comes in a partnership. Some of these stories tell of the tumults of sibling relationships as characters work through ...defining moments for their families. Others feature the dynamics of newfound friends making trouble on a class trip, enemies stuck together on a camping trip, and co-workers reflecting on their respective futures. Influenced by a healthy dose of young adult literature, One on One is not meant to be a commentary on romantic relationships or friendship in general, but is an examination into the risks and rewards of interacting with another person, whether or not that person’s beliefs or goals line up with your own.
Cain affirms that what Hemingway accomplishes in his fiction is evocative and highly suggestive, a matter of complicated feeling and insight, and the effects that he achieves are difficult to ...articulate. The challenge that Hemingway poses is especially formidable in the case of A Farewell to Arms, a novel of love and war. Here, the death of love in the book is explored.

Further demonstrating the novel’s enduring influence ...and appeal, Lost Horizon has inspired several sequel novels, a musical, radio adaptations, and the namesake for the Shangri-La Hotel chain. Indeed, the word Shangri-la itself was coined by Hilton and has found a place in the OED. Although not all these appropriations are necessarily to be lauded, it is clear that Lost Horizon has maintained a prominence in popular culture that is difficult to reduce or explain away in terms of mere entertainment value.
Dennis Covington's award-winning Salvation on Sand Mountain , a nonfiction book from the 1990s, seems modeled in part on Hemingway's 1920s novel, The Sun Also Rises . The novel is a roman à clef and ...the 1990s work an intricately plotted piece of literary nonfiction. The novel's protagonist, Jake Barnes, is a young journalist trying to make sense of his own spiritual experience—while the nonfiction is participatory journalism written by another young journalist trying to make sense of his spiritual experience. This essay explores these and other parallels between the two works to discover how Salvation on Sand Mountain can be read as a postmodern response to The Sun Also Rises .
