The target-oriented configuration of production planning and control (PPC) is a critical factor for companies with increasingly complex supply chains. The logistical performance of companies, which ...can be measured and expressed, e.g. with the logistical objectives delivery reliability and due-date compliance, suffers above all from the multiple influencing factors of the past years. Especially in the last year, it became apparent that disruptions in material supply due to pandemics or geopolitical crises are causing resource shortages that are posing the industry with ever-new challenges. Since, in many companies, PPC tasks are carried out based on past values, disruptive events have a particularly high impact here. In addition to the external disruptive influences, companies also have to manage the complexity factors of the supply chain, such as a high number of variants or a high degree of customization. The consequence of these circumstances is that companies need corresponding robustness in PPC allowing them to stay productive and competitive. The key factor to establishing high robustness is transparency. Furthermore, the faced uncertainties are often exacerbated by insufficient data situation for the companies' PPC.
Due to the outlined factors in companies, ongoing PPC tasks must be regularly checked for their quality and target conformity to ensure a high logistics performance. For this purpose, the PPC configuration must be carried out systematically and holistically. Therefore, essential PPC frameworks already exist, such as the Hanoverian Supply Chain Model (HaSupMo). Supporting the examination of the company's internal supply chain, the selected procedures for the fulfilment of the PPC tasks serve on the basis of logistical objectives. For this, comprehensive consideration of the PPC tasks must take into account the correct selection of procedures based on individual company needs and data.
At the same time, there is an internationally accepted ISO 9001 standard as a basis for the continuous improvement of all company processes. The described continuous testing and improvement of business processes with a focus on quality management is intended to promote the robustness of the certified companies. Taking a closer look at the contents of ISO 9001 and PPC configuration, structural similarities are noticeable.
This paper aims to examine ISO 9001 for characteristics and interfaces that enable a simplified PPC configuration. In addition, similarities should be identified and systematized, which should be taken into account for future interaction.

Over 1.5 million ISO 9001 certificates are in effect worldwide, 30 years after this quality management standard was launched. As the factory of the world, China is by far the leading country for ISO ...9001, in terms of both absolute and relative numbers and growth. Nevertheless, practitioners have cast doubts on the reliability of adopting ISO third-party quality certification in this country. In-depth interviews with 40 senior quality managers, consultants, and auditors with broad field experience and other complementary methods paints a disturbing picture. The widespread prevalence of fake ISO 9001 certificates is indicated, together with an eroded credibility of the process of third-party certification. We discuss the profound implications of the study—including whether or not the phenomenon is restricted to China—and introduce suggestions for managers and other stakeholders, as well as avenues for further research.
We have recognised significant problems in understanding and applying the standard ISO 9001:2015. In this general review article, we expound that this situation originates from the standardisation ...process and its managerial drawbacks. Our research provides insight into the problematic aspects in the standard. The research is based on analysing the standard text, making observations from the initial application period of the standard half a year after its publication, and searching for an explanation for the situation from the problems in the standardisation process. Our aim is to guide organisations in implementing the standard for business advantages in spite of its existing problems, to identify the responsibility of the implementing organisations, and to provoke and encourage them into creative business-specific solutions. We want that our study also provides more understanding about the general international standardisation procedures and in particular of the management system standards, of which ISO 9001 is the most well known. Our main focus is on the practitioners' viewpoints and the implementation of the standard in the organisations, and the article is based on our own observations and long-term participation on the ISO 9000 standardisation and implementation.
Quality and innovation are increasingly closer due to the pressures faced by organisations in the management of operational excellence. Currently, companies around the world are facing the ...consequences of the economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In the context of SMEs, investments in quality and innovation contribute to increased productivity and competitive capacity. One of the factors to increase the competitive capacity of SMEs is to encourage quality and compliance certification through the ISO 9001. SME managers in general have difficulty with the certification process because there are several barriers faced during this process. Considering the importance of SMEs to the economy, this paper proposes an approach to implement the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 standard in SMEs using the TRIZ methodology. This research is exploratory and qualitative. A case study was carried out in two Brazilian enterprises. As a result, the main critical factors of ISO 9001:2015 and the most appropriate inventive principles to assist in the implementation of these critical factors are presented. This study is innovative for the literature and provides important conclusions for SME managers in the implementation of ISO 9001:2015 requirements.
The overall aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of applying ISO:9001 on the school climate and satisfaction in schools. This was done by using a Likert-type evaluation instrument consisting ...of 21 items with an excellent reliability score for the general scale (Cronbach α = 0.955) and specifically for the school climate dimension (α = 0.969) and school satisfaction (α = 0.927). The instrument was applied to a sample of 2189 subjects (1881 teachers and 308 members of the school management team) at 85 schools in Spain where ISO:9001 has been implemented for at least 3 years. The results show that implementation of this QMS has generally had a medium level impact on school climate and on satisfaction among the teachers, students, and families at the schools in the sample. Moreover, descriptive and differential analyses have been carried out to identify any significant differences in the impact of implementing the QMS on improvements in the two dimensions as a function of the position, gender, seniority at the school, ownership, and size of the school, and length of time with the QMS implemented there. In addition, other analyses were carried out using single-variant general linear models that revealed an effect of interaction between the variables of position and age. Furthermore, cluster analyses were also performed to identify three teacher and management profiles attending to the levels of improvement brought about from implanting the QMS on the dimensions under study.
•The impact of applying ISO:9001 on the school climate and satisfaction is evaluated.•An instrument was applied to 2189 (teachers and management teams) at 85 schools.•Descriptive, differential and cluster analyses were carried out, among others.•The ISO:9001 had a medium level impact on the school climate and satisfaction.
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) emerged to deliver sustainable economic, environmental, and social value to organization's extended stakeholders and society in general. This study investigates ...the similarities, differences, and relationships between B Corp, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001 certifications and is supported by a mixed research methodology and a sample of 701 B Corp companies certified between January 2020 and March 2021. The results indicate that ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 certified B Corp companies have statistically higher scores for the Environment dimension but are inconclusive, or even contradictory, for the other BIA (B Impact Assessment) dimensions. Differences in size, activity sector and geographical location are discussed. It is shown that both B Corp, ISO 9001 and 14001 certified companies, guided by different missions and business models, contribute, at different levels, towards CSR and sustainable development goals.
With the rise of globalization, firms increasingly implement management standards developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to assure they can meet their customers’ ...expectations. ISO management standards reduce performance variability among suppliers and promote global trade. However, ISO standards also promote a certain degree of commonality or isomorphism between firms. If the very notion of ‘standards’ encourages a certain level of commonality between firms, then how can firms achieve a competitive advantage from implementing ISO standards? This research argues that the timing of when a firm implements an ISO standard relative to their rivals has strategic benefits. Drawing on the competitive dynamics literature we argue that firms can achieve an early mover advantage when implementing ISO 14001. However, an early mover advantage depends on the level of a firm's absorptive capacity (prior experience with ISO 9001) and the competitive intensity of their industry. This study uses longitudinal data from firms that implemented ISO 14001 at varying points in time to examine the benefits of an early mover advantage. More broadly, this research sheds light on when firms benefit the most from implementing new management standards. The results provide insights into implementing other emerging management standards.
•ISO 9001 is more effective in a high network closure environment.•ISO 9001 is more effective in a high network centrality environment.•ISO 9001 is more effective in a low industry homophily ...environment.•Endogenous panel stochastic frontier model is used for testing endogeneity.•Homoscedastic four-component stochastic frontier model is used for addressing endogeneity.
Operations management scholars have long suggested that processes play a critical role in a firm's competitive advantage. ISO 9001, in particular, provides a standard to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of processes. Similarly, network researchers argue that a firm's embedded position in the network plays a critical role in their competitiveness. Taking a network perspective, this research investigates if the productivity benefits of ISO 9001 depend, in part, on the network topology that connects the firm to their network partners. Using customer disclosure data from COMPUSTAT and ISO 9001, this study finds that network closure, industry homophily, and network centrality each moderate the effect of ISO 9001 on firm productivity. We find that ISO 9001 is more effective when firms are well embedded in the supply chain network and least effective when they are isolated. The overall results provide managers guidance on the strategic benefit of network position with regards to ISO 9001 effectiveness.
