This research is a pragmatic analysis of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, a novel by Mark Twain, through Grice’s cooperative principle. The objectives of this research were to analyze the types ...and implied meanings and to examine the most frequent type of Grice’s cooperative principles performed by the main characters in the novel. This research employed a qualitative research approach by using the content analysis technique. The data were collated by analyzing the utterances that appear in the novel that indicated the disobedience cooperative principle. Grice’s cooperative principle found in this study consisted of two types: the first type was the observance maxim which included the maxim of quality, the maxim of quantity, the maxim of relation, and the maxim of manner. The second type was the non-observance maxim: flouting, violating, and opting out. The result showed that all types of Grice’s cooperative principles were found, and the maxim of violating was the most frequent type of Grice’s cooperative principle found in the novel.
Prispevek obravnava slovensko recepcijo romanov The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn – dveh klasičnih literarnih del, ki sta bili v slovenščino prevedeni večkrat. Analiza, ...ki je utemeljena na teoriji bralčevega odziva, je zajemala približno tisoč številk slovenskih serijskih publikacij (vključno z znanstvenim tiskom) in je pokazala, v kolikšni meri se slovenska recepcija razlikuje od tiste v izvirni kulturi. Ker je analiza razdeljena na obdobje med obema svetovnima vojnama, socialistično obdobje in obdobje po slovenski osamosvojitvi, osvetli, kako se je recepcija skozi čas spreminjala. Ob upoštevanju socio-političnih okoliščin v posamezni dobi je mogoče sklepati tudi, zakaj se je način, kako se je pisalo o obeh literarnih delih, včasih precej spremenil celo v nekaj letih. Med obema vojnama pri recepciji ni opaziti izrazitih ideoloških vplivov, med socialističnim obdobjem pa v recenzijah pogosto zasledimo obsodbe rasizma, kapitalističnega sistema, organizirane religije in drugih razsežnosti ameriške družbe. To je najbolj značilno za recenzije, ki so bile objavljene v prvih nekaj letih po 2. svetovni vojni; ko so se odnosi med ZDA in Jugoslavijo občutno izboljšali, se to odraža tudi v recepciji zadevnih romanov. Po slovenski osamosvojitvi sta romana zopet obravnavana predvsem kot mladinska književnost in večina zapisov o njiju nima izrazitega ideološkega naboja.
Scholarly studies in India have acknowledged the role of Mark Twain’s writings in critiquing social justice in a transnational framework. However, in the popular sphere Twain is seen primarily as a ...writer of tales of boyhood adventure, and his relevance to current social issues has not been fully realized. In the context of Twain’s stature in India, this essay analyzes the degree to which select juvenile translations of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in Hindi (one of India’s official languages) have been able to harness the potential of this text to dismantle deep-seated prejudices among younger readers, socializing them into a culture of tolerance. Critiquing the range of translational efforts in two versions of juvenile readers (in both a descriptive and prospective way), the essay assesses the degree to which these translations have succeeded or failed in this endeavor. It also explores the structural and linguistic options for future translations in Hindi which could overcome the shortcomings of the existing texts, thereby tapping into the novel’s value as an instructional text for readers of an impressionable age.
In translating idiomatic expressions, strategies are applied in order to make the result equivalent in the target language. This research proposes to explore the strategies used in translating ...idiomatic expressions and translation orientation. Translating idiomatic expressions might cause difficulties for translator and the result tend to be based on the source or target language. Therefore, we proposed to investigate the translation strategies of the novel “The Adventures of The Huckleberry Finnâ€. It aims at deciding the most frequent strategies used in the translating idiomatic expressions and translation orientation. This research is descriptive qualitative study using content analysis applying purposive sampling technique since not the whole novel is investigated. This finding shows that there are 53 idiomatic expressions translated using strategies proposed by Mona Baker (2018). This research also found that there are four strategies are used by the translator, such as (1) using an idiom of similar meaning and form; (2) translation by omission of entire idiom; (3) translation by paraphrase; and (4) translation by omission of a play on idiom. The most frequent strategy is translation by paraphrase with 51.8% occurence. Furthermore, domestication is dominating the orientation of the translation.
After the fog lifts in Chapter 15 of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck plays a trick on Jim, and Jim’s reproval, implying that Huck’s behavior is unworthy of a friend but typical of “trash,” opens ...Huck’s heretofore closed mind on the subject of race. No German term carries the connotations of English “trash” that allow extension from twigs, leaves, and miscellaneous worthless things to poor Southerners whose belief in white superiority over colored races gives them self-respect. A few recent, complete and fairly accurate translations are improvements over the early versions that appeared between 1890 and World War II; nevertheless, annotation is required to define the specific repugnant quality of “trash” with which Jim evokes the good in Huck.
