This book introduces Immanuel Kant's masterwork, the Critique of Pure Reason, from a ‘relaxed’ problem-oriented perspective which treats Kant as an especially insightful practising philosopher, from ...whom we still have much to learn, intelligently and creatively responding to significant questions that transcend his work's historical setting. The book's main project is to command a clear view of how Kant understands various perennial problems, how he attempts to resolve them, and to what extent he succeeds. The constructive portions of the First Critique—the Aesthetic and Analytic—are explored in detail; the Paralogisms and Antinomies more briefly. At the same time the book is an introduction to the challenges of reading the text of Kant's work and, to that end, selectively adopts a more rigorous historical and exegetical stance.
Kant's lectures on anthropology capture him at the height of his intellectual power. They are immensely important for advancing our understanding of Kant's conception of anthropology, its ...development, and the notoriously difficult relationship between it and the critical philosophy. This 2003 collection of essays by some of the leading commentators on Kant offers a systematic account of the philosophical importance of this material that should nevertheless prove of interest to historians of ideas and political theorists. There are two broad approaches adopted: a number of the essays consider the systematic relations of the anthropology to critical philosophy, especially speculative knowledge and ethics. Other essays focus on the anthropology as a major source for the clarification of both the content and development of Kant's work. The volume also serves as an interpretative complement to the translation of the lectures in the Cambridge Edition of the Works of Immanuel Kant.
Mi objetivo es destacar la importancia que tiene el escepticismo pirrónico en el desarrollo y consolidación del idealismo crítico-trascendental. Para ello, sigo un punto de vista metafísico, distinto ...al de la bibliografía especializada, acerca de la influencia del escepticismo en Kant, introduzco la noción de resonancia argumental como guía, suponiendo la incognoscibilidad de las cosas en sí mismas y de la trascendentalidad. El resultado es la actualización de una problemática antigua sobre la influencia del escepticismo pirrónico en Kant, añadiendo un contexto metafísico, que va de un periodo dogmático-racionalista hasta su propuesta crítica. La conclusión es que tal resonancia argumental escéptica se haya irreprochablemente en sus obras precríticas, críticas y póstumas. Palabras clave: metafísica; método; idealismo; dogmatismo; antinomias My objective is to highlight the importance of Pyrrhonian skepticism in the development and consolidation of critical-transcendental idealism. For this I follow a metaphysical point of view, different from the specialized bibliography, about the influence of skepticism in Kant, I introduce the notion of argumental resonance as a guide, assuming the unknowability of things in themselves and of transcendentality. The result is the updating of an old problem about the influence of Pyrrhonian skepticism on Kant, with the addition of a metaphysical context, that goes from a dogmatic-rationalist period to his own proposal. My conclusion is that such skeptical argumental resonance has been irreproachable in his pre-critical, critical and posthumous works. Keywords: metaphysics; method; Idealism; dogmatism; antinomies
Este trabajo analiza la posición de la educación y el Estado en la filosofÃa práctica de Immanuel Kant, para quien la educación se establece como la tarea esencial de la humanidad, no en vano ...señaló que, "el hombre puede considerar cómo los descubrimientos más difÃciles, el arte del gobierno y el arte de la educación", que es con la cual inicia el proceso por el cual el ser humano se hace humano a saber; el de la civilización y la cultura, elementos intrÃnsecos en la esfera de la educación que es la base del desarrollo de las personas en particular, y de la humanidad en general, por lo cual las tesis sobre educación en el texto de la pedagogÃa deben ser revisadas, sugiriendo que el proyecto educativo cosmopolita es la mejor vÃa para propiciar una educación que tienda al bien universal.
This book continues and deepens avenues of research first initiated in the author’s highly acclaimed book, Kant’s Impure Ethics. Drawing on a wide variety of both published and unpublished works ...spanning all periods of Kant’s extensive writing career, the author focuses on Kant’s under-appreciated empirical work on human nature, with particular attention to the connections between this body of work and his much-discussed ethical theory. Kant repeatedly claimed that the question, “What is the human being” is philosophy’s most fundamental question, one that encompasses all others. The author analyzes and evaluates Kant’s own answer to his question, showing how it differs from other accounts of human nature. The book is divided into three parts. Part One explores the nature and role of virtue in Kant’s ethical theory, showing how the conception of human nature behind Kant’s virtue theory results in a virtue ethics that is decidedly different from more familiar Aristotelian virtue ethics programs. Part Two uncovers the dominant moral message in Kant’s anthropological investigations, drawing new connections between Kant’s work on human nature and his ethics. At the core of Kant's ethics lies the claim that if there is a supreme principle of morality then it cannot be a principle based on utilitarianism or Aristotelian perfectionism or the Ten ...Commandments. The only viable candidate for such a principle is the categorical imperative. This book is the most detailed investigation of this claim. It constructs a new, criterial reading of Kant's derivation of one version of the categorical imperative: the Formula of Universal Law. This reading shows this derivation to be far more compelling than contemporary philosophers tend to believe. It also reveals a novel approach to deriving another version of the categorical imperative, the Formula of Humanity, a principle widely considered to be the most attractive Kantian candidate for the supreme principle of morality. This book will be important not just for Kant scholars but for a broad swathe of students of philosophy.
