Extreme relationship dysfunction, latent homosexuality, and repressed frustration reveal modernist sensibility in this story, underlining how contemporary heteronormative hegemony, social conventions, and inadequate role models disturbed the successful formation of gender identity in early 1920s United States.

This analysis of Hemingway's short story narrative construction applies semantic congruence to Hemingway's use of similes in three romantic conflicts. Semantic congruence is an interdisciplinary ...approach to literary criticism. combining cognitive linguistics and psychosocial theory. Semantic congruence links cognitive distance in simile construction with character identity negotiation. The application of semantic congruence to Hemingway's simile choices in "The End of Something," "Hills Like White Elephants," and "A Canary for One," demonstrates a link between the behavior of his characters and the psychosocial cognitive stress of identity verification raised in the plot conflict. Semantic congruence is a critical focus that not only enhances the understanding of Hemingway's narrative construction of binary gender roles and social conflict in these romantic conflicts, but can also be applied to other relationship conflicts in Hemingway's fiction.

According to the tape that is transcribed and printed in Faulkner in the University, he said: I think that Dreiser knew exactly what he wanted to say, but he had a terrific difficulty in saying it, there was never any fun to him, any pleasure to him, he was convinced that he had a message, I don't mean an ideological message or political but he had to tell folks, This is what you are. According to Dreiser's account, the national newspaper coverage about the lynching of a Jew, Leo Frank, in Georgia reached him travelling in Ohio.
My subject is enantiosemy and its relation to what the literary critic György Lukács termed transcendental homelessness as they figure in North American literature. In linguistics, words that house ...antithetical meanings -- that is, that simultaneously mean themselves and their opposite -- are known as enantiosemic, and this condition of lexical self-opposition is called enantiosemy. In this project, I broaden linguistic enantiosemy to show how its logic reveals a structure of thought that shapes how we perceive and experience the world more generally. I continue to use enantiosemy to describe this broader, conceptual structure of thought as I observe it in the texts I examine. Transcendental homelessness is, I maintain, the paradigmatic example of conceptual enantiosemy. In Chapters 1 and 2, I analyze enantiosemic paradox and ambivalence in Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick (1851), paying particular attention to the novel’s frontmatter, as well as the contested meanings of geography, divinity, and orphanhood. In Chapter 3, I examine Ernest Hemingway’s In Our Time (1925), noting how an enantiosemic logic pervades the text’s narrative structure as well as its engagement of peace and spirituality. I conclude the project with a reading of Michael Ondaatje’s Warlight (2018) in which I find that conceptual enantiosemy is at hand in the interplay between constructed lineages and uncertain geographies. The conceptual enantiosemy that I highlight in all three novels evokes a transcendental homelessness, which forms the through line I observe in these texts.
Settler colonialism relies on land seizure and the erasure of Indigenous peoples and culture, and has not ended, despite common belief (Arvin et al., 2013; Patel, 2021). As settler colonialism ...continues to function, so does its oppressive structures. This study identified dual phenomena requiring investigation. First, the presence of settler colonialism in U.S. culture that manifests through systems of Whiteness and heteropatriarchy that enforce the normalization of both these structures. Second, this study examined the experiences of students with an emergent canon of literature situated in this cultural system. Using a hybrid phenomenological case study approach, this study explored the phenomena at a single site for in-depth analysis. The study focused on student experiences in literature courses in the California State University (CSU) system.Using three data sets, including system-wide course catalogs, 5 years of course syllabi, and 13 student interviews, this study presents an emergent American Literary canon across the CSU. Three spaces of interaction were identified: the macro cultural system every person in the United States exists in, the meso system of the historical foundations of American Literature, and the micro space of the literature classroom. These data sources allow this study to document the real-life impact and potential replicative oppression of textual selection and pedagogy. This study views text, peer, and instructor interaction as three spaces that converge variably, requiring students to navigate any combination of these at any given time. A primary tool of analysis emerged from Freire’s (1970/2000) concept of generative themes, and Bakhtin’s (1981) concept of heteroglossia. Primarily, when viewed through a hybridized Freirean-Bakhtinian lens of generative themes and heteroglossia, a literary canon in a settler colonial culture with dominant narratives can become an authority of identity value.Key findings include the development and application of the term generative-heteroglossia as a method of analyzing student experiences as they navigate text, peer, and instructor interactions. Faced with moments requiring decisions and action, students frequently have to reflect and decide how to respond, internalize, and react to situations that can lead to oppression or liberation. Recommendations include re-evaluation of reading lists in American Literature survey courses, a need for faculty to engage in purposeful questioning of how and why a text is taught, and a broader cultural questioning of literary canons and the power they hold in representing or resisting dominant sociocultural systems.
What can readability studies tell us about the novel genre? By tracing both the history of readability studies, a partially abandoned field located at the intersection of education and literacy ...studies, and the history of the English language novel, this project makes a case for the validity of conversations around readability within literary circles. One of the primary outcomes of readability studies is a number of formulas that measure various elements of a text, such as vocabulary and sentence structure. However, few formulas were created with fiction, or more specifically, the novel genre, in mind. To determine the possible applications of classic readability formulas for the novel genre, this project uses a digital readability formula to measure the readability of a corpus of 127 English language novels from 1800 to 1922. However, the resulting data highlights the difficulty of measuring such a wide-ranging, unique literary genre. Finally, this project proposes a framework for using a statistical analysis of novels to identify potential lines of inquiry favorable to close reading. By approaching novels through a quantitative lens, this project highlights how considering the bigger picture can help us determine which specific elements may lead to a richer understanding of the text.
This explanatory sequential mixed methods study sought to understand the influences of teaching experience on perceptions of autonomy and competence on 7th through 12th grade English language arts ...teachers’ text selection decisions through a survey and interviews. The findings of this explanatory sequential design survey study could affirm practices of those teachers utilizing diverse texts in the classroom, encourage those lacking confidence in aligning nontraditional texts with their state’s standards, and remind administrators of teachers’ need for autonomy in the classroom. While no statistically significant difference was found on the autonomy and competence subscale scores based on teaching experience, the findings from this study further explain the obstacles teachers face when making choices for their students and their classrooms. Teachers exhibiting low perceived competence often faced limited opportunities to select texts for their students, while teachers exhibiting high perceived competence were more confident in their abilities to select texts. Teachers exhibiting low perceived autonomy shared issues of micromanagement, mandatory co-planning, censorship issues, budget constraints and lack of administrative support; teachers with high perceived autonomy shared they received administrative support and opportunities to select preferred texts and texts based on the needs of students.
