This article uses critical approaches to examine the ways in which dissenters have objected to the European Union's current "politics of rescue". The authors argue that the term "hospitality" has ...been a key term in liberal theorising about mobility since the Enlightenment, but that various neo-liberal "pull" theories, worries about securitisation and the militarisation of rescue efforts in the Mediterranean have converged in ways that have turned Europe into an "inhospitable" place for foreigners. The authors use three short case studies-of maritime captains' and sailors' rescue efforts, academic critiques of FRONTEX and vernacular reactions to the iconic Kurdi image-to put on display the contradictions that exist when illiberal decisions are made by EU communities that are supposed to be democratically governed by hospitality principles. They also argue that the focus on the social agency of "traffickers" deflects attention away from the structural and colonial facets of these migration "crises".
The sustainability and improving of milk production and the profitability of smallholder dairy units require integrated assessment of reproductive performance. The purpose of this study is to ...identify reproductive performance, and genetic and non-genetic factors affecting the performance of Kurdi crosses with Holstein and Brown Swiss, developed in recent years, under rural smallholder management. The cross breeding data were related to 210 herds, 885 cows and 970 calving intervals from two calving periods of 1998-2001 and 2004-2007. The traits of interest were age at first calving (AFC), days open (DO), gestation length (GL) and calving interval (CI). The means of AFC, DO, GL and CI were 28 months and 113, 277 and 390 days for crossbreds. In contrast to the sire breed, exotic gene percentage significantly influenced all traits (p < 0.01). DO, GL and CI were tested and no significant differences were found for the regions and calving periods. Season of calving significantly influenced next DO (p < 0.05) and GL (p < 0.01). Parity number had significant effect on next DO, GL and CI (p < 0.01). DO and CI have relatively desirable values in <75% crosses; on the contrary, ≥75% crossbreds have unacceptable means for these traits. For upgrading to ≥75%, the appropriate management practices (housing, nutrition and reproduction) must be considered to reduce postpartum anoestrus and service periods. Moreover, some research to determine more effective factors on DO must be conducted.
Traditional Indian cereal based fermented food products like Kurdi (Maharashtra) and Seera (Himachal Pradesh) are prepared from batter of fermented wheat grains. These wheat batters were prepared by ...soaking wheat grains (Triticum Astivum L., variety: PBN51) in water at different temperatures (30, 37.5 and 45°C) for four days (natural fermentation), crushed, centrifuged and characterized for rheological properties. The present study was aimed to test the effect of soaking temperature (during natural fermentation of wheat grains) on the rheological behavior of wheat batter. It was determined that viscosity and yield stress of the wheat batter decreased with increase in soaking temperature of natural fermentation. Yield stress decreased by 65% and 82% for wheat grains soaked at 37.5°C and 45°C, respectively as compared to those soaked at 30°C. This was attributed to the degradation of the carbohydrates by the natural flora of microorganisms. Increasing the soaking temperature during natural fermentation decreased the fluid consistency index and increased the flow behavior index of the batter, demonstrating a lower viscosity and increased fluidity. All the samples revealed shear thinning behavior. Gelatinization temperature of the wheat batter decreased with increase in soaking temperature as demonstrated by viscoelastic analysis (loss modulus, storage modulus, Tan δ) of the samples.
The genotypes for Beta-Lactoglobulin (BLG) and calpastatin (CAST) were determined by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and restriction enzyme digestion and genotyped for calpain (CAPN) by PCR-SSCP ...method in an Iranian breed sheep, Kurdi. Blood samples were collected from 100 pure bred Kurdi sheep from Kurdi breeding station located in Shirvan, Mashhad. The extraction of genomic DNA was based on Guanidin Thiocyanate-Silica gel method. After PCR reaction, amplicons were digested with restriction enzymes MspI and RsaI for beta-lactoglobulin and calpastatin genes, respectively. The beta-lactoglobulin locus had 3 genotypes with frequencies of 0.24, 0.54 and 0.22 for AA, AB and BB, respectively; calpastatin genotypes had 2 genotypes with frequencies of 0.76 and 0.24 for MM and MN genotypes, respectively. Calpain genotypes were analyzed with SSCP method, which had 2 genotypes with frequencies of 0.92 and 0.08 for AA and AB, respectively. Heterozygosity value for beta-lactoglobulin locus was 49% and for calpastatin and calpain loci was very low (24 and 8%, respectively). chi2 test confirmed the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for three loci in this population. These data provide evidence that Iranian's Kurdi sheep breed have a variability, which opens interesting prospects for future selection programs, especially marker-assistant selection between different genotypes of different locus and milk and cheese characteristics, gain and meat traits and also for preservation strategies.
O artigo objetiva discutir aspectos estéticos, éticos, ontológicos e semióticos do fotojornalismo, cujo objeto é
do imaginário coletivo. As análises permitem concluir que, ao publicar um retrato definitivo da história, os jornais
ressaltam a consciência da responsabilidade social., The article aims to discuss aesthetic, ethical, ontological and semiotic aspects of photojournalism, whose object
is the image of the boy Alan Kurdi, who died in Turkey. Methodologically, the survey of the articles published by
newspapers the day after the fact analyzes the problem of the responsibility of the press in portraying the horror.
Thus, evidence is sought for the hypotheses of image trivialization, departure from reality and fragmentation of
meaning for the reader. The results show the power of photojournalism in creating and legitimizing the collective
imagination. Analysis allows us to conclude that, when publishing a definitive portrait of history, newspapers
emphasize the awareness of social responsibility. Part of: Academic Journals -- University Fernando Pessoa
Policy of the modern Turkish state in the last decade, inner, and even more foreign, in the international arena, is inspired and defined with principles and parameters which can be called ...neoosmanism. That ideological orientation and political practice has its start point in the principles and practice of Otman Empire political activities, which leading Turkish politicians, summoned around Justice and development Party, lead by current Turkish prime minister Rejep Tayip Erdogan, today strive not only to rehabilitate, but also to implement the postulates of its rule and values that are imanent to Islam. In an international arena, where one of the directions and goals of their activities is also Balkans, meaning also Serbian people and their countries (Serbia, BiH and others), neootman Turkish policy acquires reputation and sense with the doctrine, which its author, Turkish minister of the foreign affairs Ahmet Davutoglou, called strategic depth. So, Serbs are facing a challenge of confronting neootmanism as a policy which will result in new geopolitical redesign of Balkan, Asia Minor, Middle Eastern, Middle Asian, and Caucasian congigurations of power and influence, thus it is important what historical reply to this challenge will they provide. The author pleds that a reply and attitude of Serb people and its countries towards neootmanism should base on principles and values of real-politics.
_'... the best single narrative history of the Kurds ... it certainly belongs on the shelf of anyone interested in the Middle East.'_ - *Washington Post Book World*The division of the Kurdish people ...among four modern nation states - Iraq, Turkey, Syria and Iran - and their struggle for national rights have been constant themes of recent Middle East history. The Kurdish lands have been contested territory for many centuries. In this detailed history of the Kurds from the 19th century to the present day, McDowall examines the interplay of old and new aspects of the struggle, the importance of local rivalries within Kurdish society, the enduring authority of certain forms of leadership and the failure of modern states to respond to the challenge of Kurdish nationalism. Drawing extensively on primary sources McDowall's book is useful for all who want a better understanding of the underlying dynamics of the Kurdish question.
