The objective of this study was to determine the antioxidant and quality characteristics of yogurt containing olive leaf hot water extract (CON: 0, OLY1: 0.1, OLY2: 0.2, and OLY4: 0.4% (w/v)) stored ...at 4°С for 15 days. After storage, the lactic acid bacteria count showed no significant difference between yogurt samples either in the presence or absence of olive leaf extract (p > 0.05). The total phenolic content, DPPH radical scavenging activity, and reducing power increased upon increasing the content of the olive leaf hot water extract. Oleuropein was found to be the most abundant phenolic compounds present in olive leaf, and the oleuropein content in OLY4, as measured by HPLC, decreased gradually to 1.09, 1.00, and 0.96 g/L upon increasing the storage time; however, this reduction was not significant (p > 0.05). In sensory evaluations, OLY1 gave the highest score among the experimental groups. The results of this study thereby demonstrate that olive leaf hot water extract can be used to improve the antioxidant capacity and sensory characteristics of yogurt.
Resumen Blutaparon vermiculare y Funastrum glaucum crecen en suelos arenosos con baja disponibilidad de nutrimentos y poca capacidad de retención de agua, influenciadas además por salinidad, alta ...radiación y fuertes vientos. Se caracterizaron anatómicamente sus órganos vegetativos con el fin de distinguir rasgos que pudiesen vincularse a las condiciones del hábitat. Se recolectaron raíces, tallos y hojas, las cuales se procesaron siguiendo la metodología estándar para hacer montajes observables con microscopio óptico. En B. vermiculare las raíces son tri o tetrarcas con parénquima cortical de células voluminosas; los tallos jóvenes tienen una eustela típica; no obstante, al anillo vascular secundario típico, se adicionan otros, producidos por meristemas laterales; las hojas son epistomáticas y bifaciales con hipodermis abaxial acuífera y mesofilo con células radiadas alrededor de los haces vasculares. Funastrum glaucum tiene raíces diarcas; en sus tallos jóvenes es evidente hipodermis, parénquima clorofiliano en empalizada y tejido vascular primario organizado en un anillo con radios parenquimáticos estrechos; en estructura secundaria, se diferencia cambium vascular con actividad desigual; las hojas son carnosas, anfiestomáticas y bifaciales con epidermis abaxial papilosa. Destaca en B. vermiculare la abundancia de cristales en hojas y tallos, y en F. glaucum su importante reserva amilácea en caules. Se discuten los rasgos que aseguran la supervivencia de estos taxa, entre los que destacan: tejidos de protección desarrollados, presencia de reservorios de agua, anatomía Kranz, variantes en la actividad del cambium vascular.
Abstract Blutaparon vermiculare and Funastrum glaucum grow in sandy soils with low nutrients availability and low water retention capacity, also influenced by salinity, high radiation and strong winds. The aim of this study was the anatomical characterization of vegetative organs and distinguishing characters that could be linked to habitat conditions. Roots, stems and leaves were collected and they were processed following the standard methodology for mounts observable with an optical microscope. In B. vermiculare, the roots are tri or tetrarchs with bulky cortical parenchyma cells; young stems have a typical eustele and a typical secondary vascular ring, but others lateral meristems are added; the leaves of this species are epistomatics, bifacial with abaxial aquifer parenchyma and mesophyll with stellate cells around the vascular bundles. Funastrum glaucum has diarch roots; in their young stems is evident hypodermis, palisade parenchyma and the primary vascular tissue organized in a ring with a very narrow parenchimatic radio; in secondary structure, vascular cambium with unequal activity; the leaves are fleshy, anphystomatics and bifacials with papillose abaxial epidermis. B. vermiculare is distinguished by the abundance of crystals in leaves and stems, and F. glaucum by their important starchy reservation in caules. The features that ensure their survival were discussed, among they distinguish the following: developed protective tissues, presence of water reservoir, Kranz anatomy, variants in vascular cambium activity.
El cultivo de durazno (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch.) es de gran importancia en la provincia de Pamplona, dada su adaptación a la zona, como un frutal caducifolio. Los modelos matemáticos son ...relevantes en la agricultura para evitar muestreos destructivos, lo que supone la pérdida de material de investigación y la compra de costosos equipos de medición. Para estimar variables de respuesta de características del fruto del cultivar Jarillo a diferentes altitudes, se llevó a cabo un estudio en el paisaje de montaña de Norte de Santander, Colombia, evaluando 660 frutos desde el inicio de la formación hasta su maduración, a una altitud de 1.670, 1.870 y 2.170 m s.n.m. El rendimiento y el número de frutos totales fue mayor en la menor altitud evaluada. A 1.870 m s.n.m. el contenido de solidos solubles totales fue menor; la relación de madurez tendió a incrementarse en las tres altitudes, pero en menor proporción, para 1.870 m s.n.m. El análisis de regresión lineal múltiple indicó diversos modelos de regresión lineal simple adecuados, según, sea el caso, para estimar sólidos solubles totales, cosecha total y peso fresco del durazno por altitud.
The current study presents the way in which ions are distributed in an adult maize plant after flowering, and as the pressure of permanent ion stress throughout approximately six months; including ...all the phenological periods. The research was conducted under field conditions with the climatic characteristics of an arid or hyper-arid zone. Maize is a sensitive crop regarding the salinity of soil and water, but “lluteño” maize has a higher degree of tolerance to salinity, excess of boron (B) and other ions, this suggests that the distribution plays an important role in the tolerance mechanisms of this ecotype. The variety accumulates twice as much sodium (Na+) in the root than in the leaf, and 25 times of B more in the leaf than in the root; calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+)
and potassium (K+) were also significantly accumulated in the leaf. High concentrations of B, Ca2+, and Mg2+ were found in the thick root and K+ in the fine roots. Sodium accumulated similarly in thick and fine roots, suggesting a very active mechanism of Na+ accumulation in roots, independent of their thickness or age.
El presente estudio muestra cómo se distribuyen los iones en una planta de maíz adulta después de la floración, y como la presión del estrés iónico es permanente durante un largo período, aproximadamente seis meses; incluye la totalidad de los períodos fenológicos. La investigación se realizó en condiciones de campo con las características climáticas de una zona árida o hiperárida. El maíz es un cultivo sensible a la salinidad del suelo y el agua, pero el maíz “lluteño” presenta un alto grado de tolerancia a la salinidad, el exceso de boro (B) y otros iones, lo que sugiere que la distribución de estos juega un papel importante en sus mecanismos de tolerancias en este ecotipo. Acumula el doble de sodio (Na+) en la raíz que en la hoja, 25 veces más que el B en la hoja, también el calcio (Ca2+), el magnesio (Mg2+) y el potasio (K+) se acumularon significativamente en la hoja. Con respecto
al tipo de raíz, en las gruesas se observó una alta concentración de B, Ca2+, Mg+2 y en las raíces finas se encontró el K+. El sodio se acumula de manera similar en las raíces gruesas y finas, lo que sugiere un mecanismo muy activo de acumulación de Na+ en la raíz, independientemente del grosor o la edad de las mismas.
Tagosodes orizicolus (Muir) is the most important pest of rice in Latin America. Besides causing direct damage called hopperburn from feeding on and ovipositing in rice leaves, this insect pest also ...transmits rice hoja blanca virus (RHBV, Family Phenuiviridae, Genus Tenuivirus) in a persistent-propagative manner. This pathosystem can cause up to 100% yield loss in Latin American rice fields. T. orizicolus and RHBV symptoms were detected in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida rice fields in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1980s. However, neither has been detected in the United States since. Two outbreaks of T. orizicolus on ratoon rice occurred in the fall of 2015 and 2018 in counties southwest and south of Houston, TX. Insects were collected from ratoon rice fields by sweep net methods. Insects from the 2015 and 2018 outbreaks were tested individually and in pools of 10, respectively, for RHBV infection and the cytochrome oxidase 1 (CO1) gene from Delphacidae. No insects were positive for RHBV, however, all samples yielded amplicons for the CO1 gene. Furthermore, the CO1 gene from five 2015 individuals was sequenced and found to have a 100% identity to the Fer26_Argentina and 99.81% identity to the DEL074 Venezuela isolates of T. orizicolus. Five new sequences from 2015 individuals have now been deposited in GenBank. It is imperative to stay up to date on the potential invasion and establishment of this exotic pest of rice in Texas and other rice-growing regions of the United States through continued monitoring and research.
Soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is an important soybean pest in North America. In this study, A. glycines was fed on detached leaves of Glycine max (L.) Merrill ...(Fabaceae) at 20, 23, 26, 29, and 32 °C under 3 rearing methods: leaf-disc method, filter paper method, and moisturized cotton method. Aphis glycines life parameters, including nymph stage duration, adult lifespan, adult fecundity, adult body size, and intrinsic rate of increase were measured. There were no significant differences in nymph stage duration among these rearing methods at 20 to 32 °C. Within this temperature range, the filter paper method and the moisturized cotton method resulted in similar or greater adult lifespans, adult fecundities, adult body sizes, and intrinsic rates of increase in comparison to the leaf-disc method. When nymphs of A. glycines were reared at 20 to 29 °C, the experimental labor required for the moisturized cotton method was less than that for the filter paper method and the leaf-disc method. Considering the development, reproduction, and experimental labor, the moisturized cotton method is recommended as a good detached leaf method for rearing individual A. glycines. These conclusions will be useful and informational for researchers who study A. glycines, especially when selecting methods to rear A. glycines individually in the laboratory. El pulgón de la soja, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), es una plaga importante de la soja en América del Norte. En este estudio, A. glycines fue alimentado con hojas desprendidas de Glycine max (L.) Merrill (Fabaceae) a 20, 23, 26, 29 y 32 °C bajo 3 métodos de crianza: método de disco de hoja, método de papel de filtro y método de algodón humedecido. Se midieron los parámetros de vida del A. glycines, incluyendo la duración de la estadio del ninfa, la duración de vida de los adultos, la fecundidad, el tamaño corporal adulto y la tasa intrínseca de aumento. No hubo diferencias significativas en la duración del estadio de ninfa entre estos métodos de crianza a 20 a 32 °C. Dentro de este rango de temperatura, el método del papel de filtro y el método del algodón humedecido dieron resultados similares o mayores sobre la duración de vida de los adultos, la fecundidad, el tamaño corporal de adultos y la tasa intrínseca de aumento en comparación con el método del disco de hoja. Cuando se criaron las ninfas a una temperatura de 20 a 29 °C, el trabajo experimental requerido para el método del algodón humedecido fue menor que los métodos del papel de filtro y del disco de hoja. Teniendo en cuenta el desarrollo, la reproducción y el trabajo experimental, se recomienda el método del algodón humedecido como un buen método de hojas sueltas para criar los individuales de A. glycines. Estas conclusiones serán útiles e informativas para los investigadores que estudian A. glycines, especialmente al seleccionar métodos para criar A. glycines individualmente en el laboratorio.
The epiphytic fern Microgramma squamulosa occurs in the Neotropics and shows dimorphic sterile and fertile leaves. The present study aimed to describe and compare qualitatively and quantitatively ...macroscopic and microscopic structural characteristics of the dimorphic leaves of M. squamulosa, to point more precisely those characteristics which may contribute to epiphytic adaptations. In June 2009, six isolated host trees covered by M. squamulosa were selected close to the edge of a semi-deciduous seasonal forest fragment in the municipality of Novo Hamburgo, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Macroscopic and microscopic analyzes were performed from 192 samples for each leaf type, and permanent and semi-permanent slides were prepared. Sections were observed under light microscopy using image capture software to produce illustrations and scales, as well as to perform quantitative analyses. Fertile and sterile leaves had no qualitative structural differences, being hypostomatous and presenting uniseriate epidermis, homogeneous chlorenchyma, amphicribal vascular bundle, and hypodermis. The presence of hypodermal tissue and the occurrence of stomata at the abaxial face are typical characteristics of xeromorphic leaves. Sterile leaves showed significantly larger areas (14.80cm²), higher sclerophylly index (0.13g/cm²) and higher stomatal density (27.75stomata/mm²) than fertile leaves. The higher sclerophylly index and the higher stomatal density observed in sterile leaves are features that make these leaves more xeromorphic, enhancing their efficiency to deal with limited water availability in the epiphytic environment, compared to fertile leaves.
Scutia buxifolia Reisseck (Rhamnaceae vulgarmente conocida como "coronillo", es una especie endémica de los talares del Norte y Este de Buenos Aires. Es un arbusto espinoso o un pequeño árbol de 2 a ...6 m de altura, con ramas tetragonales y espinas axilares. Es una especie utilizada en medicina popular como diurética, cardiotónica y antihipertensiva. En este estudio se analizó la estructura foliar y caulinar de S. buxifolia con el objetivo de aportar caracteres morfológicos y micrográficos, por medio de técnicas farmacobotánicas. En los disociados de las hojas se distinguieron estomas anomocíticos y hexacíticos, cristales romboidales, drusas y vainas cristalíferas acompañando a las tráqueas. En transcorte, las láminas foliares presentaron epidermis unistrata, idioblastos cristalíferos, estomas en la epidermis abaxial, mesófilo dorsi-ventral, colénquima angular abaxial y vainas esclerenquimáticas o parenquimáticas que rodean los haces vasculares. Los diafanizados foliares mostraron venación primaria simple y pinada, y venación secundaria camptódroma broquidódroma; venación marginal ojalada e incompleta y aréolas bien desarrolladas. En los tallos primarios y secundarios, y en las espinas caulinares se observaron esclereidas, drusas, cristales romboidales y cúbicos. Los resultados obtenidos aportaron caracteres morfológicos y anatómicos diagnósticos para la caracterización e identificación de S. buxifolia.
Internal combustion engines are complex machines that constitute an object of design, and in which diverse processes and variables encounter. In the industrial field, the design of a new engine ...begins with the conception of a well-established solution with consideration on the experience of the designers. To perform the structural design of an engine, it is needed to determine the forces and moments acting on its components, derived from the processes along the cycles of work, with observation of the variations of the pressures and the temperatures in the cylinder and of the forces and moments of inertia in the components of the mechanisms and the structure. It is the purpose of the present paper to introduce the development of a series of procedures to obtain the preliminary dimensions of the main components of an engine (power mechanism, engine block and cylinder head dimensions), applying the machine design fundamentals and the thermodynamic and dynamic characterization of a generic engine of combustion, using the minimum information (power, torque, engine speed, and conditions of exploitation). To systematize the engine preliminary design, a spreadsheet based on Microsoft Excel was developed. To use this spreadsheet, the user must specify composition of the fuel, the type of ignition, and the wished characteristics of the engine. The outputs of the spreadsheet are the global stoichiometric balance of fuel-air chemical reactions, the heat release rate, the indicator diagram, the forces and moments acting on the main components of the crank-train mechanism, such a valuable information required to conduct the dimensioning of the engine components making use of the fundamentals of strength of materials.
Los motores de combustión interna son máquinas complejas en las cuales concurren diversos procesos y variables y que, ante todo, constituyen objeto de diseño. En el campo industrial, el diseño de un nuevo motor empieza por la concepción de una solución bien establecida con consideración de la experiencia de los diseñadores. Para realizar el diseño estructural de un motor, se requiere determinar las fuerzas y momentos en sus componentes derivados de los procesos a lo largo de los ciclos de trabajo, con observación de las variaciones de las presiones y las temperaturas en el cilindro y de las fuerzas y momentos de inercia en los componentes de los mecanismos y la estructura. Es el propósito de esta investigación el desarrollo de una serie de procedimientos para obtener las dimensiones iniciales de un motor, aplicando las teorías de diseño adecuadas para el dimensionamiento geométrico y la caracterización termodinámica y dinámica de un motor de combustión genérico, de manera que, a partir de la información mínima de partida (potencia, par, revoluciones y condiciones de explotación), se puedan obtener las dimensiones marco de las partes del conjunto móvil y del bloque y la culata, teniendo en cuenta una base de materiales de construcción. Para la sistematización del prediseño de los motores se ha desarrollado una hoja de cálculo en la que se pueden seleccionar o especificar las características deseadas del motor y composición del combustible, se realiza la termoquímica de la combustión, se determinan las emisiones, se calculan los procesos del ciclo termodinámico real con consideración de la ley de liberación de calor, se obtiene la evolución de las presiones y temperaturas a lo largo del ciclo del motor, se calculan las fuerzas debidas a las presiones de los gases y a la masa de las partes del conjunto móvil en cada uno de ellos, se calcula el par en el cigüeñal, se obtiene la característica externa de velocidad y se realizan los cálculos previos de las partes principales del motor.
