The device is a useful concept for a researcher who studies phenomena where we can observe the reproducibility of practices and techniques, the hybridity of heterogeneous elements and flows related ...to games of power and visibility. The device highlights roles, norms, and discourses but also promotes the study of dynamics and resistances. This concept includes technical, organizational and symbolic dimensions understood from sociological, philosophical, legal, economic, technological and even educational perspectives. Three current issues in information and communication sciences are also tackled, on the one hand, to illustrate the heuristic scope of questioning integrating the concept of device, and on the other hand, to demonstrate the unifying aspect of this concept. in information sciences and communication.

In British society, we celebrate diversity and champion equality across many areas, such as race and religion. However, where do British accents stand? Do notions such as ‘common’ or ‘posh’ still ...exist regarding certain accents, to the extent that people are deemed fit, or not, for certain professions, despite their qualifications? Accent and Teacher Identity in Britain explores these questions and Alex Baratta’s research shows that those with accents regional to the North and Midlands are most likely to be told by mentors and senior staff to essentially sound less regional, whereas those from the Home Counties are less likely to be given instructions to change their accent at all. Baratta investigates the notion of linguistic power, in terms of which accents appear to be favoured within the context of teacher training and from the perspective of teachers who feel they lack power in the construction of their linguistic teacher identity. He also questions modifying one’s accent to meet someone else’s standard for what is ‘linguistically appropriate’, in terms of how such modified accents impact on personal identity. Is accent modification regarded by the individual neutrally or is it seen as ‘selling out’?
In this groundbreaking, cross-disciplinary book, Rebecca Rogers explores the complexity of family literacy practices through an in-depth case study of one family, the attendant issues of power and ...identity, and contemporary social debates about the connections between literacy and society. The study focuses on June Treader and her daughter Vicky, urban African Americans labeled as "low income" and "low literate." Using participant-observation, ethnographic interviewing, photography, document collection, and discourse analysis, Rogers describes and explains the complexities of identity, power, and discursive practices that June and Vicky engage with in their daily life as they proficiently, critically, and strategically negotiate language and literacy in their home and community. She explores why, despite their proficiencies, neither June or Vicky sees themselves as literate, and how this and other contradictions prevent them from transforming their literate capital into social profit. This study contributes in multiple ways to extending both theoretically and empirically existing research on literacy, identity, and power:
* Critical discourse analysis. The analytic technique of critical discourse analysis is brought into the area of family literacy. The detailed explanation, interpretation, and demonstration of critical discourse analysis will be extremely helpful for novices learning to use this technique. This is a timely book, for there are few ethnographic studies exploring the usefulness and limits of critical discourse analysis.

Language diversity has become greatly endangered in the past centuries owing to processes of language shift from indigenous languages to other languages that are seen as socially and economically ...more advantageous, resulting in the death or doom of minority languages. In this paper, we define a new language competition model that can describe the historical decline of minority languages in competition with more advantageous languages. We then implement this non-spatial model as an interaction term in a reactiondiffusion system to model the evolution of the two competing languages. We use the results to estimate the speed at which the more advantageous language spreads geographically, resulting in the shrinkage of the area of dominance of the minority language. We compare the results from our model with the observed retreat in the area of influence of the Welsh language in the UK, obtaining a good agreement between the model and the observed data
Meaning in language is a phenomenon that has attracted the attention of language scholars, particularly those in the fields of language such as semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, and discourse ...analysis. Of central concern to these fields is the role context plays in meaning realisation. This paper examines the influence of the Nigerian socio-cultural context on the semantic realisations of three prominent words, 'dress', 'meet' and 'toast' in the Nigerian context of English language usage, within the purview of Adegbija's pragma-sociolinguistic theory. The study reveals the words, dress, meet, and toast, manifest some senses which are peculiar to the Nigerian L.sub.2 context of English, apart from the senses that the words depict in the English L.sub.1 context. For instance, dress in the Nigerian sociolinguistic environment manifests senses such as to adjust, to slap, and to position. Similarly, 'meet', and toast, alongside all other senses which are applicable in L.sub.1 and Nigerian contexts of English usage, manifest some senses which are peculiar to the Nigerian sociolinguistic environment. Thus, lack of adequate knowledge of the contexts that produce these Nigerian senses of the words in utterances by L.sub.1 and non Nigerian speakers of English could pose a problem of meaning decoding.Keywords: English in Nigeria, 'dress', 'meet' and 'toast', pragma-sociolinguistic theory
